Last Victim, by Helen Durrant

DCI Rachel King is returning to work after maternity leave and is thrown straight into a kidnapping case of an infant. The child is the son of local gangster and suspicion falls upon Rachel’s lover, former gang boss Jed. Can she solve the case and clear his name?
Last Victim is the fifth book to feature Rachel King, her family and her career. I have previously read, enjoyed and reviewed the first two books in the series.
Rachel and we readers are straight into the action as we learn of the baby’s kidnap. Other abductions then take place and the link to the three gangsters known as The Trio is obvious. The drug and gang underworld is touched upon and the danger is clear as threats are made to Rachel. A murder ensues which increases the challenge of the investigation.
Rachel faces tension in her personal life as her partner Jed lets her down with child care due to his business. Their relationship is put under further pressure when her boss sees Jed as a possbile suspect in the kidnapping case and removes Rachel from the investigation. She won’t be sidelined and starts looking for alternative angles to solve the case.
There is huge emotion in this book due to the kidnapping of a child which will resonate with all readers. Rachel’s conflict as she struggles with her personal and professional worlds colliding is credible and authentic. The descriptions of the danger faced by certain homeless characters also tugs at the heart. The pace of the book is quite fast and the plot twists and turns to a jaw dropping conclusion.
Last Victim is an enjoyable and intriguing police procedural and crime thriller novel.

Her Second Death, by Melinda Leigh

Her Second Death is a short story featuring detectives Bree Taggert and Dana Romano. It is a prequel to the first book in the series but is the first thing I have read by this prolific author. There are no spoilers but plenty of background information which makes me want to read more in the series.
A man’s body is discovered in a car but when the detectives arrive to notify the next of kin, they discover a child has gone missing. They race against time to find the girl and solve the murder…
Bree has an emotional response to this case due to her own experiences as a child. The details that are given are highly dramatic and emotive. Her partner Romano is aware and sympathetic of her past and I’d like to see this relationship develop both personally and professionally. There is very little information given about Romano so it increases our interest in reading more.
Being a short story, the piece is plot driven, with hints at the character development which may occur in the longer length sequels. The plot was fast paced, intense and resolved fully within the pages. I enjoyed the style of writing and found myself engrossed from start to finish.
Her Second Death is a fab introduction to a new series and I’m sure readers will be eager to find out more!

Interview with author Melinda Leigh

Detective Bree Taggert is one of your most popular characters. What is it about her that makes readers come back for more of her story?

Bree is strong and smart, but she’s also flawed and vulnerable. She begins the series as an excellent homicide detective but personally empty. A horrific childhood tragedy distanced Bree from her family and made her a loner. Her sister’s murder triggers the desire to change that. Bree takes on her sister’s case—and her sister’s kids. Bree sees her own childhood reflected in her niece and nephew and is determined not to let them grow up as damaged as she is. In order to do that, she needs to make herself vulnerable. In accepting responsibility for the children, she starts her own road to healing.

I believe readers want to root for her. They want to see her overcome her violent backstory. She often does what is right, not what is easy or comfortable. In each book, she not only solves a murder, she also makes a small step toward healing, with readers cheering her on.

You have published five books in this series so far, but in Her Second Death you write a prequel story. What made you want to show Bree on one of her first homicide cases?

I wanted to show the evolution of Bree’s professional life before she begins her personal journey. She is a complex character, and I’ve enjoyed exploring all aspects of her development.

In Her Second Death, Bree is assigned to investigate a violent crime. Tell readers a bit about the case and how she and her new partner Dana Romano work to find the killer.

Bree begins the story as a brand-new homicide detective. She and partner investigate the crime in the usual fashion, but Bree brings her own past to the table. She provides unique insight that helps her solve the case.

Bree finds a personal connection to this crime almost immediately. What effect does her own early family tragedy have on her handling a missing child case?

The case immediately strikes a familiar—and disturbing–cord in Bree. But she can’t allow her personal discomfort to interfere with the investigation. She’ll have to relive her past to solve the case.

What is next for Bree?

