Paris Time Capsule, by Ella Carey

Paris Time Capsule book cover

Catherine Jordan is summoned to Paris to receive a mystery inheritance. Her grandmother was left an apartment and Cat is her only heir. She discovers a time capsule, the apartment abandoned in 1940 as the owner fled Paris and never returned. Cat is adamant that the family should inherit but love is in the air in the most romantic city in the world…
Paris Time Capsule is based on the real life discovery in 2010 of an apartment sealed since the 1940s. The owner of the apartment was Isabelle de Florian and author Ella Carey used this as the starting point for the rest of the book: everything else is fictional.
I felt immediately drawn into the mystery of the apartment’s ownership. I have read several WW2 novels in recent months so have various suspicions about the reasons for Isabelle leaving Paris but the truth is not revealed until the very end (and I was wrong).
Cat has noble intentions to give the inheritance to the family of the apartment’s owner. But the Archer family are equally determined that the wishes of Isabelle should be honoured. Together, they attempt to discover the truth behind Isabelle’s desertion of her apartment which takes them on a mini tour of France.
Added to this is the attraction between Cat and Loic which is a pleasant subplot. It is perfectly clear to us as readers that Cat and her fiance are ill suited and I was almost shouting for her to fall for Loic. This was a little predictable but also enjoyable to see Cat become her own woman and develop a confidence in herself.
I admit that some of the book felt a little clunky and the ending was slightly abrupt. However this did not interfere with my enjoyment of the book overall as I was swept up in the mystery and romance of the narrative.
I have previously reviewed Beyond the Horizon by Ella Carey.

Paris Time Capsule book description:
The parcel arrived on an ordinary morning in the mailbox of her New York apartment, postmarked Paris. It was wrapped in brown paper and tied with a silk ribbon. Little did she know that the old brass key and letter it contained were about to turn her life upside down…
1940, Paris. Life is getting desperate for young Isabelle de Florian. Alone with her best friend in her Paris apartment, Isabelle knows that they must seek safety or die. For months she has been playing a dangerous game of secrets with the Nazis, trying to keep the people she loves safe. At last, she secures passage out of the city, packs her best jewels into a small suitcase and steps into the treacherous night…
New York, 2015. Photographer Cat Jordan is shocked when she receives a letter informing her that she is the sole heir of the estate of Isabelle de Florian. She was a friend of Cat’s enigmatic grandmother, who both lived in France until the Nazi occupation forced them to flee. The letter offers few details but is clear on one point: Cat must come to Paris in person.
When she arrives, Cat is enchanted by Isabelle’s beautiful apartment. But why did she leave it to a stranger? Determined to find the truth, Cat investigates her grandmother and Isabelle’s escape from Paris, and discovers that Isabelle was hunted by the Nazis in 1940. But as Cat searches through the dusty letters in the apartment, will the secret she finds change everything she knows about Isabelle and herself?

The Ex Boyfriend, by Rona Halsall

The Ex Boyfriend book cover

District nurse Becca is convinced her daughter Mia’s illness is something more serious, possibly even a poisoning. But who would harm a three year old? Becca is having lots of family issues. Her husband is often absent, working long hours. Her sister is full of angst due to the stress of looking after their father.
Then Becca’s ex boyfriend Connor makes contact via social media and her heart is tugged in yet another direction…
The Ex Boyfriend has SOOOO many twists and turns: relentless!
I suspected everyone of harbouring secrets and did wonder about the strength of Becca’s mental health which is continually undermined. It was often uncomfortable to read as Becca’s life unravels and she really is a victim of circumstance and the machinations of others.
Becca is vulnerable due to her past and has plenty of regrets. However, my sympathy (as well as suspicions!) was also directed at others: her husband working so hard for his family, her father who is treated as a burden by his daughters, her sister who has put her life on hold to care for their dad.
There was a strong realism about the plot and characters. Family life and relationships are hard work and the rose tinted view of the past can skew our perspective of the present day. The reality of being a working mum and the worry of having a sick child was very relatable for me.
Overall The Ex Boyfriend was a very enjoyable psychological thriller as it maintained the mystery and momentum until the very end.
I have previously reviewed One Mistake, by Rona Halsall.

Then he sends her a message. He sounds happy – still kind and funny, still living across the world in Australia. But he wants to know everything about her life now. How can Becca tell him the truth? About her workaholic husband, her stressful job, and the challenges of caring for her elderly father and her longed-for, adorable but exhausting three-year-old daughter Mia?
Becca hesitates, knowing she shouldn’t even reply. But Connor lives on the other side of the world. Just how dangerous can becoming friends again be?
It feels harmless. Until Mia gets sick – in a way that no one can explain. And it starts to become clear – someone will do absolutely anything to make sure Becca never escapes her past…
A completely unputdownable psychological thriller – perfect for fans of My Lovely WifeThe Girl on the Train, and The Woman at the Window.

