The Innocent Girls, by B.R. Spangler

The Innocent Girls book cover

The Innocent Girls is the second Detective Casey White book and I have not read the first in the series yet. There are links to the previous book and the case involving Casey’s kidnapped daughter, however this works as a stand alone novel.
Brutal murders and runaway teens face Casey and her team. Violent murders and some bodies also have symbols carved in them while others don’t. The runaway girls have connections with a preacher who has a huge online presence: could there be a link?
A mix of narratives are used: some chapters are seen thtrough Casey’s first person whilst others are third person viewpoints of the killer, victims and other characters. This gives us different perspectives and help to develop our empathy with Casey as she struggles to assemble the case.
Casey has a complicated home life with a kidnapped daughter and an ex who turns up in this book trying to convince her to give an interview. She is keeping her new love Jericho at a distance but both want more from the relationship. The personal element of the book is an important thread as Casey’s daughter drives her to search for the runaway girls.
The violence of the murders is quite grisly so readers should beware! The writing is so vivid and realistic that is is easy to imagine the scenarios. The investigation uses the latest technology to help gather clues and solve the case so this made it up to date and relevant.
I found myself almost shouting at the book with frustration as I was convinced I had correctly guessed the murderer. However, the actual resolution of the case was more complex than I had imagined and I enjoyed the twists. Casey still has issues with her daughter and the very end gives hope for future books.

Tears stream down her face as she feels the cold blade press against her neck. The sweet scent of her daughter’s favorite strawberry pancakes all around, her last thought is for her beautiful girl. Please, please let Lisa have escaped.
When Detective Casey White is called early one morning to a beachside vacation campsite in the Outer Banks, she finds the bodies of Carl and Peggy Pearson side-by-side, their throats cut, and their thirteen-year-old daughter Lisa nowhere to be found. Haunted by memories of her own missing girl, Casey fears this could soon become a triple murder: because without the medication found in the bathroom cabinet, Lisa has just days to live.
As her team struggle to untangle the meaning of the cryptic symbol carved into the victims’ skin, Casey searches the area for signs of Lisa: and is rewarded when she finds her blistered and barefoot, staggering along the highway. The girl barely has breath left to whisper ‘he invited me’ before blacking out.
Days later, another couple is found murdered on a vacation yacht. A different symbol is etched on their bodies, and their teenage daughter is also missing. Casey’s only clue is an unsettling ‘invitation’ found on the girl’s phone, to a secluded building out in the cornfields.
Desperate to uncover who is luring these innocent families to their deaths, and certain forensics have missed something vital, Casey matches up the crime scene photos herself. The symbols combine to form an upcoming date. The killer is taunting them with the timing of the next murder.
Racing to follow the invitation in time, when Casey arrives she is shocked to glimpse not the missing girls from this case, but her own missing daughter…
An absolutely addictive mystery thriller that will have you holding your breath until the shocking final twist. Perfect for fans of Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.

One Left Alive, by Helen Phifer

One Left Alive book cover

A wonderful new series from Helen Phifer begins with One Left Alive. Morgan Brookes is a police officer at the start of her career but with her sights set on CID. She is out on her first independent patrol when she gets called to a house with a woman’s body hanging outside. There is no sign of the woman’s family and Morgan has a bad feeling about their wellbeing.
She is seconded to CID ahead of her tutor which causes a rift. However, she develops a friendship with senior officer Ben Matthews who is nursing a broken heart after the suicide of his wife. Morgan also has heartache for her death of her mother and the alcoholism of her father.
The case is completely engaging. The present day case is further complicated by a murdered family in the same house 45 years ago as well as the murder of a newspaper editor. There are plenty of twists which kept my interest from start to finish, with a few jaw dropping moments thrown in!
I really loved this book. Morgan is passionate and determined. Ben is gruff yet vulnerable.  The humanity of the lead detectives is vividly described so we instantly empathise with both. I thought that the way Ben is teaching Morgan was an inspired way for the author to also convey to us the routines and procedures used by police. This gave us more of Morgan’s perspective as we learn alongside her.
There is some romantic tension between Ben and Morgan but the main emphasis is on their professional relationship. There are enjoyable exchanges between the main and peripheral police characters which made them more believable.
One Left Alive was soooo good and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!
Other Helen Phifer books that I have reviewed are: Last Light, The Girl in the Grave, The Girls in the Lake.

