Local Girl Missing, by Lisa Regan

Local Girl Missing book coverJosie and Noah are heading back from their honeymoon when they see a teenaged girl running across the road. They pull over and find another girl being murdered. The perpetrator runs away so the detectives are hunting for the missing teen and her attacker…
Local Girl Missing is the 15th book to feature Josie Quinn, her new husband and colleague Noah, and the rest of their police department.
The majority of the book is set in the present day and focuses on Josie and the investigation. However there are some chapters showing a little girl’s experiences growing up. Gradually we get clues as to how this connects to the case.
Josie is thoroughly frustrated with the lack of cooperation from the missing girl and her attacker. Both are keeping secrets, fearful for their lives, but this only serves to prevent Jodie and her team from making any progress in the case.
The pace of plot developments is fast and furious as always. There is plenty of drama and fans of the series will enjoy how Josie and Noah throw themselves into danger. Now there is an extra tension as they are married so need to keep their personal feelings separate whilst they fulfil their professional roles.
Local Girl Missing is a solid addition to the series and I look forward to the next book.

On a winding mountain road into the small town of Denton, Pennsylvania, Detective Josie Quinn finds the body of a local teenage girl, Dina Hale. The Roommate, by Caroline Macon Fleischer

The Roommate book cover

Donna inherits her grandmother’s house but soon decides to find a roommate. Joshua seems perfect but their friendship gradually deteriorates as tension and danger take over the house…
The Roommate is a domestic drama and psychological thriller set in America.
I have really mixed feelings about this book. The characters are not easy to like or identify with. The plot has twists which were easily predicted. Yet the book was completely compelling.
The tension is palpable throughout and this draws the readers’ anticipation as they await to see what will happen next. The atmosphere is at best deeply uncomfortable, but also dark and dangerous. I felt that the unpredictable behaviour and volatile nature of the characters and plot are reinforced through the writing.
There was jarring moments, some softer times and other outright unpleasant scenes. I felt that some moments stood out as really awkward and stretched my credulity: references to sex and a period starting suddenly which both seemed irrelevant. Some parts of the book, especially the ending, are quite gruesome.
Donna creates her own problems but I couldn’t bring myself to like her due the way she takes others for granted. Both roommates have a skewed psychology which makes them complex and nuanced. However, the relationship between Donna and Joshua is fascinating as their roles in the house develop. They really have a love-hate relationship despite the way they treat each other.
The Roommate is an unpleasantly dark but compelling novel.

THE ROOMMATE by Caroline Macon Fleischer
SHE INVITED HIM IN, NOW SHE CAN’T GET HIM OUT . . .
The most addictive psychological thriller you’ll read this summer.
Donna inherits a house in California and she’s ready to start a new life. But the nightmare has only just begun.
It’s almost impossible to wrap her brain around the fact that this place is hers. A gift she never expected but it’s come just when she needs it most. Donna was wondering where her life was going — a dead-end job in Chicago, an unhappy family life, no boyfriend. But inheriting a beautiful, blue-painted house from her grandmother in California offers a fresh start.
And now she’s found the perfect roommate to help her pay the bills. Joshua keeps the fridge stocked with delicious fresh food. They watch cooking shows together and stay up watching late-night movies. He’s not just a roommate, he’s a friend, and soon Donna can’t imagine life without him.
But Donna tries to ignore the doubts she begins to have. Why does he have a key to the side door? And what’s that smell coming from his room?
And when Donna brings home her new boyfriend, things start to spiral out of control.
How far will he go . . . ?
A dark and twisty psychological thriller with an ending you won’t forget. Fans of Shari Lapena, Becca Day, Patricia MacDonald, Freida McFadden, Nicole Trope and Susanna Beard will not be able to put this book down.
WHAT EVERYONE IS SAYING ABOUT THE ROOMMATE:
Dark, propulsive, and thrillingly unpredictable, The Roommate is a moody mind-bender of Southern California noir. Echoing James Ellroy and Michael Connelly, Macon Fleischer skilfully brings to life a cast of characters rife with damaged psyches, revenge cravings, and violent tendencies, while never losing sight of their fundamental desire for human connection.” Cassidy Lucas, author of Santa Monica and The Last Party
Relentlessly tense and unsettling, The Roommate is a novel as dark as it is addictive. It will stay with you long after you finish — and will make you think twice about welcoming strangers into your home.” Megan Collins, author of The Family Plot
“If Caroline Kepnes, Joan Didion, and Ottessa Moshfegh’s books had a hilarious, nail-bitingly tense, uncomfortably clear-sighted baby, the result would be Caroline Macon Fleischer’s addicting debut. The Roommate is like nothing I’ve read before. I could not put it down.” Julia Fine, author of The Upstairs House

