The Hunted Girls, by Jenna Kernan

The Hunted Girls book cover

FBI agent and profiler Nadine Finch is called to assist with a potential serial killer. She has personal experience of murderers, being the daughter of a prolific killer. The bodies start to pile up and Nadine becomes uncomfortably aware that the victims have a connection to her…
The Hunted Girls is a gruesome and grisly serial killer thriller. It is the sequel to A Killer’s Daughter and there are spoilers about outcomes from the last book so I would advise reading them in order.
Nadine Finch has compiled a close knit team around herself, all of whom have killers in the family. She has an edge as a profiler due to her insights and experience but the body count is high. There is a romantic element to the plot as her colleague Clint Demko is ready to take the next step.
The past has a huge impact on the current case and the mentality of both Nadine and the killer. She has put up emotional and mental barriers to try to keep others safe but I admit I did get a little weary of Nadine’s frequent soul searching and rejections of children and a future with Demko. I was frustrated with how she was putting their happiness in jeopardy, always a good sign when you care about the characters!
There was plenty of action, drama and danger to keep the plot engaging and exciting. There are descriptions of the killer’s attacks and the forensic details of the bodies which is a bit stomach churning: is it weird to find it fascinating?!
The Hunted Girls has a strong plot and likeable lead characters facing graphic and disturbing murders. The ending wraps up the case but leaves Nadine facing change…

The Hunted Girls book description:
Stumbling through the pitch-black forest, twigs scratching her bare feet, she sobs as she imagines her children crying for their mommy to put them to bed. By now everyone will know she is missing. Please, please let me find the way home. Before he comes back.
As Agent Nadine Finch rushes to investigate the murder of newlywed Nikki Darnell in Ocala National Forest, Florida, fear floods her body. She swore she’d never set foot here again, not since the case fifteen years ago which tore her life apart. But taking in the triangular cuts scarring Nikki’s perfect pale skin, she knows she must put her own traumatic past aside to find justice for Nikki’s inconsolable husband.
Discovering water in Nikki’s lungs, and certain the triangular wounds were made by arrowheads, Nadine must convince her team of her terrifying theory: that Nikki was hunted down and drowned before being left for them to find. But what monster would do such a thing? And why? Then another woman, a mother of two, is discovered in the woods, tell-tale arrow marks all over her body.
Recognizing the victim as a local waitress, Nadine fears the killer has started attacking women known to her. And the moment she traces the arrow heads to a nearby outdoors store, her own partner disappears.
Frantic, Nadine follows the trail to a lonely cabin deep in the Florida wetlands where she finally learns the heart-stopping truth. To save one of her own, she must confront a deadly hunter obsessed with the case that’s haunted her whole career. Will Nadine have to make the ultimate sacrifice to stop him taking more innocent lives?
Jaw-dropping, packed with twists and turns, and impossible to put down until you reach the final page. Fans of Robert Dugoni, Lisa Gardner and Rachel Caine will be totally addicted to The Hunted Girls.

The Secretary, by Catherine Hokin

The Secretary book cover

1930s and 40s Berlin. Magda is horrified by the Nazi rise to power but uses her position as secretary to Himmler to obtain information. 1980s East Berlin: Magda’s granddaughter Nina struggles to comply with the oppressive nature of life. She yearns for freedom but uncovers family secrets at the same time…
The Secretary is an emotive and fascinating dual timeline novel. It features two generations of the same family living through dangerous times when they seek to challenge the ideologies in power.
I was interested in Nina’s timeline as I know very little about life under regime of the GDR (East Germany). I do remember the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 but was unaware of the significance. However, Magda’s timeline was much more familiar to me and was captivating in a haunting way due to the atrocities she is witness to.
The contrast and comparison between the 1940s and 1980s is impressive. Two regimes of oppression and control. Violence and brutality, secret systems of crime and punishment. Both timelines had been well researched to allow the author to bring them to life.
The two main women are brave and determined, unhappy to sit back and accept the regime in power. Both women are also driven by love but this takes a less prominent role in the narrative. The personal relationships of Magda have greater impact on events in the book and I did feel like her character was more developed.
The Secretary was a fascinating historical novel but not for the fainthearted due to the emotional and threatening historical content. I have previously reviewed What Only We Know and The Lost Mother by Catherine Hokin.

