Her Final Confession by Lisa Regan

Josie Quinn is forced to investigate her colleague Gretchen when a man is shot and she disappears. What link is there to a spate of murders by a serial killer who seems to be killing again…?
It becomes clear that Gretchen’s past is key to solving all of the murders but when she hands herself in to the police she admits responsibility and refuses to explain further. Josie is determined to find out the truth and uncover the real killer so that she can free her friend and stop further murders.
This book makes several references to the previous 3 books in the series which I have not read. This didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the book but did make me want to catch up on what I’d missed!
There is a personal side to the book as Josie and her partner Noel attempt to begin a relationship but are often thwarted by the case. There is also the developing relationship between Josie and her recently discovered twin.
The interspersed flashbacks to murders in the 90s increased my interest in the present day case as I tried to work out how they were linked. The murders were not graphically described and each one stopped at the point that the murderer revealed his presence. This left a feeling of foreboding and up to the imagination of the reader.
I really enjoyed this book and Josie is a great lead character. There were twists right up to the end and I look forward to reading the rest of the series…

Description:
Watching her friend dragged away in handcuffs, Josie couldn’t believe for one second that Gretchen had killed that poor boy. Confession or not, someone else was involved. She would find out who…
When the body of a young student is found on the driveway of a local Denton home, a photograph pinned to his collar, Detective Josie Quinn is first on the scene. The house belongs to Gretchen Palmer, a dedicated member of Josie’s team, missing for the last twenty-four hours.
Working around the clock, Josie is stopped in her tracks when Gretchen hands herself in to the police. She knows that there’s no way Gretchen could ever be a killer, so why would she confess to a murder she didn’t commit?
Digging deep into Gretchen’s secretive life, Josie uncovers a link between the boy, the photograph and a devastating case in Gretchen’s past. But just when Josie thinks she has it all figured out, the bodies of a young couple surface on the other side of town. Can Josie get to the truth in time to save her friend from a life in prison or certain death?
Absolutely gripping, this unputdownable crime thriller from a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author will leave you gasping for breath. A perfect read for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.

The Liar’s Wife by Samantha Hayes

This is an astonishing book to read. Right from the start there is a sense of unease and agitation as Ella goes about her life avoiding social contact as much as possible.
Then she has an accident. When she wakes from her coma, she is greeted by her husband Jacob. Except she has never married…
The past relationship between Ella and Jacob is hinted at and we understand that she tried to kill him although her motives remain unclear. He now wants to delete the past and create a future together.
The story of the present day is interweaved with events from their uni days which leaves the reader guessing about the years in between.
There is a lot of domestic violence in this book and the controlling abuse that Jacob uses is so well described that the distress of Ella is palpable. She is a prisoner due to her physical injuries and her mental fear. Jacob gets rid of her flat, forces her to resign from her job and presents her with a baby that he has abducted.
Ella has one glimmer of hope: a work colleague who can’t believe that Ella would leave her job so readily but can Liam find her before it i too late…?
This book was uncomfortably good and the ending had twists I was not expecting. All through the book, I felt troubled by Ella due to her suffering at the hands of Jacob and the guilt she carried around before his return. But there was something else about her and we discover throughout the book the sadness that existed in her life even before her university days.

Last Light by Helen Phifer

Gruesome at times but a brilliant read!
Lucy Harwin is investigating the brutal murder of a woman in a disused church. Sadly there are other victims and Lucy battles personal involvement as it becomes obvious that her daughter’s friends and church group are the ones being targeted. But is one of them also the killer…?
The plot is excellent and the police characters are really likeable so you want them to succeed with finding the killer. The action was fast paced and I wanted to slow down my reading but it was compulsive so I ended up reading faster and faster instead!
I did guess the killler’s identitiy but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book at all. The violence is quite graphic and the descriptions of the murder scenes are grisly, however this didn’t bothered me and served to make the book seem more realistic.
The book was really clever for giving us an insight into the killer’s past which served to make me sympathetic towards him for the terrible life he had endured. This emotional edge made the book so much more than a straightforward police procedure book.
There are 2 other books in the series and I will be searching them out quick!

Description:
Lucy watches the pathologist leave, then turns to the nameless victim on the table. ‘I promise I will catch whoever did this to you,’ she whispers.
In charge of a new team, Detective Lucy Harwin is called out to attend the discovery of a woman’s body in an abandoned, crumbling church, and is quickly plunged into a case that will test her leadership skills to the limit.
With no leads except the crudely-fashioned crucifix the victim was displayed on, Lucy is at a complete loss. That is, until another body turns up: an elderly woman who devoted her life to the church.
Faced with a killer stalking the streets of her small coastal town, while also throwing herself into work to forget the love of her life, Lucy’s first case is turning into a nightmare.
Linking the killer to the church where her own teenage daughter volunteers, it seems the threat is quickly drawing closer to Lucy and those she loves. Can she catch this monster and prevent a tragedy that will tear her world apart?
An addictive and unputdownable crime thriller that will hook fans of Patricia Gibney, LJ Ross and Angela Marsons from the very first page.

Our Sweet Destiny by Addison Cole: review and giveaway

This is the second book in Addison Cole’s Braden family series (read my review of number one here)
The family feud that was mentioned in the first book becomes the central theme of this book, reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet (actually just noticed that the lead lovers have the same initials!)
Rex Braden had been harbouring a secret love for Jade Johnson and so has she in return. But the animosity between their fathers has prevented them even speaking to each other for most of their lives.
Jade returned to Weston in the last book and is now here to stay so they need to address their feelings. They accept their emotional connection but keep it a secret from their families: will their love ever be accepted?
I didn’t really like Rex in the last book as he was quite unkind to his brother but he was much more likeable in this book as we got to see his softer side.
I got very involved with the characters and was frustrated by the single mindedness of the fathers for being proud and ruining their friendship. I also felt they were wrong to impose their opinions on their children.
It was an interesting dilemma to consider: the love you have always wanted versus the love of your family. Rex and Jade have put their families first for their whole lives but they can’t deny their own happiness any longer.
With lots more siblings, I’m looking forward to the rest of the Braden family stories…

NEW RELEASE…

In OUR SWEET DESTINY…

She’s spent forever trying to deny her attraction to headstrong, too-handsome-for-his-own-good cowboy Rex Braden. The last thing she needs is that particular man complicating her life.

Fiercely loyal Rex Braden has never put anyone or anything before his family. Despite the irate family history, sparks fly between Rex and Jade, unleashing fifteen years of stifled, forbidden love—and causing the rebel in each of them to rear its powerful head.

Secrets Between Us by Valerie Keogh

This is a spectacular psychological thriller!
Valerie Keogh introduces us to Ellie and Will whose lives are devastated when they find out that Ellie cannot have children. At the same time, she receives notification that the sheltered housing her twin sister lives in is closing down.
Tia goes to live with the couple but Ellie struggles from the start. She always played second fiddle to her twin whilst growing up and resented the love and attention Tia got as a result of her learning disability.
Ellie suspects that Tia is more able than she appears and is eager for her to find new accommodation. Is she right and does Tia have other ideas about the future?
There are some MAJOR plot twists that I want to share but don’t want to spoil the surprise for you!
Ellie’s emotions are laid bare in the book and it is quite heartbreaking to see her distress at being unable to become a mother whilst coping with the responsibility of caring for her sister.
This is a fascinating book to read although I was expecting the final twist at the end. Twins are captivating to us as a society. I can appreciate a little of the frustration of identity confusion: at my wedding the photographer thought my sister was me!
