Every Little Lie, by Lesley Sanderson

Every Little Lie book cover
Anna seems to have the perfect life: a loving husband and gorgeous daughter, many friends in her local community. But she has been keeping secrets. And so has her husband…
Every Little Lie is a psychological thriller based around a couple’s secrets which threaten to destroy their family. I have previously reviewed other books by Lesley Sanderson including I Know You Lied and The Leaving Party.
Anna and Seb have both been keeping secrets from each other but a series of sinister phone calls and a mysterious woman hanging around in the street force the couple to confront the past. The book begins by flicking between Anna and Seb’s perspectives to give us tantalising hints about the secrets they are hiding.
The pace picks up significantly halfway through when little Evie goes missing and the secrets begin to emerge. I did not find the plot particularly credible as there seemed to be several coincidences. However, the whole book was certainly thoroughly entertaining until the very end which was a little abrupt and left me with a few practical unanswered questions.
The characters all have understandable motivations for their choices and actions, even though we may not agree with them. Emotional desperation has led the main characters to act on instinct to fill the sadness in their lives. I thought that the self doubt and deliberations of the characters felt realistic and makes the reader wonder how they would act in the same circumstances.
Every Little Lie is an enjoyable psychological thriller and I liked the way that the main characters were all portrayed sympathetically.

About the Book:
Lie #1 was to my new friends, about why I moved here.
Lie #2 was to my husband, about who I was before I met him.
Lie #3 was to myself, that I would get away with what I’ve done.
When I met Seb, it was like everything fell into place. My daughter Evie finally had a proper dad, and I had found the husband of my dreams – and what Seb didn’t know about my past wouldn’t hurt him.
But lately he’s been acting strangely. He won’t look me in the eye, he keeps coming home late and the other day at the school fair I saw him arguing with an unknown woman – the same woman I’ve seen hanging around outside our house.
And just as I start wondering whether I’m not the only one with a secret, Evie goes missing…
An edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist, perfect for fans of K.L. Slater, T.M. Logan and Lisa Jewell.

The Bookseller of Dachau, by Shari J. Ryan

The Bookseller of Dachau book cover
German teenager Matilda falls in love with Hans. But their love is forbidden. He is a Jew and the Nazi regime is preparing for genocide. Tilly hides Hans in her attic space but the pair live in constant fear of discovery…
The Bookseller of Dachau is a dual timeline book set in Germany under Nazi rule as well as the recent past. In 2018, Grace Laurent receives a letter from German lawyers informing her that she has inherited a property. However, her mother arrived from Germany in the 1940s as an orphan so how is an inheritance possible? She begins to read a pile of handwrItten pages and finds a love story…
Get your tissues ready… I devoured this book and went through so many emotions: fear, anger, hope, sympathy, trepidation, horror, grief. The brutality is never shied away from but the enduring power of love and hope shines so strongly through the pages of this book.
Grace finds her life unfulfilled but she has no idea of the struggles that her family endured just two generations earlier. Her journey of discovery concerning the past as well as her own realisation of the constraints holding her back is wonderful to watch unfold.
The book is written through Grace’s third person experiences as she uncovers secrets and explores Dachau, and Matilda’s first person narrative as events unfold in the past timeline. My body felt tense with anticipation whilst my heart ached for the various characters. I was completely immersed in both timelines equally, and found myself reading faster and faster wanting to know how it would end whilst also dreading a sad conclusion (no spoilers!)
The Bookseller of Dachau is a hugely emotional novel that held me captivated. Heartbreaking and heartwarming. Just wonderful.

