Sweet Escape at Bayside, by Addison Cole

This book is the fourth in Addison Cole’s Sweet With Heat Bayside series. In Sweet Passions at Bayside, we saw Desiree find love despite her troubled upbringing. In this book, her sister Violet gets her chance at romance.
We met Violet in the other Bayside books. She is strong, bold and unconventional. However, there is a softer side that she keeps secret.
Sweet Escape at Bayside starts with the wedding of Desiree and Rick. The wedding is delayed while they wait for the arrival of their mum Lizza who INFURIATED me in the last book with her selfish behaviour.
Finally Lizza arrives with a date in tow who just happens to be the man that Violet fell in love with then abandoned to return home becasue her mother had said Desiree was ill.
Thankfully, it is just a misunderstanding and Violet and Andre soon pick up their relationship. However, the prospect of a long distance relationship looms…
I loved reading about the sweet side to Violet. There is a lot of emotion in this book and the theme of loss comes through strongly. There is grief for lost friends, a mourning of the childhood she and Desiree could have shared, and a sorrow for past mistakes. Along with that come the themes of love and hope, remembrance and change.
I enjoyed having a greater understanding of Lizza’s motives and believe she isn’t as selfish as she appears. I think that it is an important message for children that our parents want the best for us even when we can’t see what that is yet. We also need to learn to see our parents as people in their own right, recognise they can make mistakes and accept (and forgive) their choices.

NEW RELEASE……..

Two years ago Violet Vancroft was a nomadic artist who never wanted to put down roots and Andre Shaw was a prominent Boston physician whose roots ran too deep to unearth. Their love didn’t stand a chance—or at least that’s what Violet believed when she received a plea for help from the sister she’d never really known—so she snuck away like a thief in the night.

Now Andre travels the world setting up new medical clinics, and Violet has finally found the family she’d always craved and the roots she’d never known she wanted. When their paths cross unexpectedly, it’s not the reunion either one imagined. But they’ve never stopped loving each other, and after the dust of anger and hurt settles, passion ignites even hotter than before. As the end to Andre’s time at the Cape nears, reality sets in, leaving them no closer to a future than they were before. Violet and Andre are forced to dig deep to discover if they’re destined to live apart forever or if true love really can conquer all.

The Castle Mystery, by Faith Martin

What a delightful murder mystery (if such a thing can exist!)
The Castle Mystery has a classic feel about it from start to finish and is firmly in the Agatha Christie style of books that I have always loved. I think this would also suit fans of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey due to the setting in a stately home with clear class divisions.
I honestly have no idea when this book is set as it could be any time in the last 50 days or 50 years. Avonsleigh Castle is separate from the normal passing of time, a stately home clinging to the remnants of tradition.
Into this setting arrives cook Jenny Starling. This is actually the fourth book that has featured this amatuear sleuth but this works perfectly well as a stand alone novel.
Governess Ava Simmons is murdered one afternoon whilst Lord and Lady Avonsleigh are entertaining guests. Every character amongst the servants is acting suspiciously and has something to hide. Lady Avonsleigh asks Jenny to help find the culprit when she discovers that she has past experience of amateur sleuthing. Obviously the police are not too happy about havig their authority usurped but Jenny wins them round with her detective skills and her cooking!
This is a great read and I’d love to go back and read more in the series to see how Jenny lived before joining Avonsleigh. The characters are quite stereotypical but that serves to make the whole book seem timeless and comfortable. The book is easy to read and is finished all too quickly!
The epilogue made me chuckle as well as be mildly miffed (not in a bad way!) but I will let you read for yourselves why… I figured out the means, motive and opportunity but loved the red herrings that were planted along the way to keep Jenny and the reader off the scent of the real murderer.

The Castle Mystery (Jenny Starling #4) by Faith Martin
Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These charming mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is.
Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.
Please note this book was first published as “AN INVISIBLE MURDER” under Faith Martin’s pen name JOYCE CATO.
Jenny Starling has her dream job cooking for Lord and Lady Avonsleigh in a genuine castle.
Then one of the castle’s treasures, a fabulously jewelled dagger, is used to murder a staff member. The victim is found stabbed through the heart in the conservatory.
Lady Avonsleigh insists that Jenny help the police find the murderer.
But how can Jenny solve this case when the murder was committed in front of several reliable witnesses, none of whom saw a thing?
This is the fourth of a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the final page.
Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.
PRAISE FOR THE JENNY STARLING BOOKS
“A wonderful protagonist.” Mystery Women
Classic murder mystery story with a twist at the end” Oxford Times
“Jenny is an attractive, intelligent Rubenesque heroine, and the cast of characters above and below stairs are captured affectionately and wittily.” EuroCrime
“Really enjoyable and easy to read.” Anne-marie
JENNY STARLINGIn her late twenties, Jenny Starling is an impressive woman. Physically, she stands at 6ft 1inch, and has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. Curvaceous and sexy, she’s a modern single woman, living the lifestyle that suits her – that of a travelling cook. Her famous (and now very rich) father, is a ‘celebrity’ cook, divorced from Jenny’s mother. Jenny drives a disreputable cherry-red van, and is happy travelling the country catering events and cooking great food. She is on a one-woman crusade to bring back ‘real’ food. And definitely doesn’t like having to divert her attention from achieving the perfect Dundee cake or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve a murder. She finds crime very distracting, especially when there is chocolate to temper or pike to poach. Nevertheless, she is very good at reading people, and with a quick and agile brain, becomes very good at unmasking killers. And her always-undaunted sense of humour goes a long way in keeping her sane when all around her people are dropping like flies.

