Not In A Million Years, by Sophie Ranald

Not In A Million Years book coverTRIGGER WARNING: drug use and addiction
Kate’s best friend Andy disappears abroad and she is anxious when he doesn’t keep in contact. He has a history of drug abuse so she fears for his safety. In her desperation she agrees to travel to his last known location with Daniel, a friend of Andy’s that she despises. Can they keep their arguments to a minimum and find their mutual friend…?
Not In A Million Years is described as a romantic comedy but I feel this doesn’t do justice to the intense and emotional plot and characters. Yes, the romance strand is clear throughout the book as Kate and Daniel deny their true feelings for each other. But for me, the strength of friendship and the perils of addiction were just as strong as themes.
That makes it sound a bit heavy, and at times it was. I was so wound up by Andy’s selfishness even while I tried to remember that addiction is an illness. Kate has good intentions and seems like a genuinely caring person. She suffers from insomnia as well as having a fear of heights and flying. These elements added to her authenticity as a character.
There were other moments of wonderful comedy, passionate sex scenes, and episodes that showed the gentleness and kindness of Kate and Daniel. I also want to mention the wonderful descriptions of the location. I have been to Turkey twice and felt like I was back there (plus I loved the inclusion of the cats!)
Not In A Million Years is an entertaining book and makes me yearn for the summer!

Not in a Million Years: A totally hilarious and feel-good enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy by Sophie Ranald
Cute bikini: tick Icy cocktails: tick Glossy magazines: tick Person on the next sun lounger: *worst nightmare*
Chronically single Kate is winning at life. She’s finally saved enough to live alone in her dream home, she has a great group of friends, and she has – at last – perfected the ultimate chocolate cake. So what if her love life is dead on arrival? Forget sex, she can make a sponge that would blow your socks off.
Aside from her romantic dry spell (is it still a ‘spell’ if it’s been years…?!), everything is going according to plan. But when she finds out one of her oldest friends Andy is travelling abroad and needs her help, she knows she’ll have to drop everything and fly out to him.
Only problem is, Daniel, the mutual friend she blames for Andy’s wild lifestyle, is coming with her. It’s the first holiday abroad she’s been able to afford in years, and she has to spend it with him?!
But when Daniel and Kate arrive, they soon find themselves having the unexpected romantic holiday of a lifetime. Swimming in crystal clear waters, sharing delicious meals and exploring beautiful local villages… It would all be perfect, if only they weren’t with each other.
And as the days pass, and more than one waiter mistakes her and Daniel for a honeymooning couple, Kate has to remind herself that there’s a reason she stayed single all these years. But as she sips her dry Martini and watches Daniel’s toned body dive into the pool, she wonders if it’s possible to have the perfect holiday with a man you hate… Or if maybe Daniel isn’t so bad after all?
A feel-good, feisty and fabulous romantic comedy, perfect for anyone who has ever found themselves in a love-hate relationship. Fans of Emily Henry and Sophie Kinsella will love this laugh-out-loud, snort-inducing read.

About the author:

Sophie Ranald is the youngest of five sisters. She was born in Zimbabwe and lived in South Africa until an acute case of itchy feet brought her to London in her mid-20s. As an editor for a customer publishing agency, Sophie developed her fiction-writing skills describing holidays to places she’d never visited. In 2011, she decided to disregard all the good advice given to aspiring novelists and attempt to write full-time. After one false start, It Would Be Wrong to Steal My Sister’s Boyfriend (Wouldn’t It?) seemed to write itself, and six more novels have followed. Sophie also writes for magazines and online about food, fashion, finance and fitness. She lives in south-east London with her amazing partner Hopi and their two adorable cats.

Her Final Breath, by Carolyn Arnold

Her Final Breath book cover

TRIGGER WARNING: domestic abuse
Detective Amanda Steele has an early morning call to a local park where a woman’s body has been found in a shallow grave. The case becomes even more sinister when a child’s body is discovered too…
Her Final Breath is the 7th book to feature Detective Amanda Steele and her team. There are personal plot lines that have threaded through the series but there are no spoilers about the crimes and killers.
The book begins with a woman and girl being held hostage. This instantly creates a tension which is then followed up by the discovery of a woman and child’s bodies. Amanda and her partner are keen to get on with the investigation but find themselves thwarted by procedure. Their prime suspect is the husband who has obviously been abusing his wife but he is also a cop.
The writing is tense and the pace is rapid. There are some twists and I had no idea who was responsible for the deaths. The chapters showing Leanne and Gracie’s perspectives were effective for making us desperate for them to get free.
Amanda’s personal life provides another tense thread as she remembers the kiss with Trent and she feels guilty about working late and the effect on her adopted daughter. Meanwhile Trent is precoccupied with the domestic abuse angle and his own aunt’s experience.
Her Final Breath is a fast paced and engaging detective thriller.

About the Book:
Faint sunlight dapples the two figures lying on the ground. The mother cradles her daughter close to her side, a stuffed toy elephant next to them. Leaves from the tall trees fall onto their faces, but neither moves to brush them off.
When a dog walker in a local Virginia park finds the bodies of a mother and daughter, Detective Amanda Steele is first on the scene. Her own daughter has a toy just like the girl’s elephant and seeing the child like this is her worst nightmare come true. Heartbroken, she vows to get justice.
They quickly get an ID-Jill Archer and six-year-old Charlotte were reported missing last week, but interviewing Jill’s husband, Roy, Amanda’s gut tells her he is hiding something. When the autopsy reveals a terrible pattern of bruises, she’s certain that a domestic argument escalated out of control, and tiny Charlotte got caught in the crossfire. But just as Amanda is about to arrest Roy, another grave is found, containing another mother and daughter.
Desperate for a lead, she goes to every place the women could have been targeted, and learns from a concerned ER nurse about Leanne Reilly and her young daughter, Gracie, who haven’t been heard from in a week. Amanda hopes that Leanne has simply left her deadbeat husband, but she’s gripped by the fear that they are the killer’s latest victims. Now every second counts for Amanda to find the family and stop a little girl’s nightmare before it ends in tragedy…
A totally compulsive and gripping crime thriller. The next unputdownable read for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.