Book Description:
The Tower House. Down a secluded path, hidden by overgrown vines, the crumbling villa echoes with memories. Of the family who laughed and sang there, until the Nazis tore them from their home. And of the next woman to walk its empty rooms, whose courage in the face of evil could alter the course of history…
Germany 1940. As secretary to the leader of the SS, Magda spends her days sending party invitations to high-ranking Nazis, and her evenings distributing pamphlets for the resistance. But Magda is leading a dangerous double life, smuggling secrets out of the office. It’s a deadly game, and eventual exposure is a certainty, but Magda is driven by a need to keep the man she secretly loves safe as he fights against the Nazis…
Forty years later. Nina’s heart pounds as she steps into an uncertain future carrying a forged passport, a few bank notes, and a scribbled address for The Tower House taken from an intricate drawing she found hidden in her grandmother’s wardrobe. Separated from her family and betrayed by her country, Nina’s last hope is to trace her family’s history in the ruins of the past her grandmother ran from. But, when she finally finds the abandoned house, she opens the door to a forgotten story, and to secrets which will change everything: past, present, and future…
A poignant and gripping novel about bravery, loss and redemption during the Second World War. An unputdownable read for fans of The Tattooist of AuschwitzWe Were the Lucky Ones and The Alice Network.

The Frozen Girl, by Roberta Gately

The Frozen Girl book cover

Jessie Novak is an ER nurse working in liaison with the police. A body is found with a link to the hospital and Jessie is determined to find the killer but uncovers a host of personal and professional secrets along the way…
The Frozen Girl is the second book to feature Jessie but it is the first that I have read. There are no spoilers about events in the last book.
I loved the beginning of the book with the garbled and hesitant 911 call. As someone who has never needed to call emergency services, this felt very realistic! We then get into a dramatic scene in the emergency room where Jessie shines, and then the murder takes priority. There is some forensic detail of the autopsy but it is objective rather than grisly.
Jessie had an antagonistic relationship with the victim but is shocked to find herself a suspect as well as investigating the case. She is also uncertain in her new role liaising with the police, especially as the lead officer is giving her mixed signals.
Jessie also has issues in her private life in the form of her mother who turns up after abandoning her as a child. This, combined with the romantic tension, adds a more emotional tone to the book and makes her more engaging as a character.
The murder case itself is dominated by the hunt for the killer and the danger to Jessie which ensues. Evidence seems to point in one direction but Jessie is adamant that the police are being misdirected by the real killer.
The Frozen Girl is an engaging police thriller with a personable lead character, and I’ll be off to search out the first book in the series!

Description:
The young woman’s mouth is slightly parted, as if waiting to speak. Her body is frozen in ice and her blue eyes stare at the sky, perhaps wanting to look at the stars one last time…
When the body of a woman is found in the frozen Neponset River, just where it meets the sea, Jessie Novak and her partner Detective Sam Dallas rush to the scene. When Jessie sees a flash of a familiar silk scarf, she’s shocked to realize the girl in the ice is Sheila Logan, who she worked closely with for years at Boston City Hospital. Jessie desperately wants to find out how this young and talented nurse ended up an innocent victim.
But who would want to kill her? As she digs into Sheila’s past, Jessie realizes she was having an affair with a colleague and may even have been pregnant. Was her lover unwilling to be a father to her child? The pain of Sheila’s death threatens to tear open Jessie’s old wounds—Jessie’s own mother walked out on her when she was just a baby and never looked back. She can’t change her own past, but she’s determined to get justice for Sheila.
When Sheila’s neighbor is found dead, also wearing a distinctive scarf, Jessie sees a lethal pattern forming. Next, someone breaks into Jessie’s car and she knows she’s being warned off the case. But with the killer in her sights, will she take the deadliest risk of her life? Can Jessie catch him, before he catches up to her?
This utterly addictive novel will keep you up all night! Fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Abbott and Tess Gerritsen will be totally hooked until the last heart-thumping page.

This Other Island, by Steffanie Edward

This Other Island book cover

Joe Francis is randomly attacked in the street leading to a multitude of revelations for him and his family. In particular, his daughter Yvette has a great deal to cope with as secrets are uncovered thick and fast…
This Other Island is the debut novel from Steffanie Edward, yet has the confidence of a more experienced author. The dialogue really brings the plot and characters to life and gives them an authenticity. The use of the West Indian dialect helps with the visualisation and characterisation of the older generation.
Yvette has a complicated relationship with her estranged parents, loving them both but upset by their separation. They married shortly after they arrived from St Lucia but now Yvette acts as a go between. Deeply emotional revelations lead Yvette to search for information about their journey but secrets are well hidden and shock the family to the core as they are discovered.
The book’s plot is delivered in the first person from multiple perspectives, in particular Yvette and her mother Doli. Yvette feels like she is in a dead end relationship and wants the secure family life she has always craved. Although Yvette is undoubtedly the lead character, her mother has a prominent part: she has a second chance at happiness and it is enjoyable to see an older person’s viewpoint.
This Other Island is an emotional journey about the Windrush generation and their descendents. It has strong themes of personal, ethnic and national identity as well as being a study in the nuances of family relationships.

