Silence on the Island, by Stewart Giles

Silence on the Island book cover

Liam O’Reilly is not enjoying the quiet of Guernsey in January. But the peace is shattered by the murder of an elderly woman from a care home. Her body is found on a grave in the military cemetery. Other victims are then attacked and Liam has no idea on motive…
Silence on the Island is the 7th book to feature Detective Inspector Liam O’Reilly and his team on Guernsey. It would work as a stand alone book although the character relationships have developed over the preceding books.
The latest murder mystery is centred around a care home. Elderly residents are abducted and killed with no apparent motive. Liam doesn’t trust the owners or the staff so there are plenty of potential suspects to investigate.
The dynamics between the police characters is enjoyable to read. Liam really has an issue with one particular officer who also happens to be dating Liam’s daughter. There wasn’t too much forensic detail or violence compared to other books in the series but the pace remained relentlessly fast.
The plot developments kept me hooked and I had no idea who was responsible. I really love this series but I felt a little dissatisfied with the ending as the motive is not fully explained. This is probably quite realistic as I’m sure many cases are not completely understood.
Silence on the Island is an entertaining and fast paced detective novel.

Silence on the Island: A Detective Liam O’Reilly Mystery (DI Liam O’Reilly mysteries Book 7)
From bestselling author, Stewart Giles, comes a new addition to the brilliant Detective Liam O’Reilly series.
January on the island of Guernsey is grim. It’s dark and depressing. Detective Liam O’Reilly expected as much.
What O’Reilly didn’t bargain for was the eerie silence on the island in the dead of winter.
And when an old lady disappears from a care home and reappears, dead on the grave of a soldier who died 80 years ago, O’Reilly has absolutely no idea what to think.
When more old people are found, murdered amongst the tombs of these dead soldiers, and O’Reilly is met with silence everywhere he turns, he really has no idea why these people had to die.
Then he finally hears the truth.
But it is a truth that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brought together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.
The Miranda trilogy is something totally different. A psychological thriller trilogy. It is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.
The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow with book 17 now available. In addition, I have a new series featuring an Irish detective who relocated to Guernsey. The first 7 books in the Detective Liam O’Reilly series are now available. There are also 3 stand alone novels.

Ghosts, by Stewart Giles

Ghosts book cover

A series of execution style killings of police officers in York. DS Jason Smith is anxious to find the killer quickly but the only witnesses describe the culprit as a ghostly figure. And Smith has seen it too…
Ghosts is the 17th book to feature DS Smith and his colleagues. There are mentions of events for previous book but no spoilers.
OMG!!! The book is fast paced, dramatic and absolutely gripping. It is a quick read but doesn’t feel rushed. I was swept up in the action and devoured the pages in a couple of hours.
Smith is coping with events from his past as well as a migraine. But nothing matters more to him than finding the cop killer to save his friends and colleagues. The sinister ghostly figure is a recurring motif through the book as it attacks police officers in their homes and on the streets.
The tension and anticipation is high over the course of the book. These crimes have a shock factor for us as well as the characters in the book. The murders are not gory as they are execution style so they are horrifying in their simplicity and speed.
The humour of Smith’s relationship with superior officer Smyth lightens the tone of the book as well as adding an extra dimension to the characters. Plus there is Smith and Whitton’s relationship providing a loving but banter filled personal life (loved the car related chats they have in this book) which feels natural and realistic.
Ghosts is another excellent addition to the Jason Smith series.

Ghosts : A Detective Jason Smith thriller
Police officers are being killed in York. The murders are cold, calculated and methodical. This killer leaves nothing behind besides a sense of dread.
When someone Detective Jason Smith has worked with ends up dead it becomes personal, but this phantom leaves nothing to even hint at why this is happening.
The only breakthrough in the case comes from several witnesses who claim to have seen a ghost-like figure around the time of the murders.
Facing ghosts of his own, and on the brink of breakdown Smith is pushed even further over the edge when he discovers the sick reality behind these murders.
This isn’t about murder – this is about something else altogether.
These ghosts will haunt Jason Smith for the rest of his life.

At Death’s Door, by Anna Legat

At Death's Door book cover

Sam and Maggie are taking part in an archaeological dig when a body is discovered. But it is much more recent than expected, and the killer may still be alive…
At Death’s Door is quite a quirky crime mystery novel. It is the second book in the series and I have not read the first. However, there are no spoilers about events from the previous book.
Maggie is a wonderful character and I liked how she is presented via the first person. She is psychic and can see spirits which has significant impact on her in terms of the murder investigation as well as her personal life as tragedy strikes. I really liked this element to the book although one vision was particularly heartwrenching.
The discovery of the body takes a back seat after the initial discovery as Maggie’s personal life and family relationships takes centre stage. This adds a great deal of emotion to the book which is softened by Maggie’s eccentric personality and humorous escapades.
The book is written from third person perspectives, mainly focussed on Sam and Andrea, but also Maggie in the first person. I found it a little tricky to get into the book due to the style of writing and how it jumps between characters and in time to relevant flashbacks in the past. However, by a third of the way through I had settled in and coped better with the changes.
At Death’s Door has a strong plot and lead character and I’m glad I persevered to get to grips with the style.