The next Bree Taggert novel, Dead Against Her, will be released in May. In it, Bree will need to face a more recent demon, the murder of a former deputy with whom she has a personal disagreement. When she took over the job of sheriff, Bree inherited some misogynist deputies from the previous, corrupt sheriff. In Dead Against Her, this conflict comes to an explosive and violent head.

Her Second Death Excerpt

The medical examiner pulled out of the Ford’s interior. “No rigor yet. Livor mortis isn’t fixed yet either. Cold would slow decomp, but he’s relatively fresh. Died very early this morning.” He closed his eyes and his jowly face screwed up as he did the mental math. “Six to eight hours ago, roughly between midnight and two a.m.”

Which matched the times on the surveillance video. “Detective Romano?” Reilly called. “CSU is here.”

As soon as the ME removed the body, the crime scene unit would take over.

“Do we have a next of kin for the victim?” Romano asked.

Reilly nodded. “He’s married to Kelly Tyson.”

“Let’s go notify Mrs. Tyson.” Romano turned back toward their vehicle. Once behind the wheel, she rubbed her palms together, then pulled a pair of leather gloves from her pocket and tugged them on.

In the passenger seat, Bree blew on her freezing hands. Romano peeled away from the curb.

“Wasn’t a robbery.” Bree rolled the facts around in her head. “They left cash in Tyson’s wallet. Also, they didn’t take the car. Drug deal gone sour?”

“We have no idea what happened, other than a guy got shot.”

“You don’t like any of those theories?” Bree asked.

Romano shot her a direct look. “I like evidence, not theories.”

The Girl in the Ground, by Stacy Green

The Girl in the Ground book cover

FBI agent Nikki Hunt is due to return to her job when her boyfriend Rory discovers a body at his construction site. It soon becomes clear that Rory could have a motive for killing the woman but could there be a link to Nikki’s first case back which involves human trafficking?
The Girl in the Ground is the fourth book in the Nikki Hunt series. I have previously read and reviewed book 2, One Perfect Grave. There are some spoilers about events that must have occurred in book 3 but it was easy to catch up with Nikki and her family.
Nikki has been on a career break to cope with recent events. Now she is back into the thick of it with a case that makes her question the behaviour of her lover Rory. The discovery of his ex girlfriend and his potential involvement in her death gives a great emotional pull as Nikki tries to negotiate the personal and professional.
The human trafficking plot is also very emotive as a pregnant woman goes missing. She is acting as a surrogate to a wealthy couple and the birth is imminent. The connection with past abuse and trafficking could be upsetting to some readers. A face from Nikki’s past is acting suspiciously as he asks for her help with the case. She is bombarded from all sides by secrets and maybe lies…
The Girl in the Ground is an entertaining thriller with a strong female lead who has a complicated home life.

Book Description:

She was beautiful: shiny blond hair, crystal blue eyes and the widest smile Nikki had ever seen. She thought back to what she had seen in the ground, the dirt that caked the white bones. All that remained of her now was the silver locket that was still around her neck…
When construction workers unearth a girl’s skeleton in Stillwater, Minnesota, Special Agent Nikki Hunt is called to the scene by her boyfriend Rory. Nikki knows instantly that the girl was murdered, but she is shocked when Rory immediately recognizes her. The victim was his childhood sweetheart, Becky, and he was the last person to see her before she went missing twenty-four years ago.
With the love of her life now a potential suspect, Nikki is forced to take a step back from the case. But then her colleague Liam finds lies in Rory’s statement – it appears that Becky may have been carrying Rory’s child when she was killed. Despite this, Nikki still thinks he could be innocent, and knows she must find the real killer herself if Rory stands any chance of walking free.
When Nikki finds a potential link to two pregnant girls who were found murdered years before it’s clear that this is the most twisted killer that she has ever faced. And then another girl goes missing from Stillwater. Can Nikki unearth the truth and protect the man she loves? And will she find the missing girl in time to save her life?
A dark and twisty crime thriller that will make you hold your breath as you race towards the end. The Girl in the Ground is an unputdownable new mystery for fans of Lisa Regan, Robert Dugoni and Willow Rose.

