Her Perfect Life, by Emily Shiner

Her Perfect Life book cover

Millie is released from prison after being framed for a murder by her own twin sister Eve. She is ready to forgive Eve and hopes to rebuild their relationship. But Eve rejects her so Millie becomes intent on taking her sister’s perfect life away…
Her Perfect Life is a psychological thriller that was absolutely gripping but pushed the boundaries of credulity.
Millie has our sympathy at the start as she has been convicted of a crime she didn’t commit. She knows it was really her twin that was responsible and now is out for revenge. At this point my support evaporated a bit due to Millie’s actions. She quickly learns that Eve doesn’t have the perfect life that Millie imagines. She is being blackmailed by Gareth and Mya, forced to run errands for them, and now Millie is in their clutches instead.
Millie feels imprisoned again and begins to plan ways to escape. Multiple first person perspectives are used to show the plot developments. The majority of the book is from Millie’s viewpoint and she seems like a good person that has been twisted by circumstances. Gareth and Mya are selfish and this makes us hope even more that Millie will escape them.
There is the added problem of Eve’s cop boyfriend and Millie struggles to maintain the pretence that she is her twin. The tension builds and I was fully on her side again even though she isn’t an innocent victim. The ending was wickedly clever and left me satisfied with the outcomes for the characters.
Her Perfect Life is thoroughly entertaining so suspend your disbelief and enjoy!
I have previously reviewed The Secret Wife and The Caretaker by Emily Shiner.

Eve’s life seems perfect. Until you have to live it.
Millie has just served a long sentence for a murder she didn’t commit. It’s her identical twin sister Eve who was the killer – and the person who framed Millie.
Millie is willing to forgive Eve and hopes they can still be loving sisters. But when she is released, instead of welcoming her, Eve coldly rejects her. Now Millie only wants one thing – revenge.
Eve seems to have the perfect life – plenty of money, a beautiful house. So Millie’s plan is simple – she’ll kill Eve and step into her shoes.
But Millie soon discovers her sister’s life is anything but perfect. She had become involved with a dangerous man – controlling, possessive, ruthless.
And now he owns Millie. Caught in a deadly web of deceit, she must continue playing the part of Eve. Her life depends on it.
Can she find the strength to escape this new prison? Or will she be trapped forever in… her perfect life?

Her Perfect Life – the stunning psychological thriller from the best-selling author of The Secret Wife.

The Lost Sister of Fifth Avenue, by Ella Carey

The Lost Sister of Fifth Avenue book cover
1930s: The shadow of Nazism looms over the world. Martha is anxious for the safety of her sister Charlotte who is living in Paris and working for a Jewish gallery. Martha returns to America with Jewish friends but Charlotte stays behind to protect their art and possessions.
The Lost Sister of Fifth Avenue is the fourth book in Ella Carey’s Daughters of New York series. Each can be read as a stand alone book but they have character links. This is an historical novel set in the 1930s and 40s but also with a separate timeline set just after WW1.
The majority of the book is written from Charlotte and Martha’s perspectives as they get on with their lives on either side of the Atlantic. However, there are a few chapters written from their mother Chloe’s viewpoint 20 years earlier. The events of the past have huge implications for the sisters.
I felt frustrated with Charlotte for not taking the danger seriously at first. She acts honourably to try to protect her friends’ things and save art for the nation but I think she should have valued herself above possessions. Then she joins the resistance, putting herself in greater danger but acting positively to save people and defy the Nazis. There are some big plot twists and the ending was a surprise.
The Lost Sister of Fifth Avenue is an enjoyable novel about family and bravery.
The first 3 books in the series are A New York Secret, The Lost Girl of Berlin, and The Girl From Paris.

