Fallen Angel, by D.K. Hood
Jenna Alton and Dave Kane are called to a murder scene at a book convention. The bodies start to appear in rapid succession but the weather proves as bitter an enemy as the killer…
Fallen Angel is the 13th book to feature Kane and Alton. There are no spoilers about events in previous books (I have previously reviewed books 4-12 in the series: The Crying Season, Where Angels Fear, Whisper in the Night, Break the Silence, Her Broken Wings, Her Shallow Grave, Promises in the Dark, Be Mine Forever. and Cross My Heart.)
A literary convention is being held at a ski resort, packed with authors, agents and publishers as welll as fans. The weather plays an important role in the plot, almost another character in its own right as the snow changes the landscape and adds an extra dimension to the setting.
The book is written mainly from the third person perspective of the police but there are also chapters showing the victims in thir final moments. Some chapters of the killer’s viewpoint are interspersed and these are written in the first person so we understand the twisted logic behind the deaths. We also are able to anticipate the next kill which increases the tension and anticipation.
The pace is fast as the police team battle against the weather and a single minded killer. However personal considerations are also important to the plot. Jenna and Dave’s relationship hits a major roadblock as another member of the team has some happy family news. I love the relationship side to the main characters and feel a real investment in them getting together after so many books where they’ve teetered on the edge of love.
Fallen Angel is a gripping crime thriller and I look forward to the next book to catch up with the characters again.

About the Book:
Hurrying along the dark, snow-covered path, she knows she’s not alone when she hears the light tread of someone behind her. Panic rising in her chest, she picks up the pace. But she doesn’t even have a chance to scream before everything goes black.
When a beautiful young woman is reported missing from her hotel room on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are devastated to discover her pale, lifeless body trapped beneath a frozen lake nearby. It’s Jenna who finds the single pearl earring buried in the frosted grass that gives them their first lead.
Just as Jenna has the remaining hotel guests safely back in their rooms, the killer strikes again, and another victim is found in one of the hotel’s lakeside cabins. Next to his bloodied body is a second pearl earring. What does it mean, and why is the killer leaving them for Jenna to find?
Interviewing witnesses, Jenna discovers that both victims were seen arguing with other residents hours before their deaths. Could the murderer be out for revenge, and how many more bodies will follow before they are truly satisfied?
As a blizzard cuts the hotel off from Black Rock Falls, Jenna and her team are trapped with the killer. Then she receives a terrifying call from a teenage girl who thinks the murderer was in her room as she slept. Can Jenna save her from becoming the next victim? And how many more innocent lives will be taken before the snow thaws?

Death on a Winter’s Day, by Verity Bright
Lasy Eleanor Swift heads to Scotland for Christmas with her entire staff. But the festivities don’t last long before a body is discovered and Eleanor finds herself with a new investigation…
Death on a Winter’s Day is the 8th book to feature the irrepressible Lady Swift and her endlessly patient butler Clifford. I enjoyed being reunited with Eleanor’s staff as they did not appear in the last book.
A loud and brash American guest is found dead at the dinner table with a knife sticking from his back. Eleanor’s friend and host is the chief suspect for the disdainful and possibly incompetent police inspector. She is determined to find the real killer but is she putting herself in danger once again?
There are plenty of characters to suspect and an old castle full of swords, axes and daggers as potential murder weapons. The pace of the plot moves quite quickly as the investigation ensues and red herrings give the story twists to keep us guessing.
Ellie and Clifford stick rigidly to their respectful friendship with a wry humour and avuncular tone that shows their true caring nature towards each other. The writing is light hearted as always and the relationship between them really shines throughout the plot. I feared that Ellie’s romance with Hugh would be put on hold due to the relocation of the plot to Scotland but, never fear, he arrives!
Death on a Winter’s Day is a hugely entertaining historical cosy murder mystery. It has a wonderful classical feel whilst also having a gentle humour throughout.
I have previously reviewed the first 7 books in the series: A Very English Murder, Death at the Dance, A Witness to Murder, Murder in the Snow, Mystery by the Sea, Murder at the Fair and A Lesson In Murder.
Book Description:
Christmas at the castle with holly, handmade gifts, snowflakes and… is that a body under the tree? Someone call Lady Swift!
Winter, 1921. Lady Eleanor Swift, amateur sleuth and reluctant lady of the manor, has been invited to spend Christmas in Scotland, at the beautiful castle of her dear friends Baron and Baroness Ashley. Even her favourite companion, master of mischief Gladstone the bulldog, is coming along to share a slice of turkey. As snow begins to fall outside, the rather mismatched group are cozy by the roaring fire, sharing a tipple over a plate of Mrs Trotman’s famous mince pies.
But after what was supposed to be a fun party game, Mr Eugene Randall is found dead at the feast. A somewhat unpopular business associate of the Baron’s from across the pond, it seems Mr Randall has certainly upset somebody. Was it what he said about Scottish whisky?
The killer must be in the castle… and when the Baron is arrested, Baroness Ashley begs Eleanor to investigate. Determined not to let her friend down, Eleanor sets about questioning the remaining partygoers.
All too swiftly, someone else is found dead, having apparently fallen from a high balcony. As if one murder wasn’t enough to put a twist in the tinsel! Eleanor knows she’s skating on thin ice now. And when she discovers a hidden document that points the finger of suspicion at the unlikeliest of suspects, she realises there’s more to the story. Can Eleanor catch the killer before it’s time for Christmas dinner?
The perfect cozy mystery to curl up with this winter! Fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey and Lee Strauss are in for a festive treat.