At Death’s Door
When Maggie Kaye and Sam Dee join the Bishops Well archaeological dig, they are as surprised as everyone else to unearth a body that was buried there less than fifty years ago. It can’t possibly be the remains of an ancient Celt.
Maggie, with her usual flair – and psychic intuition – is convinced that there is more to this discovery than meets the eye. And some Bishops residents seem to know a lot more about the case than they are willing to let on.
But nobody is as shocked as Maggie when a face from the past – a face she thought she’d never see again – appears in the village, and long-hidden secrets begin to surface.
With danger at her door, and Sam by her side, can Maggie uncover the truth before it’s too late?

Christmas on the Island, by Stewart Giles

Christmas on the Island book cvoer

DI Liam O’Reilly and his team are hoping for a peaceful Christmas but crime never stops! An apparent suicide is discovered on a boat but it soon becomes obvious that it was murder. Soon other suicides are found and also proved to be murder. Can Liam find the killer or is Christmas ruined?
Christmas on the Island is the sixth book in the excellent Liam O’Reilly series from Stewart Giles. I really love this series and have previously reviewed a number of books from this brilliant author.
This book did not disappoint my high expectations! Liam and the team are as wonderful as ever with a glorious banter between them, antagonism and a variety of personal entanglements. All of the police team are really well developed and full of little details that bring them to life from the pages.
The narrative style is dialogue driven as usual but there were also some rather gruesome forensic details as the bodies start to rack up. The plot is fast paced and relentlessly compelling with Liam frantically trying to understand the motive behind the deaths. I enjoyed the seasonal festive setting and this added an extra layer as the team face the prospect of a ruined Christmas due to their dedication.
Christmas on the Island is a fantastic crime and police thriller and a great addition to one of my favourite series of books ever!

DI Liam O’Reilly mysteries Book 6: Christmas on the Island
CHRISTMAS: The silly season. Or, the suicide season?
A string of suicides on the island arouses Detective Liam O’Reilly’s suspicions. He understands that the suicide rate tends to increase during the festive season, but the ways in which these people have chosen to end their lives doesn’t feel right.
As O’Reilly and his team dig deeper they soon learn there is much more to these apparent suicides than they initially thought and O’Reilly realises there is a seriously damaged mind on the loose.
Dubbed the suicide killer by the press, this madman will stop at nothing to get his depraved message across and O’Reilly is the only one who can put an end to his killing spree.
This festive season is one the Irish detective will never forget.

Revenge On The Island, by Stewart Giles

DI Liam O’Reilly gets a brick thrown his window with a note attached from a killer he sent to prison fifteen years earlier. Now Patrick Finney, remorseless and relentless, is on the run and looking for revenge…
Revenge On The Island is the fifth book to feature Liam and his police team on the island of Guernsey. There are a few mentions of events in the last book but I don’t think there are any spoilers.
Once again the pace is at breakneck speed as Liam’s life is turned upside down. He goes through a whole host of emotions, with fear and anger being the most prominent. The murders that Finney committed culminated in a victim with a personal link to Liam and now Finney wants to destroy Liam’s career.
I was completely hooked. The majority of the book is dialogue based as the characters interact. Reationships within the team are well established as well as rivalry with other agencies which come to the fore with devastating consequences for Liam as he attempts to prove his innocence. There are lovely little details that bring the characters to life, for example Liam’s reaction to his obstinate cat.
It is always a sign of a good book when you feel for the characters. I found myself wanting to shout at Liam for some of his choices which you know will come back to haunt him. He has a staunchly loyal team but feels isolated as his rival besmirches his reputation and the killer is set to ruin him.
Revenge On The Island is a quick read but thoroughly entertaining and gripping.
Revenge on the Island book cover
Revenge on the Island book blurb:
A compelling mystery with a dark twist (DI Liam O’Reilly mysteries Book 5)
REVENGE IS SWEET.
How do you solve a murder when you’re the number one suspect?
Fifteen years ago Patrick Finney was sentenced to life for the brutal murders of four women. It was one of the most high-profile cases in Irish history and one that defined Detective Inspector Liam O’Reilly’s career. O’Reilly was instrumental in bringing Finney down.
Now Finney has escaped from a high-security prison and he’s not content to stay on the run.
He wants revenge and he’s prepared to stop at nothing to get it.
Abandoned by the very people he’s employed by O’Reilly finds himself in a predicament that leaves him running out of options. There is only one man who can help him. But it’s a man he vowed he would never contact again, and the consequences of his association with this phantom could be far worse than O’Reilly could ever imagine.
When the hunter becomes the hunted the rules of the game have to change.
This is a chilling mystery that O’Reilly will never forget.