About the Book:
Germany, 1940: “Can’t I say goodbye?” I shout, cupping my hands over my mouth. The Nazis dragging him away stare at me, soldiers with icy glares. No. No, no, no, they can’t make him leave.
In Nazi Germany, innocent people vanish every day, torn mercilessly from their homes and loved ones. When Matilda’s childhood sweetheart Hans is in danger, she doesn’t hesitate to hide him in her attic. Neighbors their whole lives, and desperately in love with one another, she’ll do anything to protect him. For months, they exist by candlelight, smuggling food and communicating in whispers. But, in the end, nothing can stop the soldiers charging in…
America, 2018: Grace opens a mustard-yellow envelope, and her world unravels. She has inherited a bookstore in the small town of Dachau from the grandmother she had no idea existed. Her mom, adopted as a baby, spent her life searching for her biological parents––and died without ever knowing.
Grace visits her legacy––a bookshop on a cobbled lane filled with lost memories. She combs through handwritten letters, unearthing the story of her grandmother Matilda. A woman whose one true love was locked within the barbed wire of Dachau––a woman who never gave up hope…
As Grace pieces together her family’s heartbreaking past, she discovers the long-buried secret of her own identity. But when she learns the truth, will she ever be the same again?
This heart-wrenching yet hopeful tale will restore your faith in humanity, and in the power of love to triumph over evil. Fans of The Tattooist of AuschwitzOrphan Train and Kristin Hannah will be blown away by this breathtakingly gripping page-turner.

The Score, by Kerry Kaya

The Score book cover

Fletch is released from prison and is shocked to find the situation at home. His son is embroiled in drugs and gangs. His daughter is married to a gang boss and runs a strip club. Their mother is a drug addict and barely recognisable. Can he take control of his family again…?
The Score is a gang crime fiction novel set in London. It is the second book in the series from Kerry Kaya but I have not read the previous book which is called The Price. It is not necessary to catch up on the plot as there is enough detail, however there are spoilers about events in the past.
Austin and Kit’s life choices have been affected by their father’s crime and enforced absence. They have a skewed version of him so he needs to work quickly to repair his reputation and heal their emotional wounds. The main characters all have a slightly softer side when it comes to family and woebetide anyone who physically or emotionally hurts their loved ones.
Fletch’s character is more relatable and likable than either of his children. He went to prison for protecting his brother but tore his family apart in the process. He has a high sense of morals despite his criminal activities and his lasting friendship with Stevie shows his gentler loyal side.
There is plenty of drama as the plot develops. A drug deal has gone wrong after the drugs were stolen. Kit’s husband suspects her brother and she cannot protect him. This produces intense danger for almost every character and ramps up the tension. As you would expect from a gangland novel, there is a lot of violence and swearing right from the first page. This is relentless but in keeping with the genre so does not seem extreme.
The Score was an intense and brutal novel but I found myself immersed in the lives of the characters, and I hope there is a sequel.

The Score
He did the crime…
Twenty years ago, Fletch avenged the gangland killing of his younger brother, Spencer and accepted his guilt. But his actions meant he had to leave his precious children, Austin and Kitty to fend for themselves. He thought they would be looked after…
Served his time…
Now a free man, Fletch returns to find his family in chaos, devastated by his prolonged incarceration. Kit is married to notorious gangster Rosco Taylor, while Austin seems hell bent on doing everything he can to create a turf war.
Fletch knows he has to do something to get his kids under control, but he also knows that the seeds of this disaster were planted long ago by his own reckless actions.
Now Fletch is back and it’s time to settle the score.
Another gripping gangland read by Kerry Kaya. Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Martina Cole, Heather Atkinson and Caz Finlay.

When The Nightingale Sings, by Suzanne Kelman

When The Nightingale Sings book cover

1997 Judy receives an award at Cambridge University, desperately hoping her former friend will attend the ceremony. 1937: Judy meets Hedwig Kiesler, a Jewish woman who has fled her husband and the Nazis. Hedwig reinvents herself as Hedy Lamarr, becoming a famous film star. She never forgets Judy but will their friendship survive the war?
When The Nightingale Sings is an historical novel set in Europe and America during the 1930s and 40s. It is based on the real life film star Hedy Lamarr which gives this an extra poignancy.
Judy and Hedy appear to be complete opposites yet their friendship is immediate. Judy completes her degree at Cambridge and then goes to work in a lab. But she is frequently undermined and dismissed by her boss because she is a woman. Hedy seems to have more power and opportunity in Hollywood. However she is passed over for serious roles and praised for her beauty rather than her intelligence.
Neither woman is satisfied with the roles that women are allowed. I felt really emotional at how they are judged and constrained by stereotyped gender roles of the historical period. Both women have extraordinary scientific minds and want to put them to use for the war effort. They have to fight for recognition in a male dominated world.
The book is written with alternating chapters from each woman to show the developments in their lives, some of which are tragic. Many chapters end with letters and telegrams between the two which give a more personal insight as they are direct and emotional commentaries on the events we have just read about.
When The Nightingale Sings is an excellently engaging and warm story of two women fighting for equality and recognition for their intelligence. I have previously reviewed Under A Sky On Fire by Suzanne Kelman.