Behind Her Smile, by J.A. Andrews

TRIGGER WARNING: this book contains suicide
Grace is recovering from the trauma of a car accident and goes on a cruise without her husband Cameron and their children. Her companion on the cruise is her husband’s assistant who she suspects may be having an affair with Cameron…
Behind Her Smile is a very intense psychological thriller. It is written mainly in the present day with odd chapters from the recent past.
Grace is all set to enjoy some recovery time aboard a cruise ship and I was hugely jealous of her to start with! But strange things soon begin to happen which make Grace doubt herself, her family and her friends. I wasn’t envious for long when the dream cruise turns into a nightmare…
The book is written using Grace’s first person perspective so we see and feel her confusion as she experiences it. This makes events very dramatic as we understand her feelings of insecurity as well as her fears for her safety. The author is male but I felt he wrote Grace’s character convincingly with such a good insight into most women’s mindset of precarious confidence.
I did find myself confused but I was utterly swept along in the plot and Grace’s bewildered state of mind. Things simply do not add up creating an intriguing mystery. I had plenty of theories about what was happening and enjoyed seeing if I was right (and one of my many solutions was correct but no spoilers!)
Behind Her Smile is baffling and intense but hugely enjoyable.
Behind Her Smile
There are two sides to every story…
Grace Thomas and her husband Cameron live busy urban lifestyles and decided to take a short break away in the countryside to reconnect as a family with their two children. Suspecting her husband of having an affair, the trip is ruined when Cameron’s personal assistant Chantelle, arrives unannounced with some devastating news. Chantelle appears to be everywhere Grace turns, and her instincts can’t all be wrong.
Not only does Chantelle resemble Grace, It soon becomes clear that she is desperate for Cameron’s attention, but at what lengths would she go to get it?
Determined to save her marriage, Grace begins to unravel all the secrets in her relationship by scrutinising the clues. Chantelle is always in the background, but behind her smile is a dangerous lie that has devastating consequences for everyone.

The New Wife, by Sue Watson

Sam and Lauren are childhood sweethearts and their families are delighted when the couple tie the knot. But their happiness is shortlived as Lauren dies weeks after the wedding and secrets begin to unravel…
The New Wife is a psychological thriller set around an intriguing domestic situation. A terrible accident or a chilling murder? A bereaved husband or a guilty man?
The book is written from Sam’s mother Georgie’s first person perspective. I loved the way she fiercely stands by her son and feels devastated by her friends’ rejection. Georgie felt really realsitic and I genuinely liked her tenacity and loyalty.
Meanwhile we see the other characters through Georgie’s eyes. She thinks she knows her friends and family so well but gradually discovers that her knowledge of them is flawed and skewed. This drives the plot along as we share Georgie’s journey of realisation.
I had loads of suspicions as there are so many twists. Everyone seems to be hiding something and Georgie doesn’t know who to trust. There are even a couple of occasions when she starts to doubt Sam’s innocence as he admits to secrets as well. The perfect life she had clung to is in tatters with her daughter in law dead, son suspected and her best friends’ marriage crumbling.
The New Wife is a fascinating read as the plot unfolds and the characters develop.
The New Wife book description:
You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors…
My darling son, Sam, is marrying his childhood sweetheart and I couldn’t be prouder of the man he’s grown into. Walking out on his abusive father all those years ago was the best thing I ever did. And today he stands, tall and handsome, saying ‘I do’ to my dream daughter-in-law. If I hadn’t pushed them together all those years ago, he might never have found a girl as perfect as Lauren. It’s true what they say, mother always knows best.
But weeks later, Lauren is dead and police cars fill the driveway of their idyllic countryside home. As they question Sam, I sense he’s hiding something. Why won’t he look me in the eye? And who does he rush off to meet as soon as the police are gone?
Desperate, I do what every good mother would do: I let myself into Sam and Lauren’s bedroom. What I see, I will never be able to forget. My son’s beautiful new wife was hiding a dangerous secret. Can I clear my son’s name? And could my life be in danger now too?
A completely gripping, utterly twisted thriller that will leave your jaw on the floor. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, The Wife Between Us and The Woman in the Window.
