Holiday 2023 day 6: Liverpool

After a day’s delay, we briefly returned over the border into England to visit Liverpool. The kids (ok, and us adults too!) were very excited to enter the city via a tunnel 🙂
Our first stop was the World Museum with exhibits from all over the world and periods of history. The museum is reflective and transparent about the artefacts’ origins and sensitive to issues of ownership and appropriaton.

The animal exhibitions were particularly popular with the kids, especially the dinosaurs for Matthew. We were thrilled to visit the aquarium which is sited on one floor.

After lunch at Pizza Express we explored the city, spotting sights including the Titanic memorial monument, Liver Building and Beatles statue.

Our final stop was the Museum of Liverpool which focuses on the history of Liverpudlian culture, architecture (loved the spiral staircase design of the museum itself) and people. My own favourite exhibit was a Mel C costume but I also liked the TV celebration of Liverpool’s influcence (including Bread that I remember watching as a child!).

I had wanted to visit Liverpool Cathedral but it turns out the city has two and they were in opposite directions! We were all a little worn out so decided to head back to our cottage instead. Our exit from the city was via the other tunnel and I wish I had been ready with my camera as it had statues of King George V and Queen Mary at the entrance.
