My Husband’s Daughter, by Emma Robinson

My Husband's Daughter book cover
Jack and Rebecca have decided not to have children. They enjoy their careers and private life too much to contemplate the upheaval a child would cause. But one night Jack’s ex Cara arrives on their doorstep with four year old Sophie in tow, claiming she is Jack’s daughter…
My Husband’s Daughter very cleverly makes us think about the what ifs and wonder how we would react in the same circumstances. I have always wanted to be a mum but understand the pressure society puts on women to have children, all that ideology about maternal instinct and ticking body clocks!
The plot is delivered through chapters taken from Rebecca and Cara’s perspectives in turn. This allows us to care about them and understand their motives. Both women are compassionate and caring which immediately endears them to us. Rebecca has more of a challenge as she struggles to adjust to her new role as stepmother while it is obvious that Cara is hiding secrets.
Jack is a much more difficult character to assess as we only see him through the eyes of the two women. I felt frustrated by his reluctance to step up and wanted both Rebecca and Cara to give him a harder time for shirking his responsibilities.
My Husband’s Daughter was a highly emotional book to read and there were definitely tears in my eyes for the final chapters. It was beautfully written and had me spellbound from start to finish.

Book Description:
Cara took a deep breath and let it out slowly. ‘She’s not just my daughter,’ she said as she turned in her seat to face Jack. This man she had once loved, but who she hadn’t seen for nearly five years. ‘Sophie is your daughter too.’
It is just past ten o’clock on a cold Friday evening when Rebecca and her husband Jack’s doorbell rings. Outside is a woman who introduces herself as Jack’s ex-girlfriend Cara. And she’s holding the hand of a shivering, blue-eyed, four-year-old girl. Who she claims is Jack’s daughter.
Rebecca is shocked to discover he has a child from his last relationship – even one he hadn’t known about. Because becoming parents isn’t part of their life plan. They like children, but they also love their freedom and spending time together uninterrupted; the way that, if they wanted to, they could travel the world at a moment’s notice.
But Cara needs them. Because Cara has a devastating secret that she can’t tell anyone yet. Not even her daughter. A secret with the power to change all of their lives.
A secret that will ultimately mean Rebecca has to ask herself – could she find it in herself to welcome her husband’s child into her home, and into her heart?
A heartbreaking and powerful emotional women’s fiction novel about love, friendship and what it truly means to be a parent, perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Kate Hewitt.

Emergence, by Shira Shiloah

EMERGENCE 2D Cover

Roxanne Roth is a dedicated anaesthesiologist but her former class mate D.K. Webb is less than professional. Mistakes and deaths cannot be ignored but can Roxanne get the senior doctors to take her concerns seriously?
I love medical thrillers so was excited to join in with this book tour. I was NOT disappointed! There was plenty of medical detail and the knowledge of the author really added an authenticity to the narrative.
I have never had surgery but can imagine the nerves and trust required to put yourself in the power of others. The breach of this trust is the basis for the plot of Emergence and completely compelling reading.
Dr Webb’s abuse of this power is shocking and devious. I would have liked to know more of his motives. Why did he become the way he is? His deliberate actions to maim others are devastating and his acts of vengeance on Roxanne ramps ups the tension.
Roxanne Roth is a great character, hugely likeable, dedicated to her patients and career, always striving to do her best. She also has a vulnerability due to the death of her fiance years earlier: this has made her even more determined to help patients but also held her back with romantic relationships.
In stark contrast to Webb who is selfish, abusive and quite frankly deluded about his god-like power. His cavalier attitude to other people and their lives is detestable, yet his charisma is undeniable.
Overall, Emergence was a fascinating and compelling read and I hope to read more from author Shira Shiloah soon.

