My review:
I had not read either of the previous books by Daisy White which feature Ruby Baker but this did not get in the way of me enjoying this third novel.
Ruby is having a day out at the races when a woman is killed by running into the horses: was she deliberately trying to kill herself? Was she protesting in the same way as Emily Davies the suffreagette? Was she murdered?
The young woman was Rita Stonehill, a local girl with a troubled love life and sad home life. Her brother asks Ruby to investigate as the police are convinced it is suicide and won’t look any further into the case. The local stables are set on fire, a horse goes missing and Ruby is convinced these crimes relate to the death of Rita.
I didn’t realise that the book was set in the 1960s until I read about photos needing developing and decided to go and read some background info about the other books. My sister went to uni in Brighton so I know the area reasonably well and this added to my enjoyment of the book.
This was a good mystery story and there were plenty of twists and red herrings. The world of the 1960s is described well and the characters make the reader concerned about their wellbeing. I know very little about racing but this was not a problem to understand the situation being described in the book.
I would now like to read the other books in the series and wonder what will happen with Ruby next as her family issues are brought to the fore right at the end of the book.

Hi I’m Daisy White – mum, entrepreneur, and writer. I started off self-publishing, then signed YA series to two fabulous US publishers.
I’ve always wanted to write crime but none of my initial manuscripts were anywhere near good enough to show the world!
In 2016 I rewrote an earlier idea and entered it into the UK International Novel Writing Competition. It was long-listed and that gave me the confidence I needed to submit to publishers.
‘My second novel for Joffe Books, and book two in the Ruby Baker Seaside Mysteries, ‘Before I Found You’, was published in Feb 2018 and became an immediate Amazon bestseller.
My first story for younger children will be published in an anthology for Patchwork Raven later this year. I’m also finishing off a standalone thriller, which I’m really excited about!
Writing is an obsession, and a passion, and I am extremely lucky to have been able to develop my dream into a business. I enjoy sharing my journey, and the knowledge I have gained along the way. I also love to meet other writers, readers and business owners.

Reading is one of the greatest pleasures in my life. I am very thankful that my children all love books too.
Working in education, I know that reading is essential in order to be able to access the rest of the curriculum. I started reading to Matthew while I was pregnant. I chose rhyming books and would read them to him and rub my tummy. I carried on wth the same books after he was born and gradually expanded our collection (we now have hundreds, if not thousands!)
I feel guilty that I didn’t read in the same way toAnya and Zach. They had the benefit of listening while I was reading to their older sibling(s) but I didn’t read to either of them when they were a bump (no time!) Matthew is now a voracious reader and loves non fiction best. Anya is growing in confidence and there hads been a huge advance in her reading skills since she joined Year 1.
I also make sure the children see me reading and know I enjoy it. This is much easier now that I am comfortable reading on my Kindle app on my phone: it took me a long time to adapt!

My review:
Nathan and Katie are hiding. From the world, but also keeping their feelings hidden from each other. They have been through a tough time together after Nathan’s twin brother was revealed as a vicious murderer before attacking Katie and then being killed.
Suddenly, it is revealed via a blog that Cameron’s crimes were based on murders that Nathan had described in a teenage journal and one of their former colleagues is murdered and they become the main suuspects.
Nathan and Katie return to their previous lives to try to find the real killer but can they trust their police colleagues, friends or even each other…?
This book was enjoyable but, be warned, there are grisly passages which have the capacity to shock, particularly the description of the murder right at the start.
The main characters are likeable: you want them to resolve their problems and move on with their relationship.
There are many references to events that took place in the past so I had a feeling that I was missing part of the story by not experiencing it with the characters. This is the second in the series so I wish I’d read the first book before this one but there was enough information to make the plot, narrative and character motivation easy to understand.
Will I be reading more from this author? YES!

I couldn’t wait to start this book set in Elizabethan England in the 1590s. I was not disappointed: it was brilliant!
The main character Nicholas Shelby is a physician and one day he attends a lecture where a young boy’s body is dissected. Nicholas is convinced the child was murdered but he cannot find anyone to take him seriously.
He then endures heartbreak when his wife dies in childbirth. He feels that he should have been able to use his medical knowledge to help save her. Plunged into despair, he tries to take his own life but is rescued by Bianca, a Paduan tavern keeper with an extensive skill in herbal concoctions.
Nicholas regains his strength but the boy’s murder continues to occupy his thoughts. Then another body is discovered with identical marks on the leg which would have caused extensive bleeding but this body was then gutted.
The authorities are still not interested in the murders of vagrants: they have heresy and treason to concern themselves with! But then Nicholas is forced to act as a spy and is able to follow his own agenda too, putting himself and Bianca is great danger…
This was a simply brilliant read. I was swept up in the world of Elizabeth’s England which Perry describes accurately and in awful detail. The brutal nature of the crimes and everyday experiences conveys the struggles that all members of the society faced whether high or low born.