The Cold Killer, by Ross Greenwood

The Cold Killer book cover

DI Barton is called to a prison when an inmate dies. It appears to be natural causes but murder is suspected when the man’s widow goes on the run. The police need to identify the killer and begin to search for recently released prisoners. But they aren’t quick enough and more bodies are found…
The Cold Killer is the fourth book in Ross Greenwood’s DI Barton series but it is the first that I have read. I want to read them all as it was brilliant! There are no spoilers about events in previous books although other killers are mentioned but not by name.
The plot is delivered at a fast pace and I found myself reading faster and faster as I became totally absorbed by the narrative. There is some violence and allusions to child abuse but neither is too graphic. Things seem quite straightforward but the ending was a jaw dropper!
The book is written from two perspectives: The Cold Killer and DI Barton. This allows us to become immersed in both viewpoints equally and make an emotional connection with both characters. They are both written so well that they seem realistic and I could understand the emotions that underpin their actions.
The Cold Killer is in prison, due for release but haunted by the past. His best friend killed himself after abuse and now the killer seeks revenge on the abusers. DI Barton has a troubled homelife. His mum has dementia and he is relying on his wife to cope with her and their three children while he throws himself into the case. There is great banter between the crime team which allows humour to counteract the darkness of the murders and sex offenses.
The Cold Killer was a wonderful police procedural novel and crime thriller. I need to catch up on the previous books and look foward to book 5.

The Cold Killer book blurb
It’s hard to live when you think you deserve to die…
When a tired old inmate is found dead in his cell, the prison is obligated to investigate and so DI Barton attends. The men he interviews have been convicted of some of the worst things a human being can do, but it appears likely that the death was due to natural causes.
When the house of the dead man is burgled and that crime is followed by a suspicious fire, Barton desperately needs to speak to his widow, but she’s nowhere to be found.
In the space of twenty-four hours, everyone he wants to talk to has vanished. Then he receives some post which makes him believe he could be the next to disappear.
Barton’s investigation goes full circle, through a series of brutal murders, back to the prison, and all signs are pointing to the fact that he’s made a terrible mistake.
There’s a violent killer on the loose, who wants everyone to learn that some people deserve to die.
DI Barton is back as Ross Greenwood continues with his bestselling series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin.

The Lost Girl In Paris, by Jina Bacarr

The Lost Girl In Paris book cover

1940s France: Tiena Cordoba is a Roma teenager whose life is fraught with danger after the murder of her mother by the Nazis and the extermination of her people is underway. She travels to Paris and gains a new identity but will she ever be safe…?
The Lost Girl In Paris is a dual timeline historical novel set in the 1940s and 2003. In the more modern time, Madame de Cadieux is being interviewed by a young reporter, Emma, who hopes to find a link to Dachau and her own family history.
The two timelines are equally well developed with a strong female lead who features in both. Tiena/Angeline is a brave woman, proud of her Romani heritage but has previously refused to discuss her past. Now she feels she owes it to her people to reveal the horrors suffered in the years of Nazi rule. There is also a love story as she meets Lance from the Resistance and we learn from the modern timeline that their love endured.
Meanwhile, Emma is determined to interview Angeline even though it takes her away from her own sick mother. She is easy to like and has a spiky relationship with Angeline’s bodyguard which adds another dimension to the story. There are parallels between the two timelines which is interesting for the reader to compare and contrast.
Love and passion, a zest for life and an instinct for survival, identity and grief all feature prominently in the book. The final twist is hinted at all the way through but still made me smile. Nazi brutality is never shied away from: it is upsetting but compulsive reading as we must never forget the atrocities they committed or their victims’ stories.
The Lost Girl In Paris is a vivid and emotional book about love and loss.

An accidental meeting with members of the Resistance gives her a lifeline, as she is offered the chance to reinvent herself as perfumer Angéline De Cadieux.
However Angéline will never forget what happened to her, and will do everything she can to seek revenge. But vengeance can be a dangerous game, and Angeline can only hide her true identity for so long before her past catches up with her, with some devastating consequences…
Paris, 2003. When the opportunity arises for aspiring journalist Emma Keane to interview world renowned perfumer Madame De Cadieux about her life during World War Two, she is determined to take it. There are secrets from her own family history that she hopes Angéline may be able to help unlock.