Genre: Medical Thriller
A SCALPEL WIELDING VILLAIN.
A HEALTHCARE SYSTEM THAT FAILS.
A WHISTLEBLOWER THAT PROTECTS HER PATIENTS – NO MATTER THE COSTS.
Trusted anesthesiologist, Dr. Roxanne Roth, is healing from the loss of her fiancé by consuming her time with work. It doesn’t hurt that her new love interest, Dr. Justin Kirkland, spends almost as much time at the hospital as she does.
Entranced in the throes and complications of new love, Roxanne looks forward to work every day. Her time at the hospital would almost be cathartic if not for Dr. D.K. Webb, a neurosurgeon, who is quickly amassing a pile of complaints – and bodies.
Despite trying to avoid Webb, Roxanne finds herself working alongside the doctor during a routine, low-risk surgery. Fueled by cocaine and ego, Webb intentionally sabotages the case, leading to the patient dying on the operating table.
Roxanne’s tenuous grip on recovery is shattered with her patient’s death, quickly replaced by anger and a drive for justice. Now Roxanne will do anything to protect her patients from the killer on the other side of the sterile surgical field—before he can silence her as well.
In this gripping, sinister medical thriller, Dr. Shira Shiloah will leave readers wondering about the potential evil lurking behind every surgical mask.
“Authentic characters and a vivid hospital setting enhance a tense medical tale.”

Excerpt

D.K. wasn’t concerned that Mrs. Welty, his grossly obese patient, was unable to swallow. His surgery had cured herdisc and he’d functionally given her a gastric bypass for free. She would lose all that weight, so she and her husband should be thanking him. The med exec board had already flagged the lumbar fusion from last month that woke paraplegic. Now they’d flagged Welty as well and he’d been “invited” to a review next week.

He sauntered into the sushi restaurant and found Crystal, as instructed, waiting for him at the bar. Her outfit was to his specifications as well. A white see-through leotard with the thong clearly visible on her perfect booty; her red skin-tight pants hung low. She wore a white choker further accentuating her perfect deep ebony complexion. Her nails and eyelashes were as long as they were fake. Costume jewelry bracelets decorated her wrists.

He caressed her pierced left nipple and kissed her neck. She smiled and kissed his cheek.

No Fear, by Casey Kelleher

No Fear book cover

TRIGGER WARNING: this book deals with domestic abuse
Lucy Murphy, a police officer, is still haunted by the brutal murder of her mother and the face of the killer. She has the more pressing concern of her grandmother’s dementia and is struggling to stay focussed as the body of a gang crime member is discovered.
Debra Jennings is regularly beaten by her abusive gangster husband Gerard. But one night he goes too far…
No Fear is the sequel to the excellent No Escape. The Griffin Estate continues to be a source of brutality, crime and violence that leads to murders. I was instantly drawn back into the world of big personalities and high drama.
The emotional aspect of Debra’s abuse is really heartbreaking and I was anxious for her to escape Gerard’s clutches but fearful about the consequences. The danger and tension are well described and believable and it was easy to empathise with her character and feel revulsion towards her husband.
The grittiness and realism of the plot is completely compelling, as is the determination of Lucy to strive to do her best in both her career and personal life. I am hoping for another sequel as I wonder if Lucy’s character will be further developed and possibly even discover the identity of her mother’s killer.
Overall, No Fear is a really enjoyable book to read despite the nasty side to the plot and characters.

Her Final Prayer, by Kathryn Casey

TRIGGER WARNING: this book deals with child murder
Clara Jefferies has a devastating new case: the murder of two children and their mothers plus the father seriously injured and the baby unattended in his cot. Clara’s own Mormon family shun her but the community need to reconcile their animosity with the detective in order to help her catch the killer…
Her Final Prayer is the sequel to The Fallen Girls. It would work as a stand alone novel but I would recommend reading the first book to understand the mindset of the main character Clara and the town she grew up in and has now returned to.
Clara continues to face difficulties from her choice to leave her family and religion and this hampers the investigation as the town closes ranks against her. Luckily Clara has a tenacious and resilient personality so she is able to persist with the investigation despite the community’s rejection of her.
The first person narrative enables us to feel more connected to Clara although some chapters are written from other third person viewpoints but are less personal. The romantic potential for Clara and Max to grow closer continues to develop.
Her Final Prayer is an engaging and thought provoking police procedure novel from a series with a unique personal life for the lead detective.

