My very own website!!! Yikes!

Enjoying the vegan and gluten free options at Pizza Express

Over the last couple of months I have indulged my passion for pizza with several trips to Pizza Express in Camberley. Their online menu is very easy to navigate and has allergen filters and information which is simple to use. In the restaurant there is a sepatate vegan menu and an allergen document to ensure appropriate choices.

Dough balls are one of Pizza Express’s famous items and there is a vegan and gluten free option!

American Hot. Yowsers it was spiiiiiicy! But absolutely delicious.

Ad astra has Cajun and garlic flavours

Forza means strong and there were some big flavours on this pizza with Cajun spice and chillis.

Sloppy Joe has one of my favourite ingredients: red onion!

Funghi di Bosco is a mushroom pizza. Sadly, this was my least favourite pizza. I couldn’t really taste the rosemary or the garlic although I could taste the latter for hours afterwards!
There are two vegan and gluten free dessert options but I didn’t really fancy either. One is lime and basil sorbet and the other is stem ginger cake. Sadly I find sorbet a little dull and really dislike ginger. I am not a pudding fan usually as I prefer savourty options.

Learwife, by J.R. Thorp (audiobook read by Juliet Stevenson)

A queen imprisoned in an abbey for 15 years. Her husband and daughters die and she prepares to escape…
Learwife is the fictional account of King Lear’s wife, derived from the Shakespeare play. The plot begins where the play of King Lear ends and centres around his estranged and exiled queen.
I studied King Lear for A Level and was happy to be re-immersed in the plot alongside the characters. Lear and his daughters are dead. But one member of the family remains alive in secret. Lear’s wife and queen has been kept almost prisoner in an abbey but now hopes for her freedom to allow her to grieve for her husband and children.
Learwife is full of raw emotion, love and passion, grief and pain. I was swept up in the main character’s life experiences in the past and present. Politics and faith also play a key role in the drama of the book as Learwife struggles for power within the convent as the country at large adjusts to the upheaval of Lear’s downfall.
The author appeals to the senses and emotions of the reader through poetic prose. The writing style is flowery and almost overly descriptive. Shakespeare would definitely approve as some of his lines are included. Juliet Stevenson’s narration is perfectly matched to the text and characters.
Learwife is a captivating historical novel for Shakespeare and literature fans.

Book blurb:
Taking inspiration from two lines in Shakespeare’s King Lear, J.R. Thorp spins an unforgettable story about love, motherhood, grief and power.
Set in medieval Britain, Learwife gives voice to one of the most famous female characters ever written out of literary history. Lear’s queen has been exiled in an abbey for 15 years, since the birth of her youngest daughter, for an unknown offence. After hearing the devastating news of the deaths of her husband and daughters, the queen enters into a spiral of grief. To occupy her troubled mind, she encourages the women of the abbey into a competition for her approval, a contest that quickly devolves into savagery. Her narrative is interwoven with her memories, as a queen and mother who conceived a family plagued by madness, deceit and tragedy.
Learwife is a thrilling, exquisite and audacious literary debut about a woman thwarted, a woman forgotten, a woman fighting back.

Rags of Time, by Michael Ward

London 1639, a wealthy man is killed in his field, seemingly attacked by falcons. An associate of his then dies is a bizarre incident at a dinner party. Both deaths imply the involvement of Thomas Tallant yet he knows he is innocent…
Rags of Time is an historical novel set during the lead up to the English Civil War. The historical backdrop of this story is the increasing divide and political tension between King Charles I and Parliament. I know a little about this aspect of history but enjoyed seeing how politics affected the working classes on the streets.
This is a slow burn of a book in terms of plot development. The first murder happens in the opening chapter but then the book shifts to Tom Tallant’s life and work. It took a while for me to like Tom. His dismissive attitude at the start of the book towards the woman he may have impregnated who subsequently died of plague didn’t endear him to me at all. Gradually he does show a softer side which makes him easier to like.
I had no idea how the book would unravel and the murders would be solved. Tom is obviously innocent but he has enemies who are determined to frame him. He has a developing relationship with Elizabeth Seymour and I’m interested to see how this progresses. Despite the historical angle, the characters had a distinctly modern feel. The ending is very dramatic and full of action as the plot strands merge and conclude.
Rags of Time is an enjoyable start to a new series of historical crime books.

London.
1639.
Thomas Tallant, a young and ambitious Spice Merchant, returns from India to find his city in turmoil.
A bitter struggle is brewing between King Charles I and Parliament, as England slides into civil war. The capital is simmering with dissent. The conflict is ready to boil over.
But Thomas soon has other troubles to contend with. A wealthy merchant, Sir Joseph Venell, is savagely killed; then his partner Sir Hugh Swofford plunges to his death, in the Tallant household.
Suspicion falls on Thomas, who is sucked into a mire of treachery and rumour within the City of London. As the merchant struggles to clear his name, he becomes captivated by the enigmatic Elizabeth Seymour, whose passion for astronomy and mathematics is matched only by her addiction to the gaming tables.
Pursued by the authorities, Thomas races to unmask the real killer who claims a third victim to implicate him further, toying with his future in a deadly cat and mouse game.
In a desperate race against time, Elizabeth applies her powers of logic and deduction to unearth the clues that will point to the killer, but her way is barred by a secret message from the grave.
Can she crack its code before Thomas, now a wounded and exhausted fugitive, succumbs to the chase?
And, if she succeeds, has Thomas the strength to face his tormentor and win his life and reputation back?
Rags of Time is the first book in an engaging and entertaining new historical crime series, set during the upheaval of the 17th Century.

