The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith

At no point did I want to shout “You’re a wizard, Harry” nor was I concerned for the welfare of any of the Weasley offspring. Therefore I was able to completely forget that Robert Galbraith is in fact JK Rowling.

I enjoyed the plot, felt empathy with the characters and didn’t guess whodunit. Yes, there were numerous private detective clichés but that’s all part of the fun. Cormoran Strike is a likeable lead and his background leaves you wanting him to succeed. Many of the other suspect characters were stereotypical and unpleasant so I ended up hoping it was most of them at some point along the way.

Personally, I would have preferred more of a chance to work out the solution myself as I felt too many of the conversations and plot twists repeated a point but didn’t direct towards an obvious answer (unless you are Strike of course!). Looking forward to reading more non-Potter in the future.