Book Description:
New York, 1938: Martha pulled the door of her Fifth Avenue apartment closed, her heart thumping, re-reading the telegram she’d been dreading. Her beloved sister Charlotte needed her help. She was alone in Paris, and the threat of Nazi invasion was growing ever stronger. The time had come for Martha to make the bravest decision of her life. She needed to bring Charlotte home.
As Martha looks out of her bedroom window at the blossom-covered trees in Central Park, she is a world away from Europe and the threat of war. But when a telegram arrives from her sister Charlotte telling of the death of their Jewish friend Anita, Martha’s quiet life changes in an instant. With the threat of the Nazi invasion growing, Martha knows she must travel to Paris to convince Charlotte to return home.
When Martha arrives, she finds a city preparing for war. Soldiers patrol Paris’ cobbled streets and families talk of packing up and fleeing with whatever they can carry. Clutching her sister tightly, Martha knows that Charlotte has already decided to stay. Charlotte’s heart is in France, and as an American in Paris she believes she will be safe.
When the Nazis march through Paris’ streets and raise their flags over the city’s most beautiful buildings, Charlotte is determined not to give in. She works for the Resistance with a Frenchman named Louis, carrying messages, and hiding Anita’s family’s precious art collection from the Nazis. Meanwhile, Martha vows to help a female Jewish professor to safety in America, only to be faced with impossible odds.
But as the war rages, Martha and Charlotte’s determination will be tested like never before. And when Charlotte uncovers a shocking secret about her family which threatens her own life, can she find the strength to protect those she loves the most?

The Orphans of Amsterdam, by Elle van Rijn

The Orphans of Amsterdam book cover

Betty Oudkerk is a Jewish nursery teacher, aged only 17. Dutch Jews are being deported but the nursery is allowed to care for the children while they wait their turn. Betty and her colleagues are determined to save as many children as they can, risking their own lives…
The Orphans of Amsterdam is an historical novel set in the 1940s in the Netherlands. It is based on a true story and the main characters depicted were real people. The notes at the end relate the outcomes for various characters, some of which are heartbreaking while others are uplifting.
Tension and dread haunt the characters as they attempt to save hundreds of children from deportation to Auschwitz. The author has done considerable research in order to convey the danger, hope, terror and bravery of the characters. I did feel that the plot was a little repetitive with the process of hiding children and falsifying documents as well as the staff’s attachment to some of the children.
The book is written from Betty’s first person perspective as she deals with the occupation of her country, the despicable treatment of Jews by the Nazis and authorities, upheaval for her family as well as her developing womanhood. The style of writing is very personal and almost chatty at times which brings Betty’s character to life. Her emotions are easy to relate to as she worries for her family and despairs of the regime that is hunting them.
The Orphans of Amsterdam is a very poignant book as it is based on real life events surrounding a group of brave people. Their actions had serious repercussions for some of them but they managed to save 600 children from almost certain death.

Book Description:
Amsterdam, 1941. My hands are so shaky I’m fumbling. Where to hide? I pull open the dresser, throw aside the blankets, put the baby in and push the drawer shut, just as the nursery door swings open. The German officer marches into the room, yelling over the crying downstairs: ‘You! Grab all the children – now!’
Based on the heart-wrenching true story of an ordinary young woman who risked everything to save countless children from the Nazis.
My name is Betty. Until a few months ago, I was just like every other nursery teacher in the city… then the Nazis came and began to take our children away. Now, the nursery is part of a German deportation centre. Little ones and their families are being forced across the border, to a place called Auschwitz. No one comes back.
So when I hear there’s an underground network to save the children, I know I have to help. Sometimes the parents won’t be parted from them, and sometimes we can’t get to them in time – there are spies everywhere. But each time I smuggle the warm, innocent bundle of a sleeping baby past the Nazi guards and into the arms of the resistance, I know it’s worth the risk.
Tonight, in the pitch black, we are readying five little ones to escape ahead of a transport tomorrow. We don’t know where they’re going, and they may never see their parents again. As I button their coats and smooth their hair, my hands trembling, I hear the nightmare sound of heavy army boots on the stairs. My breath catches and my blood runs cold…
A heartbreaking and gripping read that will have you reaching for the tissues. Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, We Were the Lucky Ones and The Nightingale.