Guess How Much I Love You board book and jiggle toy review and giveaway!

World Book Day is almost upon us and I am ashamed to admit that I have NEVER read this classic children’s book!
Until now that is, obviously!

This gentle book, perfect for preschoolers, is a story of love between parent and child.
One of the things that astonished me when I became a mother was how much love it was possible to feel for my children. I cried because it was so overwhelming. I told my parents and they said “now you know how we’ve felt all these years” and hugged me close. I look forward to my own children having the same revelation when they have their own kids!

The words and pictures complement each other beautifully and I know why this is a family favourite in so many homes, mine included now!
Board books are perfect for little hands. Zach is not always the most careful of fellows!

The jiggle toy has a ring attachment for children to grab hold of or to hook onto a pram or pushchair to avoid being dropped.

Reading is such an important skill for children to develop and Rainbow Designs Ltd has many different classic stories and characters to inspire a love of books in children and their parents. They have kindly offered to provide a prize of the Guess How Much I Love You board book and jiggle toy to one lucky winner: enter via the widget below!

February vegan favourites

February might be over but looking back there were lots of new products and new recipes that I enjoyed so here is a round up of my favourites:
Meals out
The good (Pizza Express in Basingstoke): I tried the jackfuit putanesca gluten free pizza and it was delicious.

The bad: Harvester in Frimley for our anniversary meal where I was charged extra for less food after requesting my peas be swapped for chips. Such a shame the portion was so stingy as the taste was so good!

Main meals
I made this amazing risotto: check out the recipe, so simple and tasty! I served it with this new garlic bread from Sainsburys which was a good accompaniment but a little dry on its own.

A bit more effort went into this tofu stirfry but it was totally worth it. Chris came home to the most amazing kitchen smells and it tasted great

Other shop bought discoveries are garlic naan from Sainsburys, Vegable falafels with a chilli sauce filling and burger in Aldi (not too keen on the beetroot but the sweet potato was great!)

Swwt treats
For Valentine’s I made this pud which can be served as a mousse or ice cream (find the recipe here)

I also enjoyed these vegan sweets which were a free gift from my order with the Vegan Supplement Store. Sorry kids, too good to share!

I love lemon meringue pie but for a quick pudding I often just make the filling. I used to use an egg but tried it out with a flax egg and it worked perfectly!

Another recipe I adapted was to create these vegan chocolate pancakes, definitely a winner!

A special treat was this chocolate torte from Asda. More expensive than I would usually buy but it tasted good.

Anything above catch your eye? Surprised it was all wheat/gluten free and vegan?

The Housewife, by Valerie Keogh

Diane is recovering from a breakdown. She doesn’t know what happpened as she has amnesia and the doctors want to wait for her memory to come back naturally. Her husband is being supportive but is obviously frustrated at her lack of progress.
She decides to work voluntarily in a charity shop while her daughter goes to nursery. On her first day, a woman comes in and leaves abruptly. After that Diane sees her everywhere: is the woman a stalker or is it all in her imagination?
Diane starts to doubt her sanity. She starts hearing a baby crying. She is drinking heavily. She  thinks her husband is having an affair. Who can she trust?
This is an incredibly powerful read. The first chapter charts Diane’s whirlwind romance, marriage and pregnancy. It makes for difficult reading to know what she has given up to be with the man that she loves. The disintegration of Diane’s apparently perfect life is heartbreaking to read.
As a reader, we are invited into Diane’s mind as she tries to work out whether she is really experiencing the sights and sounds that torment her. The wonderful thing about this book is we are left just as confused as she is, jumping to conclusions and being paranoid about the motives of others.
I did guess the big plot reveal at the end of the book and felt very pleased with myself for working it out. My only criticism is that I didn’t like the epilogue as I felt that Diane acted out of character. I love Valerie’s previous book (check out my review!) and am looking forward to the next!

Description:
“There’s no place like home” – that’s what I tell myself as I pull another flawless meal from the oven. This perfect house on a quiet street was supposed to be my sanctuary, a place to recover. But everything changed the moment I saw that woman in the charity shop. She triggered something dark, buried deep within my memory…
Now I’ve started forgetting small things, like locking the front door.
And bigger things, like remembering to pick my little girl up from nursery.
I feel terrified every time I pass through a particular spot in our living room.
And sometimes, when I’m alone, I’m sure I can hear a baby crying…
I think the woman in the shop knows what happened to me. But if I can’t trust myself to believe she’s real, who will?
One of the most gripping and heart-pounding psychological thrillers you’ll ever read! If you were totally hooked by, The Wife Between UsThe Girl on the Train or The Woman in the Window you won’t be able to put this jaw-dropping thriller down until it’s finished.

Author Bio:
Valerie Keogh grew up reading Agatha Christie so when she started writing it seemed natural to write crime novels. She writes two different series, one based in Ireland featuring Garda Sergeant Mike West and a grittier one based in the UK featuring Nicola Connolly, a serial killer.
The Garda West series: THAT ONE MAY SMILE, CLOSE RANKS, MURDER ON CLARE ISLAND and DEATH IN FOXROCK.

The Hudson and Connolly series: DEADLY SLEEP, TWISTED POWER, BITTER BUSINESS, and WICKED SECRET.

Valerie has also written a stand-alone psychological thriller, Exit Five from Charing Cross

In March 2018, Valerie signed a two-book contract with the publisher, Bookouture. The first of these, Secrets Between Us, is out now. The Housewife is published Feb 27th 2019.