She knelt down by the side of the first girl. She had to force herself to breathe as she lifted the soft white cloth covering the girl’s beautiful face…
When the body of a woman is found hanging from a tree in her front garden, rookie Detective Morgan Brookes is first on the scene. But Olivia Potter is past saving. And when her husband and daughters cannot be traced, Morgan knows there is more to this tragedy. And then she finds them. Lying huddled together in the dark basement, each of their faces covered with a small cotton cloth, their bodies cold to the touch.
But as Morgan kneels beside the family, she realises that one of the girls is still breathing. As she holds Bronte’s fragile hand in hers, begging her to hold on, she vows to find out who has done this.
Every day Morgan wakes at 4.25 a.m., her old insomnia now mixed with a new fixation on the case. But every clue about the murdered family leads to a dead end. Until, trawling through old files, she discovers a link to a cold case from years ago. Another family was murdered in this house, and the killer was never caught.
When Morgan returns to the scene of the crime to discover more about this forgotten case, she finds another body. With Bronte still unconscious in hospital, Morgan must act fast to solve this case and lay two families to rest, before the killer returns for the girl left alive…
A chilling and gripping crime thriller that will have fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Patricia Gibney glued to the page.

The Stepdaughter, by Georgina Cross

The Stepdaughter book cover
The house next door is burning down and Vanessa notices that her stepdaughter Mia is missing. Has she run away, been kidnapped or is she in the burning house…?
We begin with the disappearance of Mia and the immediate aftermath of the fire. Then we are taken back in time to the start of Vanessa’s relationship to Tripp and see how their marriage developed. Finally we see what really happened on that day…
The plot is delivered through multiple narrative voices, mainly Vanessa, her neighbour Julia and Julia’s mother Charlotte who has dementia, but also the lead detective and Mia in the final quarter of the book.
As we explored the background relationships, I felt a little angry at Tripp and Mia for taking advantage of Vanessa but understand the complexities of stepfamilies. Equally, I was frustrated with Vanessa for giving up everything for her stepdaughter, yet her compassion for trying to improve the life of a motherless girl is commendable.
The mix of family drama and psychological thriller kept my interest throughout the whole book. Love, grief and jealousy are key themes and all very human so we as readers can identify easily with the main characters.
I liked the way that all the strands were brought together and the disjointed timeline and narrative structure united. There are a limited number of characters in the book so a reduced number of suspects but I felt that the big reveal still had an element of surprise and kept me guessing.
The Stepdaughter is a debut novel from author Gergina Cross which is surprising as it has a confidence that I would associate with more experienced authors. I look forward to more books from this author soon 🙂

Description:

It’s a normal afternoon when I walk out the patio doors of our kitchen to check on Mia, my stepdaughter, who is swimming in our backyard pool. But she’s gone. My heart stops when I see the back gate is open, her pink, fluffy towel lying folded on a chair. I was just feet away. Why didn’t I hear her scream? Who took our little girl?
My husband can’t understand how I could have let his daughter disappear. And when the police come asking questions, I wish I could wind back time to that normal afternoon when I was cooking lasagna for my family, Mia’s favorite. I can tell the officers don’t believe me: they’ve cast me as the evil stepmother.
I just wish I could understand the messages I’ve found from my husband on Mia’s phone: I’m so sorry, I still love you. And why his wedding ring is found at the bottom of the pool after Mia disappeared. He never told me it was missing. What else is he hiding?
But the detective keeps asking me where I was during those ten minutes when Mia vanished. And I can’t tell her my secret. From the way she’s looking at me, I know she thinks I did something to my stepdaughter. Mia and I haven’t always been that close and sometimes she drives me nuts, just like any normal teenager, but I would never hurt her.
I just need you to believe me.
A twisty novel packed with unputdownable suspense about the power and damage of secrets we hide. Perfect for anyone who was totally hooked by The Mother-in-Law, Kerry Fisher and Big Little Lies.

Motive, by Stewart Giles

Motive book cover

DS Smith’s life is back on an even keel after a turbulent year. His wife and daughter have moved back in and they are looking forward to a long Christmas holiday together. But then the phone rings and Smith and Whitton are called back to work for a murder investigation. Two more bodies are discovered and the police are unable to find any connection. DS Smith suspects someone in the team…
Motive is the thirteenth book in Stewart Giles’ Jason Smith series. I have read books 10 and 12 (Severed and Deadeye) and was eager to catch up of the life and love of the lead detective.
The dynamics between the characters is just so good. Smith and Whitton are married with a young daughter so have to negotiate the personal and professional lives. Giles has a way of making you really care about the characters: they have a reality that is refreshing and the dialogue feels natural.
There are also the dynamics of the relationships with other characters, including superior officers, the forensic team and the colleague that Smith had a one night stand with. In Motive, the other characters have an increased significance as Smith believes that one of them is leaking information to the press and could even be the murderer they are searching for.
The plot begins with a murder and, while this is quite graphic, it does not seem gratuitous. Later murders are described in forensic detail but with the added personal reaction of Smith and his team.
The ending was certainly dramatic but didn’t feel very realistic. I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation but felt a little let down with the actual reveal of the culprit. However, the rest of the book is such high quality that it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of Motive and I can’t wait to see what happens next in Smith’s life.