This Other Island book description:
Things between me and Papa are so different to what me and Mum have. It’s been that way since the first day. An invisible bond. Papa was the one who never stopped encouraging me to strive for my goals. ‘Take every opportunity dis country give you, ich mwen,’ he’d always said…
When Yvette receives a call to say her estranged father Joe has been attacked in a seemingly random act of violence, she rushes to his side. She’d stayed with her mother after her parents separated, but never forgot her father’s kind and caring ways. Memories of his wide smile and loving embraces – so different to her mother Doli – have always sustained her.
But when she arrives, ready to make peace and help him in any way she can, she finds a man different to the larger-than-life father she remembers. Joe is fighting for his life, but is also haunted by memories of his past. He begs Yvette to help him find out the truth…
About the journey that brought him and a beautiful young woman called Doli together, as they both travelled – as part of the Windrush Generation, to start new lives in Britain. About the lives they left behind in St Lucia. And about a dark secret – one that he has carried with him since stepping off the ship that wet and chilly August day. That threatened his and Doli’s marriage from the very beginning…
Only Yvette can find out what really happened on that crossing. Because, for forty years, Joe has believed that he killed a man. A man who had had feelings for Doli too. And who – as Joe knows – might hold the key to Yvette’s own story…
What follows is a heart-stopping debut novel about family, identity, secrets, lies, and the journeys that define us. It will grip you, challenge you, and ultimately break you into a thousand pieces. Perfect for fans of Small Island and Girl, Woman, Other.
Author Bio:
Steffanie Edward was born in St Lucia, brought up in London and now straddles between the two.
Anancy, Crick-crick and other Caribbean folk stories have been a part of her life since childhood. In her late teens she enjoyed reading Susan Howatch and books on slavery. Her absolute favourite reads have been Wild Seed by Octavia E Bulter, and Woman At Point Zero by Naawal El Saadawi.
Steffanie’s writing career started with short stories, five of which have been published. Her first attempt at writing a novel was over twenty years ago, whilst living and working in Abu Dhabi. That novel, Yvette, didn’t make it into print, but the main protagonist, Yvette, has muscled her way into Steffanie’s debut novel, This Other Island.

The Marriage, by K.L. Slater

The Marriage book cover

A fatal punch in 2009 between two best friends changes their families’ lives forever. Jesse dies while Tom goes to prison for his manslaughter. Now in 2019, Tom and Jesse’s mother Bridget have found love and marry but face the disbelief and rejection of their families. Tom’s mother Jill believes Bridget only wants revenge…
The Marriage is a compelling psychological thriller. Two families have been torn apart by the events of a decade ago but nothing prepares them for the upheaval in the present day. I was instantly distrustful of the marriage between Bridget and Tom but it soon becomes apparent that there are other secrets.
The majority of the book is shown through the first person perspectives of Bridget and Jill but there are other chapters in the third person viewpoint of Tom and police officers in the past and present.
Bridget and Jill used to have a strong friendship but the death of Jesse drove them apart. Now they are forced even further apart as they battle for Tom’s affections. Using their first person perspectives, it was easy to see both sides of the situation as well as Tom stuck in the middle. Bridget has been through the devastation of losing a child while Jill lost hers in a different way. Both women had hopes and dreams through their children that will never be fulfilled.
The Marriage was hugely enjoyable and entertaining. The dilemma facing the families was dramatic and engaging, and I could imagine the plot premise appearing in the tabloid papers! It was clear that a twist was on its way and I guessed a character involved in but the actual reveal was surprising.
I have previously read other psychological thrillers from K.L. Slater: The Girl She Wanted, Little Whispers, Single and Finding Grace.

The Marriage book description:
Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him.
Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere.
But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.
The man who killed my son.
My friends and family can’t understand it. My neighbours whisper in the street whenever I walk past. How can I love a man like Tom?
They don’t really know me at all…
The most unputdownable psychological thriller you’ll read this year from the bestselling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Wife Between Us or Gone Girl, you’ll be totally hooked on The Marriage.