Escape, by Iain Rob Wright

Cheryl has been working at her job for 3 months but still feels like an outsider. She is glad of the opportunity to bond with her colleagues during an escape room excursion. But the others are all hiding secrets and now they are forced to tell the truth in a terrifying series of sick games…
Escape is a grisly horror story which is very claustrophobic due to the setting of an underground escape room. There is lots of swearing which isn’t surprising due to the horrors the team are forced to endure!
Cheryl is a last minute addition to the team and it soon becomes clear that she isn’t meant to be there. The other team members need to take part is gruesome and deadly tasks in order to proceed.
There was a big twist and I did guess it but I was so caught up in the action that it didn’t spoil my enjoyment at all. The games are truly twisted and gory, and the descriptions don’t hold back.
Escape
Can you figure out the secrets of “the room” and escape before it’s too late?

Cheryl is about to learn that the people she works with are keeping a secret. One they are willing to kill for.

Cheryl is the new girl at work, which is why she feels like she doesn’t have a choice when she’s asked to go on a “company outing.” She and six of her colleagues are to be locked inside a room with only their wits to aid them. If they escape in time, there’ll be prize money. Fail, and the repercussions could be deadly.

One of Horror’s most respected authors, Iain Rob Wright is the writer of more than twenty books, many of them bestsellers. A previous Kindle All-Star and a mainstay in the horror charts, he is a prolific producer of unique and original stories. From his apocalyptic saga The Gates to his claustrophobic revenge thriller ASBO, Iain writes across a broad spectrum of sub genres, creating both beloved series and standalone titles.
With work available in several languages and in audio, Iain Rob Wright is one of the fastest rising stars in horror, but when not writing he is a dedicated family man. Father to Jack and Molly, and husband to Sally, he is often seen sharing his family memories with his fans on Facebook.

Dangerous Lady, by Amy Licence

Thomasin Marwood is 17 and excited to visit the court of King Henry VIII. But everything has changed since her parents were last there. The Queen has been sidelined as Anne Boleyn’s power increases. Thomasin needs to negotiate the political machinations of the court as well as romantic intrigues which threaten her honour…
Dangerous Lady is the first book in a series set in the Tudor era of the late 1520s. There is a mix of fictional characters as well as genuine figures from the age. I felt like I was immersed in the courtly life as well as the personal experiences of a teen coming of age.
Thomasin’s sister Cecilia is set to marry at court and the sisters quickly find favour with both Queen Catherine and Anne Boleyn. Personal and political plotlines merge as Thomasin tries to survive in the dangerous court of Henry VIII. Forbidden love as well as courtly behaviour is of national importance in contrast to Thomasin’s first personal experience of love and lust.
I have to confess that I adore the Tudor period so almost guzzled this book! I couldn’t put it down and finished wthin a few hours, yet didn’t want it to end. The author has done plenty of research and I felt that the characters behaved authentically. Thomasin is slightly impetuous and naive, unused to affairs of state and the heart. She is in danger due to her romantic relationships as well as her divided loyalties to the queen and the rising power of Anne Boleyn.
Dangerous Lady was a completely compelling book and a must for all Tudor fans!

Dangerous Lady book cover

Book blurb:
The first book in a stunning Tudor historical series! For fans of Philippa Gregory, Elizabeth Chadwick, Carol McGrath and Anne O’Brien.
Will Thomasin choose duty – or love…?
1527
At seventeen, Thomasin Marwood is plunged into court society when a husband is found for her elder sister, Cecilia.
But the mood at court is tense. It is split between the conservative Catholics, loyal to Queen Catherine of Aragon, and the fashionable Francophiles, enthralled by King Henry’s mistress, Anne Boleyn.
While her parents sympathise with the old queen and her faith, Thomasin can not help but be drawn to the glamour and vitality Anne represents.
And her head is soon turned by the tall, dark and handsome Rafe Danvers who seems equally entranced with her.
But as a ward of Anne’s father, Sir Thomas Boleyn, Rafe represents the “other” side, of which Thomasin’s parents are unlikely to approve. And they have already lined up their own candidate for Thomasin’s hand, Sir Giles Waterson, who comes from wealth and good standing.
Thomasin finds herself torn between duty and the desire Rafe has aroused in her. But when she is drawn into a dark plot concerning Queen Catherine, she realises the court is far more dangerous than it appears…
Which path, and with whom, will she choose?
DANGEROUS LADY is a page-turning historical drama set at the court of King Henry VIII and featuring Anne Boleyn. It is the first book in the Marwood Family Tudor Saga Series.

The Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman

Joyce joins the Thursday Murder Club in the senior village she belongs to. They are soon investigating a murder and making more headway than the police!
The Thursday Murder Club is a cosy murder mystery set in the south of England. It is the debut novel of the wonderful Richard Osman from Pointless.
The OAPs are a force to be reckoned with. There is an important message about underestimating the elderly
The book has a wonderful chatty tone. The minutiae of the details about the main and peripheral characters brings the book to life, making them more realistic and authentic.
I had lots of different theories about whodunnit. For me, the ending was a little complicated but this didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the novel overall.

Book blurb
In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders.
But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves.
Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before it’s too late?
