Cosy Club Basingstoke: VIP opening event

Yay, a blogging event meeting up with two of my favourite local bloggers Jenny from Ramblings of a Jaffa Cat and Dawn from Dear Mummy Blog.

We were invited to attend the opening of the brand new Cosy Club in Basingstoke! The atmosphere was amazing and I particularly liked the dress code for the staff as well as the vintage decor. There was a party vibe going on and the staff and guests were obviously excited to launch this new restaurant.

I was thrilled to note on the drinks menu that the straws are compostible so good for the environment, yay!
As I was driving, I opted for a mocktail rather than a cocktail (which I craved, good excuse to go back!) and so I experienced my first mojito…

So, food… I hestitantly requested vegan and gluten free and… no problem! I enjoyed roasted veggies, garlic mushrooms on toast and chips! Meanwhile the others tucked into their meaty wheaty tapas treats.

We had a lovely evening, catching up on life and enjoying good food and drink. I want to pop back one night to try the cocktails and their main menu options (although the tapas was tasty, I like BIG meals 🙂 ), but also during the day with my family to see what the atmosphere is like at lunchtime. There is an outside seating area which I imagine would be a fab way to spend a summer evening, sipping cocktails and sharing tapas with friends.

*We were invited to attend this event along with other bloggers and members of the local community. There was no requirement to write about our experience but I wanted to share!

I’ll Be Home For Christmas, by Karen Clarke

I’ll Be Home For Christmas is a lovely tale of the importance of finding yourself and loving yourself before trying to find someone else to love you.
Nina Bailey is visiting France to stay with her cousin Charlie and aunt Dolly who we met in Karen Clarke’s last book (Summer at the Little French Cafe).
She is at a crossroads in her life: no job but the idea of starting a travel blog, no fiance after discovering he was unfaithful and cancelling their wedding, and griefstricken after the death of her grandmother. All of these are bitterly linked and she needs time for her heart to heal.
Her aunt has other ideas and immediately begins to matchmake with Charlie’s friend Ryan who is also visiting after the breakdown of his previous relationship but his ex won’t leave him alone.
The developing relationship and antagonism between Nina and Ryan is gentle and fun, with plenty of feel good moments and a sprinkling of humour. The main characters have been given an emotional depth and misunderstandings ramp up the drama.
Plus there is a Christmas theme! There is a lovely festive feel to the whole book and a reminder that Christmas is only as special as the people you spend it with.

Nina Bailey loves Christmas. Except this year she doesn’t. Because it turns out that her husband-to-be has been cheating on her – and her beautiful wedding ceremony in the snow is cancelled.
She’s not really in the mood to be jolly, sing carols, or go anywhere near gingerbread men – in fact, what Nina wants is to avoid the whole thing. So she’s come to stay at her Aunt Dolly’s cosy café to nurse her broken heart.
Nina is determined to get through Christmas with no tinsel, no fuss – and definitely no flirting. So when she arrives and meets infuriatingly handsome Ryan Sadler, with his gorgeous forest-green eyes, she is not best pleased. And when Nina overhears him making fun of her, she is furious. (There might have been an incident with a koala onesie and a spilled bottle of milk, but that really wasn’t her fault!) So despite the spark between them, and the fact that he can whip up a fabulous dinner faster than she can say Michelin star, romance and Christmas are off the menu this year.
Unfortunately, Aunt Dolly hasn’t quite got the message, going to great lengths toprovide a proper British Christmas for her beloved niece: a true home away from home. With sparkling lights adorning every wall and a tree to equal the Rockefeller Center’s and, yes, mistletoe above every doorway, can Nina resist the magic of Christmas – and stick to her no-romance rule?
This heart-warming romantic comedy will have you reaching for eggnog, roasted chestnuts and gingerbread cookies! The perfect festive book to read curled up in front of the fire, for fans of Sue Moorcroft, Holly Martin and Debbie Johnson.

The Last Wife, by Nicola Marsh

I was hooked and enthralled from the first page! The Last Wife is a story about love, lies, money and power.
Ria’s husband walked out on her and her daughter 5 years ago but she has remained close to her mother in law and frequently attends family gatherings.
The Parker family are all hiding secrets and Ria is emailed with details which could ruin their carefully maintained social status. She is eager to find the source of the emails but it involves finding her estranged tech genius husband…
The narrative is divided amongst the female characters so that we gain insight into their perspective of the events as they unfold.
Ria is by far the most pleasant character and it is fascinating to compare how the women appear to others compared to how they represent themselves. In particular, Ashlin appears to be a thoroughly selfish, nasty woman but from her viewpoint we discover her insecurities and vulnerability.
Threaded through the brilliant character exploration is the element of mystery. What secrets are they hiding from the rest of the family and what are the implications once revealed?
Family tensions are central to the plot, and the way that author Nicola Marsh writes her female characters allow us to understand and empathise with them, even when they are not nice people.
I’m not sure I was completely convinced by the ending but I enjoyed The Last Wife so much that it didn’t matter, and my overall verdict is ‘wow’!