Take A Chance On Greece, by Sue Roberts

Take A Chance On Greece book cover
Orla reassesses her life after being treated for a brain tumour. She makes a surprise discovery at her dad’s house as she recuperates and heads to Greece. Whilst soaking up the sun and culture, she considers her life choices.
Take A Chance On Greece is a warm and uplifting summer read. However it also has an important message about being brave enough to take chances with whatever life throws at you.
Orla travels to Greece on a mission but also determined to make the most of life’s opportunities. She has never had much luck in the romance department but finds herself making positive relationships with a number of men: will one of them capture her heart…? There are multiple possibilities for finding love but Orla needs to focus on herself first. I had no idea which of the lovely men she meets would be the one to give her a happy ending.
There is also the subplot of finding out what she discovered at her dad’s house. Again, Orla has to face her fears and be brave in order to make improvements to her life and relationships. This element to the plot develops slowly over the course of the book to increase our understanding of Orla’s hesitant personality.
The style of writing is rich with description especially of the scenery and food. This brings the location and atmosphere to life and makes me want to visit Greece!
Take A Chance On Greece is an enjoyable and gentle, romantic, life affirming novel.
I have previously reviewed A Very French AffairAs Greek As It GetsGreece Actually, Going Greek, What Happens In Greece by Sue Roberts.

Book Description:
Forgetting your troubles surrounded by golden sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and chiselled abs… what could possibly go wrong?
For Orla, moving in with her dad at twenty-nine after a health scare wasn’t exactly her plan. Neither was finding out he’s been keeping a huge family secret…
Ready to put the entire Mediterranean Sea between herself and her dysfunctional family, she packs her bags and checks in to a charming B&B on a sun-drenched Greek island. But the vines climbing the beautiful yellow front and the glittering blue sea aren’t the only gorgeous things in view. Her neighbour, sexy writer Georgios, is in search of inspiration, and Orla’s caught his eye… if only he would lighten up!
It’s a big fat Greek clash of wills as Orla encourages Georgios to put down his pen and start having fun. Who wouldn’t love a cruise on a pirate ship, complete with rum and fake swords? Her heart melts as she catches a glimmer of a smile… but over Greek wine and freshly made mezze by candlelight, he gets far too serious, urging Orla to talk about her past. However, as soon as Orla shares her secrets, Georgios abruptly ends the evening…
The next day, confused and angry, Orla heads to the harbour to leave the island. But something makes her hesitate. Should she get on the boat and keep running from her problems, or break free from her past and let her glorious Greek summer last forever?
A completely feel-good read about living life to the full! Perfect for fans of Carole Matthews, Jenny Colgan and Sophie Kinsella.
Author Bio:
Sue Roberts lives in Lancashire with her long term partner Derek and has had a lifelong love of writing, encouraged by winning a school writing competition at the age of 11.
She always assumed that ‘one day’ she would write a book, always having a busy household and a job, the idea remained firmly on the back burner but never forgotten.
The inspiration for her first novel came to her on a holiday to a Greek village. Her daughters had left home and suddenly the time had come to write that book!

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge, by Leslie Wolfe

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge book cover

A teenage girl Jenna is found dead with terrible sexual assault injuries that she endured prior to her murder. Former FBI profiler Kay Sharp is determined to catch the killer but the investigation leads her to review her own family history…
The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is the 4th book to feature Detective Kay Sharp. It would work as a stand alone novel and there are no spoilers about previous cases.
Kay is greatly affected by this case as the victim is so young. There is plenty of evidence and the pathology and police departments are kept busy. They find evidence of date rape drugs and a disturbing website that could have been responsible for a significant personality change in the victim over the months before her death.
Then there is the added dimension of the link to her past which she tried to keep quiet and this distances her from her partner Elliot. The pair are both denying their feelings for each other so this further delays any advances to their relationship. Kay’s past is not resolved in this book leaving potential for further developments in later books.
The book is written in the third person throughout. The opening chapter shows the victim’s final moments but the majority is the police perspective. There are also some viewpoints from Jenna’s friends and other teens which raise suspicions about the background of the case..
The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is a crime thriller full of emotion. I have previously reviewed the first books in the series: The Girl From Silent Lake, Beneath Blackwater River, and The Angel Creek Girls.