When The Nightingale Sings book description:
1937, Europe and America. Based on a true story, this powerful novel about wartime courage and extraordinary friendship, tells how two women changed the fate of the Second World War and the course of history.
When an impossibly shy young woman named Judy Morgan finishes her studies in Physics at Cambridge University, it is with dreams of changing the world for the better.
Meanwhile, a beautiful, young Jewish woman decides to flee her beloved Austria, changing her name to Hedy Lamarr, and risking everything to get to America, as far away from the Nazi threat as possible.
A powerful friendship is formed when the two women meet in pre-war London. Judy’s passion for science a perfect match for Hedy’s brilliant talent for invention. So when the world is gripped by a war that nobody could have imagined in their worst nightmares, both Hedy and Judy know they must act now.
As their lives repeatedly collide, in Cambridge, California, Pearl Harbor and beyond—throwing both their lives into danger and tragedy—Judy and Hedy both find themselves seeking ways to end the war.
But neither of them will know that one of them is on a path of tragedy. A path that could change the outcome of the war, but also threaten their friendship forever…
Fans of The Ragged Edge of NightMy Name is Eva and Beneath a Scarlet Sky, will love this unforgettable story about love, courage and devastation set in World War Two Britain, Hollywood and Pearl Harbor. Based on two true stories of amazing ‘hidden women’ who changed the world, this novel shows the power of friendship in the darkest hours of history.

The Guilty Sister, by Arianne Richmonde

The Guilty Sister book cover

Sara lives a quiet, almost reclusive life in New York. She is an artist so works from home, only venturing out to walk her ‘handi-capable’ dog Poppy. Bradley is a high flying executive with a string of broken hearts in his wake. The pair meet and begin a fledgling relationship but are both keeping secrets from the other?
The Guilty Sister is a psychological thriller about the secrets in a new relationship.
Sara is a twin and this has affected every aspect of her life. But now she has a chance to be herself, a whole, not part of a pair unless she chooses the relationship. And she chooses Bradley. He makes a huge effort with her but she is haunted by her past and her twin.
The book is written from Sara’s first person perspective in the past (three months ago) and present, and Bradley in the third person in the past. There are also odd chapters from other perspectives to provide external opinions on the couple. We are drip-fed little snippets of Sara being interviewed by the police in the present day but are then left guessing about the relevance to events in the past.
There is mounting tension in the book as the two timelines edge closer together. I had suspicions about the secrets that Sara and Bradley are hiding but gradually found myself liking both of them and hoping for a happy ending: I won’t tell you if they got one! They both have vulnerability which adds a depth to their flawed personalities so that readers can identify with them.
The plot and characters wind together wonderfully and I became immersed in their story very early on. It is the kind of book where your brain keeps rushing ahead trying to join the dots to complete the picture. I think the tension was successfully created and maintained throughout the book.
The Guilty Sister is an enjoyable thriller with two strong lead characters. I have previously reviewed The Newlyweds and The Wife’s House by Arianne Richmonde.

About the Book:
My sister is missing. And the police think I’m to blame.
We haven’t always seen eye to eye, but I do love my sister Cece. She’s confident and free-spirited in a way I never am. And while she’s living her life to the full and posting it all over social media, I’m having early nights in my tiny New York apartment.
I didn’t mean to keep her a secret from my boyfriend, Bradley. But when he found out about her and I caught him scrolling through her pictures online, I knew I had to act before she ruined my life once again.
When the police come knocking at my door, I instantly regret wishing Cece would leave my life for good.
I didn’t want her to vanish forever, did I?