Trusting his family was her first mistake.
All Ria ever wanted was a family. Growing up alone in foster care, she imagined just how it would be. So when she fell in love with Grayson and had their daughter Shelley, she was determined to make his family love her too. She knew she’d never fit in with her glamorous sisters-in-law, or at the exclusive picture-perfect Chicago parties her mother-in-law threw, but with Grayson’s arm around her waist she tried her best to be a Parker.
Everything changed when Grayson disappeared.
Until one morning, Grayson leaves the house for work and never comes home. Left to raise Shelley alone, Ria is forced to turn to her husband’s family, to let her intimidating mother-in-law into her life, allow her to babysit Shelley, and accept her financial support. She tries to ignore the feeling that her sisters-in-law never thought she was good enough. They say they have no idea what happened to Grayson, and she tries very hard to believe them.
But Ria is about to learn that every Parker wife has secrets.
And protecting her daughter might come at a terrible price…
Utterly compelling, The Last Wife is an emotionally-charged novel about what one woman will do to survive. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, Kerry Fisher and The Other Woman.

The Garden on Sparrow Street, by Tilly Tennant

Ooh, my heartstrings have been pulled with this book! Nina and Robyn both lost their husbands and volunteer at the shop which supports the charity which helped them through their darkest hours. When the shop closes, they both feel a bit lost so join the crusade in their neighbourhood to transform a rundown garden area for the local community and raise money for charity instead.
On the personal front, both women face the prospect of new love, something which Robyn relishes but Nina is terrified of giving her heart away again, feeling like she is cheating on her late husband.
The community project gains publicity and funds so a professional gardener assists them. Love begins to bloom between Nina and Colm…
Sadly the garden is wrecked by vandals and the developing romance is rocked by past love. Can there be a happy ending?
The Garden on Sparrow Street is a beautifully emotional book. The loss and grief that Nina has experienced is achingly believable, and her doubts and fears are also realistic. Her friendship with Robyn adds humour and conflict to the novel. The hope and love in the book are inspiring and moving and as readers we are able to root for the success of the garden and Nina’s lovelife.
There is great sadness in the book but this is softened by a comedy element provided by the peripheral characters. Tilly Tennant has constructed a community that her readers will become a part of as they involve themselves in the narrative.

Author Bio:
Tilly Tennant was born in Dorset, the oldest of four children, but now lives in Staffordshire with a family of her own. After years of dismal and disastrous jobs, including paper plate stacking, shop girl, newspaper promotions and waitressing (she never could carry a bowl of soup without spilling a bit), she decided to indulge her passion for the written word by embarking on a degree in English and creative writing. She wrote a novel in 2007 during her first summer break at university and has not stopped writing since. She also works as a freelance fiction editor, and considers herself very lucky that this enables her to read many wonderful books before the rest of the world gets them.
Hopelessly Devoted to Holden Finn was her debut novel; published in 2014 it was an Amazon bestseller in both the UK and Australia. In 2016 she signed to the hugely successful Bookouture and is currently working on her next Tilly Tennant novel. She also writes as Sharon Sant, where she explores the darker side of life, and Poppy Galbraith, where things get a little crazier.

And Then There Was Us, by Addison Cole

Probably the final installment of the Braden series from Addison Cole as all the siblings are now set up with the loves of their lives! (Sad but happy for me as a fan!)
The final brother to fall in love is racing driver Hugh who is set up on a disasterous blind date but instead meets Bree. Love and lust sparks between the pair but can a celebrity ever make it work with a single mum who works two jobs to make ends meet…?
As a single mum myself when I met my handsome prince (hi Chris!), I totally understood Bree’s perspective, her doubts and her fears. It is so easy to be so narrowly focussed on your children that you forget about yourself. Happiness of a parent is so essential for a happy childhood but Bree has put her life on hold to care for her daughter and take care of necessities.
Hugh’s character as a player has been a thread through the other Braden books but now he has realised there is more to life as he sees his siblings settling down. He is looking for love but only seems to attract women interested in his fame. Bree is different and likes him as a man, whereas he sees her as a woman as well as a mum.
And Then There Was Us is a warm and uplifting book about love conquering obstacles. There is also the chance to catch up with the other Bradens who we have got to know so well over the five previous books.
The ending was a little cheesy but it did bring tears to my eyes.
Check out my reviews of the rest of this series: A Love So Sweet, Our Sweet Destiny, Unravelling the Truth About Love, The Art of Loving Lacy and Promise of a New Beginning.