Her Final Prayer book description:
Her pulse pounded in her ears as she scanned the house. Her eyes traveled over the porch where three empty chairs lazily rocked in the breeze, surrounded by scattered children’s toys. In the yard, there were mounds of earth. Graves. Only big enough for children…
When Detective Clara Jefferies is called to a family ranch just outside of Alber, Utah, she’s horrified to find two innocent young children murdered alongside their mothers. But she arrives at the scene quickly enough to rush their father, Jacob Johansson, to hospital where he begins fighting for his life, and to save his two-month-old son Jeremy, left untouched in his crib.
As Clara begins to investigate, nothing she finds out makes sense. Though she uncovers photos of one of Jacob’s wives in his best friend’s trailer, her flower necklace underneath his bed, there are rumors that she was in love with a different man altogether. And as the close-knit community comes together to support Jacob, Clara’s own family shut her out of the investigation…
But Clara won’t give up. With the killer still at large, baby Jeremy is at risk, and every moment her family are helping Jacob they are also in danger. To earn her family’s trust, Clara finally has to face the past, but can she do it before it’s too late?
Impossible to put down, Her Final Prayer is perfect for readers of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. You’ll race through the pages until the final heart-pounding twist.

Last Girls Alive, by Jennifer Chase

Last Girls Alive book cover

Still reeling from the events of the last book (Flowers On Her Grave), Detective Katie Scott and her cold case team find themselves with a double homicide in the opening chapters of Last Girls Alive. Both victims appear to be young women who previously resided in a care home for troubled teens but there may be a mistaken identity, and why do they have a phrase etched into their backs…?
Last Girls Alive is the fourth book to feature Katie and her team. As well as the murders, there are also unpleasant stories of abuse suffered by the girls in the past. The bodies are described with forensic detail which is objective rather than emotional.
There is plenty of action, suspense and drama in the plot as Katie investigates the murders. Her bravery is seemingly endless but she is putting her career and her life in peril for not following rules.
I had absolutely no idea about the motive or culprit until the reveal at the end. We do see flashback chapters or an abused child but the main focus is on the police team and their investigation.
Katie’s relationships have been rocked by the previous case. She is closer than ever to McGaven and they rely on each other in Last Girls Alive for support and even their lives. Cisco, Katie’s army dog gets a starring role in this book which made me smile.
Overall, Last Girls Alive was an enjoyable police thriller. It would work as a stand alone book but there are some spoilers if you haven’t read the previous books in the series.

Last Girls Alive book description:
Half-buried in the muddy earth and surrounded by puddles of water lies the naked body of a beautiful young girl. Her pale skin looks like porcelain in the early morning light. Her fragile arms bent and crooked like a broken doll.
When Detective Katie Scott is called to the discovery of a young girl buried on the grounds of a former children’s home in Pine Valley, California, she’s hopeful it’s the end to a devastating cold case she’s been working on. No one has seen Candace Harlan since she ran away from Elm Hill Manor five years ago. Her death will be a tragedy, but it will also bring peace to those who miss her most. But the girl in the ground is not Candace.
The victim is almost identical to Candace in every way, but fear grips Katie as she takes in the black ink that decorates the girl’s back—a terrifying message tattooed on her skin after she drew her last breath.
Forcing down traumatic memories of losing her own parents, Katie is certain someone mistook this poor soul for Candace, and that this crumbling home for lost girls is at the heart of this terrible crime. She sets to work digging into the tragic history of the owners who lost so many children of their own and tracking down the last six residents and the staff who cared for them—but no one wants to talk, let alone remember.
The next day, as second girl’s body is found down by the creek at high water, the same words etched into her skin. Katie’s worst fear is confirmed: someone is picking off the last of the Elm Hill girls one by one. But what does the tattoo mean? And what monster would target these innocent girls who have already been through so much?
Katie must dig deep to confront her own fears and protect the vulnerable—but as the body count rises further, will there be anyone left to save?
An absolutely gripping, dark, and totally unputdownable serial killer thriller that will keep you racing through the pages all night long. Fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh will read in one sitting!
