The Crying Season by DK Hood

I did not want this book to end! But it was so good that I was reading faster and faster!
It is hunting season but a serial killer is on the loose and hunting human prey. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Dave Kane need to find the killer before more tourists end up dead.
The violence of the attacks and murders is quite graphic at times but understated at others so this enables the reader’s imagination to take over…
I was surprised to learn this is the 4th book in the series as it works so well as a stand alone book.
There is a spark between Kane and Alton that I hope will be developed in later books. They put themselves in danger for each other but also to protect their community.
We see inside the killer’s mind thanks to a two strand plot narrative. The killer is not revealed until right at the end but we see the murders from his perspective.
I absolutely loved this book from start to finish!

The Stolen Boys by Joy Ellis

This book is the fifth in the series to feature police officers Jackman and Evans. This books works well as a stand alone novel but there are lots of references to their last case which does make me deperate to know what happened!
The police are working on several different crimes but are they linked? Thefts of ridiculously expensive clothes, steroid smuggling and runaway teens. Then a body is found: is it connected to one of these cases?
Although I cannot imagine ever spending a lot of money of clothes I know others that do so I did not find the plot implausible. The workings of the criminal groups is fascinating and well thought out. I felt sympathetic to those involved due to their desperation for money and scorn for the mastermind who used them for his own gain.
I really enjoyed this book but a lot of the police get injured in the line of duty! The relationships between the police officers is well established and they have a great rapport and respect for each other. There are tensions with other characters but this allows us to see different aspects of their personality.
The previous case comes back to prominence at the end of the book setting it up for the next book in the series and I can’t wait to read more!

THE STOLEN BOYS by Joy Ellis
Do you love a gripping mystery with a huge twist? Then try this book by a #1 best-selling author now. You won’t be able to put it down. By an author everyone’s talking about.
A MYSTERY WHICH WILL CAPTIVATE YOU TILL THE STUNNING ENDING
A crime wave has hit town. The target is a highly sought-after brand of streetwear called Hybird X, clothing that costs a fortune and resells for unbelievable prices. Houses are burgled, young men mugged on the streets . . . and finally a young man dies, all for the sake of his shoes.
And then another boy’s body is found in a pile of rubbish. Meanwhile illegal steroids are flooding the streets.
A shadowy figure called Darke and his teams of young criminals seem to be behind it all.
Detectives Jackman and Evans must take on a fiendish criminal, while still haunted by Alistair Ashcroft, the serial killer they never caught.
WHO IS DARKE AND WHAT DOES HE REALLY WANT?
Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending.
THE DETECTIVES
DI Jackman leads the investigation. He is extremely smart and has a knack for bringing out the best in his diverse team. DS Marie Evans is haunted by the loss of her husband in a motorbike accident. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and colleagues.
Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Sarah A. Denzil, Robert Bryndza, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

“I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!
And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our two second generation Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I can, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre was suddenly clear. I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!”

#Blogtober18 day 16 perfect recipes for #NationalBakingWeek

What is the perfect recipe? One that works first time? One that you can adapt to suit your available ingredients or food allergies? One that your kids will eat time and time again? One that uses up leftovers and prevents waste?
Last week, as you may have seen on my #Project365 post, I made lemon cakes and they fulfilled all of those questions!

I had bought lemons but not got around to using them. It is a tried and tested recipe that worked from the first time I first tried them over 5 years ago. They can be adapted easily so can be vanilla, chocolate or any other flavour and work well with gluten free flour. This time I topped them with a lemon frosting that was in my goodie bag from Blog On X and needed using up.
Ingredients
180g caster sugar
2 eggs
180g SR flour
zest of  large lemon or 2-3 smaller ones (depending how strong you like the flavour)
130ml oil (I used vegetable)
130ml milk

Method
Preheat oven to GM5.
Whisk the sugar and eggs together for 4-5 minutes.
Add the rest of the ingredients and fold in carefully.

Place in cake cakes (makes about 20)
Bake for 15-20 minutes.
Remove from oven and allow to cool on a rack.
Ice or decorate if required.

These cakes are very light and you would never know they were gluten free. I always get compliments when I make them and the kids love them. The frosting I used was very strong so I was worried the kids wouldn’t be keen but they LOVED it!

The Warning by Kathryn Croft

Before starting my review, I have to note a trigger warning: this book deals with the death of a child and internet grooming.
Oh my goodness, what a book! I was completely hooked right from the start. Zoe and Jake have had to face the unimaginable pain of losing their 14 year old son Ethan in a river accident alongside his best friend Josh. They are trying to hold the family together for the sake of their older son Harley who is taking his A levels and wants to be a doctor.
But then Zoe receives an email which suggests Ethan’s death was not an accident. Jake wants to ignore the message as a sick joke but Zoe is determined to find the truth. She is certain that Josh’s family are hiding something and Ethan’s friends are keeping secrets but can she persuade them to tell her the truth?
There is another narrative strand throughout the book which doesn’t link up to the rest of the plot until the end and really keeps the reader guessing about the connection. A child is being contacted online by someone claiming to be a teenage girl but is actually someone much older. It is uncomfortable reading but it well written.

My little boy’s room was empty, his bed neatly made. Alarm bells should have rung immediately. Then the knock on the door came. All I remember is a thick fog wrapping itself tightly around me. This couldn’t be happening to us.
Three years ago, nurse Zoe’s son Ethan was found drowned in a muddy river by their home, along with his best friend Josh. With no witnesses, their deaths were ruled a tragic accident.
Heartbroken, Zoe and her family, move away from her home. They’re just beginning to get back to some kind of normality, when, out of the blue, Zoe receives an anonymous email:
You need to find out the truth about what happened to your son. Don’t let this rest. Don’t believe the lie.
Shaken, Zoe starts an obsessive hunt for the truth. But why is her husband so reluctant to help?
And why is Josh’s mother so determined not to believe her?
An absolutely unputdownable psychological thriller about a mother’s desperate search for the truth. Fans of The Girl on the Train, and Gone Girl will be hooked from the very first page.

A Love So Sweet by Addison Cole: review and giveaway

Being a fan of Addison’s Seaside and Bayside series of books, I was looking forward to this new series about the Braden family. These books are also Sweet with Heat so they are not explicit in terms of content or language.
I’ll be perfectly honest, it took me a while to get used to the main characters’ names being Treat and Max. I think it is an English thing!
Treat and Max had been getting on VERY well but then a misunderstanding has the potential to derail their whole relationship. Neither one can forget the other though…
Their relationship quickly gets back on track but both of them are dealing with issues from their pasts. Treat’s mother died whilst he and his siblings were still children and he has a strained relationship with some of his brothers. Max had a toxic ex-boyfriend and the way he treated her in quite unpleasant.
Thankfully their love overcomes their problems and the book sets us up for finding out about the rest of the Braden family’s love lives. All of the characters are likeable and distinctive so there is a lot to look forward to for sequels!