Bootcamp For Broken Hearts, by Joanna Bolouri

Bootcamp For Broken Hearts book cover

Nora’s sister, best friend and daughter send her to an exclusive retreat to try to kickstart her love life. She makes an instant friend but will romance be on the horizon…?
Bootcamp For Broken Hearts is a warm and fun novel. There is plenty of humour and wry observations but also words of wisdom that resonated with me.
The book is written from Nora’s first person perspective. Her character really came to life and I had my fingers crossed she would get a happy ending. She is happily single but stuck in a rut. Her friends and family want her to have some excitement, find happiness and someone special. They arrange for her to attend a retreat which aims to change her mindset and promote personal growth.
Nora and Will develop such a great spark that I was desperate for them to get together. The plot has some big twists in store for the pair and the anticipation was maintained until the very end. Both are skeptical about the retreat’s vision but find themselves reassessing their feelings and opinions. I found the power of positivity encouraged at the retreat really striking and thought provoking.
Bootcamp For Broken Hearts is an enjoyable romantic comedy with a lead character that is easy to relate to.

Bootcamp for Broken Hearts: A totally perfect and hilarious romantic comedy
A stunning Scottish castle, a tall dark stranger, and a vow to stay single happily ever after… what could go wrong?
Nora Brown is totally happy single. The men in her life have all been selfish, cheating liars and being alone is far easier than risking a broken heart again – for her and for her daughter. She’s only going to Romance Reboot – a posh ‘singles’ bootcamp’ at a castle in the Scottish Highlands – to keep her sister quiet.
But surrounded by tumbling waterfalls and sweet birdsong, Nora can’t deny she’s starting to relax. Even better, she finds another guest with no intention of finding love. Will Thomson has dark tousled hair, a sly grin, and a shocking sense of humour. Everybody else hears their laughter and thinks they’re falling for one another, but Nora knows she’s safe – he’s just here on a research trip.
Determined to ignore the spark between them, Nora agrees to be Will’s cover, fending off other suitors with private sniggers over wine and quite convincing public displays of affection. Just when she starts to question if she might be missing something important, she starts to suspect Will might be hiding something from her.
Will is just another cheater-in-the-making like all the others, isn’t he? Nora will go home to her daughter happy and single, just like she always intended. Even if she could find out the truth about him, she isn’t interested… is she?
An absolutely hilarious, totally unputdownable romantic comedy from a bestselling author. Perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Sorry Not Sorry and Marian Keyes.

The Holiday, by T.M Logan

Kate goes to France on holiday with her three best friends and all their families. But on the first day she sees some messages on her husband’s phone that suggests he is having an affair. But which of her friends could have betrayed her…?
The Holiday is a psychological thriller mixed with domestic drama.
The majority of the book is written from Kate’s first person perspective but there are other chapters to show other characters’ viewpoints. There are also some scenes from the past and it is not clear how they relate to the main narrative until nearer the end of the book.
I really liked Kate’s character and her dilemma of whether to confront her husband or try to work out what is happening by herself. There is plenty of tension as she seeks out suspicious behaviour and doesn’t know who to trust.
The Holiday
Book blurb
Seven days. Three families. One killer.

It was supposed to be the perfect holiday – a group of families enjoying a week together in the sun. Four women who have been best friends for as long as they can remember making the most of a luxurious villa in the south of France.

But Kate has a secret: her husband is having an affair. And a week away might just be the perfect opportunity to get the proof she needs – to catch him in the act once and for all. Because she suspects the other woman is one of her two best friends.

One of them is working against her, willing to sacrifice years of friendship to destroy her family. But which one? As Kate closes in on the truth in the stifling Mediterranean heat, she realises too late that the stakes are far higher than she ever imagined . . .

Because someone in the villa may be prepared to kill to keep their secret hidden.
