As you may have seen from my Amazon Book Haul video , I bought some books for my eldest to try.

I decided to have a read first to make sure that it was suitable in terms of difficulty and content. How To Train Your Dragon is now a film and tv show but we have seen neither so I was a complete newbie to this series. The plot begins with a group of Viking boys getting ready to be initiated into their tribe by stealing baby dragons. It doesn’t go well! All the boys are exiled but then huge dragons arrive and the boys need to work together to protect their families. The hero of the story is Hiccup, the son of the chief. The introduction implies that the story is told by Hiccup but the story is written in the third person. There are lots of fun illustrations dotted throughout the text which helps with imagining the characters and events in your mind’s eye.

I like the way that the author uses different fonts to represent the Dragonese as this was effective for showing the different language that only Hiccup and the dragons can understand. I didn’t like the over-use of capital letters to make lots of words into names: I felt this was unhelpful to new readers and writers who are taught not to do this at school.

I think this is a perfect book for Matthew to read to further his love of reading. I like the historical context this book contains, the characters were fun and the plot was immensely enjoyable. I look forward to reading more from this series assuming Matthew enjoys it as much as I did!