Dead Woman Scorned, by Michael Clark

Dead Woman Scorned KINDLE Cover
Mildred Wells has sworn vengeance on Tim Russell and his girlfriend Holly after they separated her from her son in the afterlife. Now she is ready to inflict revenge on all those who caused her suffering, both before and after her death…
We develop some sympathy for Mildred as we go back along her timeline and see her past. She and her sister and mother join a cult run by Gideon Walker who wants to learn magick. Her experiences are traumatic but she also learns magick but is put under a spell to forget. She escapes the farm and begins to have a normal life, falling in love with Thomas Pike and having a son Elmer.
From the first book in the trilogy The Patience of a Dead Man, we know that this does not have a happy conclusion, with Thomas going off to war and being killed and Mildred then murdering their son.
At the end of the first book, we discovered tht Mildred was not a ghost but a revenant: someone dead, programmed for revenge. Now that she has been eternally separated from her son, she searches for Gideon and the other revenants before turning her attention back to Tim and Holly.
Dead Woman Scorned is very different to The Patience of A Dead Man. There are flashes of sympathy with Mildred and an understanding of her motives. However there are fewer spooky moments as we see her planning to destroy other characters rather than appearing suddenly.
Now that the ghost element has gone, this book still sits firmly in the horror genre but won’t make you jump like the first. There is violence and murder as befits the genre, and I liked the tension and anticipation that builds between events.
I enjoyed this book in a different way to the first due to the change in perspective and my greater understanding of Mildred’s background. This time I was waiting for her to act and wondering how she would wreak her revenge.
In the final third of the book we are introduced to a new character Andrew and it isn’t clear until the very end what significance he may have. I can’t wait for book 3 to find out more…

PROLOGUE

October 1971—One year before the Open House

(at the end of The Patience of a Dead Man, Book One)

Tim Russell banged his palm against the steering wheel in frustration—he’d forgotten his wallet. He wondered for a second if he really needed it before tomorrow, then looked at the gas gauge—near empty. Not even enough gas to make it to Holly’s house in Laconia. He stepped on the brake and pulled over to the side of the dirt road to make a U-turn, then hesitated.

It shouldn’t be a problem—to simply turn around, drive the quarter-mile back, walk into the house and retrieve the wallet—but it was undeniably harrowing even though their struggles with the murderous Mildred Wells were over. They’d beaten her, and she’d been taken away weeks ago, but even so, Tim’s stress level was off the charts as he worked alone each day, watching over his shoulder, restoring the old house as fast as he possibly could.

He looked back before making the turn, his heart picking back up to the level it had maintained the entire day. Here I go–I’m going back in, he thought, as he postponed thoughts of the cold beer waiting for him at the convenience store a mile down the road. Best to hit and run. He stepped on the gas and made the turn, never taking his eyes off of the house and, more specifically, the turret, his designated office space during the reconstruction–the room where he’d left his wallet.

In seconds he was inside the front porch, opening the front door, faking as though there was nothing to be afraid of. Once inside, he noticed that it seemed very dark in the kitchen. It was late May, and the longest day of the year would be here in less than a month. Sunset should be at around 8 pm today, with the twilight keeping things well lit for another half-hour at least. Strange. He turned to look out the kitchen window.

It was pitch black outside, and his truck was already gone.

In a panic, he spun for the porch, deep down, becoming aware that forgetting his wallet was the greatest mistake of his life. The smell hit him right then, and he wondered why he hadn’t noticed it sooner. The front door was closed and locked, even though he’d left it open on purpose. He grabbed the knob and began to work it when three flies landed on his hand and wrist. No. She must be close. Tim turned to the dark dining room to protect his back. Mildred Wells stood in the far corner, motionless.

The Spider Next Door, by Alison Medland

The Spider Next Door is a book that will resonate with families everywhere. I don’t mind spiders but they do make me jump sometimes! This is a gentle rhyming book aimed at preschool and infant school aged children.

The playful spider goes for a visit to his human neighbours and explore their house but they are not so keen on their guest (as my family and I would react, and probably yours too!)

Younger children will love the pictures, especially spotting the spider on most pages. There is a mention of poo that made my kids squeal with delight!

The exciting thing for me is that I know the author! Alison Medland is a mum I know from the school playground, and the house and the family she describes are her own (and pretty accurate illustrations of both!)

During lockdown, Ali offered the children at our infant and junior schools to submit pictures to illustrate her book. Sadly, my children are not the artistic type so didn’t join in but I can imagine the pride on parent and child faces at the inclusion of the picture and the special mention at the end for contributors!

The Spider Next Door is just such a lovely book that is easy for parents and children to relate to. An everyday experience of spotting a spider is turned into a sweet story from the spider’s perspective: very enjoyable and bound to make you smile! 🙂

An Oxford Enemy, by Maxine Barry

An Oxford Enemy book cover

Keira Westcombe marries Lucas Harwood who is old enough to be her grandfather. They both know it is not a love match, instead a friendhsip and business deal to secure a donation of land to the Westcombe Nature Reserve that Lucas’ family would block. On their wedding day, Fane Harwood arrives and there is an instant spark between he and his new stepmother.
In a separate plotline, artist Blaise falls head over heels with reclusive horse whisperer Aidan but will he trust her with his secrets…?
An Oxford Enemy is the fourth book by Faith Martin writing as Maxine Barry to be set in Oxfordshire. This time we are out of the city and in the countryside, beautifully evoked in Keira’s determination to protect local wildlife and keep traditional village life.
The complicated passion of Fane and Keira is continually frustrated by their miscommunication and false assumptions that keep them apart. Both of them are acting out of affection for Lucas and for noble reasons (wildlife protection, family inheritance) but they won’t listen to each other. These suspicions are destructive to any relationship but the physical attraction is relentless.
I actually preferred the second romantic plot as there was less animosity between the would-be lovers. This made their relationship gentler and more enjoyable to read, yet still with plenty of passion. Blaise and Aidan both have a loneliness and grief in their backgrounds which instantly made me empathise with them and want them to have a happy ending.
The other books in the Oxford series are: The Lying Game, An Oxford Revenge and An Oxford Scandal