MOTIVE (Detective Jason Smith #13) by Stewart Giles
From # 1 bestselling author, Stewart Giles comes a new detective Harriet Taylor/Jason Smith thriller.
In the week before Christmas, two people are brutally murdered in their homes. There is no sign of a struggle and both victims have had their throats slashed open.
Detective Jason Smith is on holiday for the Christmas period, but he finds himself in the middle of the investigation before he knows it.
There are no clues left at the murder scenes besides a bizarre series of numbers and letters left in random places – E.6.T.0.M. Smith and the team are baffled. What is the relevance of this ambiguous message?
As the bodies start to pile up, and the tensions heat up within the team, Smith soon senses that someone in his team knows more about this than they are letting on. Is there a rat in their midst? And if so, who is it? And why is someone killing people without any obvious motive? In the most bizarre case of Smith’s career, will this be the murderer that finally beats him?

Stewart Giles – Author Bio
After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.
Miranda is something totally different. A stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. This was followed by the sequel Mistress in 2019.  Medusa is coming soon
The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow and there are now 13 books including the introduction: Phobia. Book 12: Deadeye was published in February 2020.

Beyond the Horizon, by Ella Carey

Beyond the Horizon book cover

Eva Scott is desperate to be a pilot during WW2 and undertakes a tough training course before being sent to support the military. In the 1970s, Eva battles with a Congress committee to fight to get the WASPs recognised for their valour and skill.
The character of Eva in Beyond the Horizon is completely engaging. She is brave and dynamic, unwilling to accept the traditional ideals her parents and society expect from her as a young woman. Her dream is to fly, not be a wife and mother.
The lovelorn Eva in the 1940s is a character that many women will identify with. Her heart belongs to Harry but he is in love with the glamorous Lucille. Unrequited love as well as her fears for his safety as he flies on dangerous missions are themes to pull at the emotions and completely relatable and believable.
We know from the start that Eva has had a devastating experience with the death of her co-pilot. She is haunted by the accident as she has amnesia and doesn’t remember the crash. This has led to her becoming estranged from the other women and she has not spoken to them in 30 years.
The sheer rage I felt at the discrimination Eva and the other WASPs faced in both timelines was merged with a guilt at my own lack of knowlegde about these incredible women. I knew about British women pilots delivering planes but their being used as target prctice was a shock. The attitudes of the men in the 1940s and the Congress committee in the 1970s was awful as the brave WASPs were repeatedly treated as second rate.
I really enjoyed reading Beyond the Horizon. It has a little bit of everything (love, history, bravery, adventure, grief) and is well written. In the author’s note at the end, Ella Carey mentions that she was inspired by real anecdotes and I hope this book serves to get the WASPs the recognition they deserve.

Beyond the Horizon book description:
Suddenly, it became hard to breathe and the sound of the engine throbbed in Eva’s head. The plane crashed and skidded. She heard the wail of sirens. The last thing she remembered was pulling her body across the tarmac an inch at a time—before her world went black.
Sweetwater, Texas, 1943Eva has always wanted to fly away. She jumps at the chance to train with the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots and help the war effort, even if the days are exhausting, the southern nights sweltering. When she’s in the air, it’s all worthwhile: her heart soars, as close to infinity as you can get. And since she met handsome Jack, she has someone to fly back to. But on one dangerous night, everything goes wrong. When she awakes, her body is broken and her memory is gone…
Los Angeles, 1977. Eva seems like a normal married woman with a family to be proud of. When she woke up after that terrible night—a blank in her memory—Jack was smiling down at her. But so many decades later, Eva is still searching for answers about the night that changed her life forever. Why have letters to her fellow pilots gone unanswered for thirty years? What really happened on her last flight?
Ever since that catastrophic crash, Eva has lived with the worst fear imaginable: did she do something terrible enough to make her friends cut her off? Increasingly overcome by frightening flashbacks, where she is fighting to escape from a tiny cockpit filled with smoke as her plane falls to the ground, she desperately tries to uncover the truth. But are some secrets best left buried in the past?
From bestselling author Ella Carey comes a sweeping story, inspired by true events, about the brave, forgotten female pilots who helped America win the war. A story you will never forget, and one that will always stay in your heart.
This book was first published in 2019.
