This year I was determined that Matthew would learn to ride his bike without his stabilisers. Of course once I was putting effort into him, Anya announced that she wanted to do it too!
So then we had the first problem that Anya was more confident (fearless) and competent but being older I wanted Matthew to achieve it first so I deliberately held Anya back a few months (mum guilt kicking in right about here…)
Back in June Matthew got his cycling Beavers badge which was much more to do with bike maintenance than actually riding a bike.
We had to buy Matthew a new bike for the occasion as his old one was much to small. In fact it won’t be long before Anya also needs a replacement. Looking for cheap bikes doesn’t mean you have to get reduced quality. In reality a children’s bike will only last a few years and Matthew’s bike is covered in dents and scratches despite not much use!
This summer I was adamant that they would both learn to ride their bikes without stabilisers. I aimed to take them to the park at least once a week but weather and a rampaging Zachary put that plan on the back burner. Now the weather is colder I am definitely much less inclined to go out!
Oh well, there is always next year…