Description:
Her face, beautiful even in death, gazed open-eyed at the azure sky. Brown, silky hair fanned around her head, bringing out the pallor of her skin. Her lips were slightly parted as if she was still breathing, as if she was whispering her goodbyes.
On a hot summer’s day, the sleepy town of Mount Chester is thrown into turmoil when seventeen-year-old local girl Jenna goes missing. Within hours, the case takes an agonizing turn when her body is discovered in the isolated mountains.
Detective Kay Sharp rushes to the scene, hiking for miles to the base of Wildfire Ridge. From the markings on Jenna’s body, it’s clear that she was brutally murdered. Near the victim, Kay finds a butterfly-shaped hair clip with a set of fingerprints that could be a vital clue.
In the hunt for the truth, Kay turns the small town upside down. She learns that Jenna changed dramatically over the past months, no longer the popular girl who always wore a smile on her face. Kay is certain whatever happened to Jenna recently must be the key to her death.
When forensics from the butterfly hair clip comes back, the fingerprints don’t match Jenna’s. Then Kay makes a breakthrough that turns her blood to ice. Jenna was in contact with someone linked to Kay’s own past—and the secret she has spent the last sixteen years burying. If the truth comes out, it could destroy her.
With the clock ticking, and every minute critical, Kay is up against the toughest case of her career. Can she risk everything to confront the past she has been running from, and save another innocent girl before it’s too late?
Thrillers don’t get more addictive than this! You’ll race through this gripping page-turner, your heart pounding, as you’re hit with twist after twist. Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Caine.

Unjust Bias, by Liz Mistry

Unjust Bias book cover
A young man is found dead but his family have rejected him. DI Gus McGuire is determined to show respect and care for the dead man through finding justice for his killer.
Unjust Bias is the 8th police procedural novel to feature Gus and his team. It is the first book that I have read by this author and the police characters are already firmly established. However, I feel that it works as a stand alone book.
Some chapters are written from first person perspectives which suggest a killer and victim’s viewpoints. The majority is written in the third person to show the police investigation and an undercover group with a mission. There is an unpleasant and dark tone to the book as it involves the dark web.
The issues surrounding the death are hinted at during the first third of the book before becoming explored further and more overtly. Conversion therapy and cruel attitudes to non conformity to sexual and gender stereotypes are handled in a sensitive way but are upsetting and shocking.
Gus is a good lead detective. He genuinely cares about justice for all and is determined to catch the killer. His emotional softer side is evident as he cares for the victims as well as in his personal relationships with family and colleagues.
Unjust Bias is an enjoyable police procedural novel and I would like to catch up on the earlier books.

Unjust Bias
A murdered boy disowned by his family.
A teen terrified his past will catch up with him.
A girl with nowhere to go.
Men with rage so visceral they will do anything.
With the unsolved murder of a homeless boy still preying on his mind, DI Gus McGuire is confronted with a similar murder, a missing teen and no clues.
Does the answer lie with an illegal dark web site where ‘slaves’ are auctioned off? Or with an online forum for teens?
How can Gus keep people safe when unjust bias rears its head and being different could cost you your life…?

Author Bio –
Born in Scotland, Made in Bradford sums up Liz Mistry’s life. Over thirty years ago she moved from a small village in West Lothian to Yorkshire to get her teaching degree. Once here, Liz fell in love with three things; curries, the rich cultural diversity of the city … and her Indian husband (not necessarily in this order). Now thirty years, three children, two cats and a huge extended family later, Liz uses her experiences of living and working in the inner city to flavour her writing. Her gritty crime fiction police procedural novels set in Bradford embrace the city she describes as ‘Warm, Rich and Fearless’ whilst exploring the darkness that lurks beneath.
Struggling with severe clinical depression and anxiety for a large number of years, Liz often includes mental health themes in her writing. She credits the MA in Creative Writing she took at Leeds Trinity University with helping her find a way of using her writing to navigate her ongoing mental health struggles. Being a debut novelist in her fifties was something Liz had only dreamed of and she counts herself lucky, whilst pinching herself regularly to make sure it’s all real. One of the nicest things about being a published author is chatting with and responding to readers’ feedback and Liz regularly does events at local libraries, universities, literature festivals and open mics. She also teaches creative writing too. Liz has completed a PhD in Creative Writing on Diverse voices in crime fiction
In her spare time, Liz loves pub quizzes (although she admits to being rubbish at them), dancing (she does a mean jig to Proud Mary – her opinion, not ratified by her family), visiting the varied Yorkshire landscape, with Robin Hoods Bay being one of her favourite coastal destinations, listening to music, reading and blogging about all things crime fiction on her blog, The Crime Warp.