Stone Cold Dead, by Stephen Puleston

Stone Cold Dead book cover
A freelance journalist is murdered on a bowling green. He was investigating a supposed cult that promises to revolutionise your life and fulfil your potential. DI Ian Drake and his team start investigating but there is soon another body…
Stone Cold Dead is the 11th book in the DI Drake series. I have previously read and reviewed the 10th book Time To Die.
Jack Holt is found dead on a bowling green, held in place by croquet hoops. DI Drake is instantly drawn to Holt’s journalistic background and his focus on the Peel Foundation as a potential motive. But it becomes clear that there may be a personal suspect and motive until a second body is found.
The book is written in the third person throughout to show the police investigation. I really liked Drake’s character. He also has a stable family life that is very important to him and further endeared him to me. Other police characters also have a personal link to the case which threatens their impartiality and focus.
The plot develops at a reasonable pace and there are two main lines of enquiry for the police team to investigate. There are little details of normality that make the characters seem authentic and natural, such as the on-off use of satnav. I also have to mention the realistic use of Welsh locations as I visited many of them on holiday this year!
Stone Cold Dead is a solid and enjoyable police procedural.

Stone Cold Dead (Inspector Drake Book 11)

A journalist’s brutal murder stuns a small community…But unravelling his life unearths surprises not even DI Drake could expect.
When a journalist is found pinned to a bowling green with croquet hoops, his head caved in, DI Drake and his team must unravel the man’s life.
The reporter was working on exposing the dark and sinister side of a cult led by a charismatic individual who Drake identifies as being their prime suspect. But the dead man’s private life isn’t what it appears to be and soon the detectives identify other persons of interest.
But who would want to murder the respected journalist? There are plenty of persons of interest with motive to kill the man and while Drake focuses on the cult and it’s leader another death forces a new approach.
When facing the startling truth Drake and his team are forced to protect the innocent no matter what the cost and the face a race against time to prevent more deaths.
Stone Cold Dead is the eleventh novel in the Inspector Drake crime series. Perfect for fans of JM Dalgiesh, JD Kirk, Damien Boyd, LJ Ross, Rachel McLean and Simon McCleave.

Her Last Words, by Carolyn Arnold

Her Last Words book cover
An author is killed in the same manner as a character in her latest book. Her final phone call was to Detective Amanda Steele but was never answered so now Amanda is determined to find the killer but he strikes again…
Her Last Words is the 9th book in the Detective Amanda Steele series.
Amanda is on holiday but returns to work early when she discovers an acquaintance has been murdered. She was the last person that the victim phoned but she missed the call and has no idea what it would have concerned. The crime scene resembles that from the victim’s latest book although there are some differences and Amanda wants to know why.
The book is written in the third person throughout to show the investigation. Earlier books in the series had some chapters from the killer’s perspective but this one didn’t. This meant I had no insight into the motive or character of the killer. The focus is entirely on the case as it unfolds from the detectives’ perspectives. The chapters are short which means the pace is speedy and twists develop quickly.
Amanda feels huge guilt about being away from her family due to her work commitments. There is also a romantic tension between Amanda and Trent which returned in this book. Amanda’s link with the victim makes her even more determined to find the truth. I had no idea of the identity and motive of the killer so was kept guessing until the end.
Her Last Words is an interesting case for a really likeable pair of detectives.

About the Book:
The glow from the fireplace throws an eerie light over the woman’s carefully arranged body, her lifeless eyes reflecting the flames that slowly burn the evidence of who did this to her…
When Detective Amanda Steele is called to the brutal murder scene of successful local author Felicity Kelley, her blood runs cold. Because Amanda not only knew the victim, but was the last person Felicity called moments before she was murdered. Plagued with guilt that she never answered, Amanda is left wondering whether she could have prevented the murder, and vows to catch the killer, no matter what.
Desperately searching the crime scene for clues, Amanda is shocked when she discovers a Queen of Hearts playing card, suggesting the murder could be an imitation of a scene from Felicity’s bestselling crime novel. Terrified that she is dealing with a crazed fan who could strike again, Amanda’s worst fears are confirmed when another innocent woman is viciously murdered, with the same chilling calling card left behind.
But when Amanda connects the murders with a cold case from fifteen years ago, a case that Felicity appears to have been researching for her next novel, she is forced to question if the killer’s motive is even more sinister than she first suspected. But the closer Amanda gets to unearthing this motive, the closer she gets to becoming the next victim…
A completely pulse-pounding and unputdownable crime thriller, perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.
