The Safe Place, by L.A. Larkin

The Safe Place book cover
Jessie is an outcast after accusing her ex of being violent. Ruth is new in town and feels isolated. The town of Eagle Falls is also home to a dangerous arsonist with murder in mind…
The Safe Place is a crime thriller centred around arson and murder. It is a stand alone novel and I have previously reviewed Widow’s Island by L.A. Larkin.
Jessie and Ruth are great characters whose confidence has taken a knock. Both are struggling to fit in with the neighbourhood and feel the whole town is against them. I found that I liked both women and wanted them to be given a fair chance. I even felt angry at the prejudice against them whilst they have both been through so much trauma in their pasts.
Wildfires are endangering the local area but also a killer is on the loose. I found the chapters from his perspective to be quite chilling as he deliberately targets homes to set alight, having first prevented any means of escape. The tension and dread was built up well (perhaps like a fire spreading?!) through the chapters giving his perspective.
I felt that the setting was authentic and the landscape played an important role in the novel. The writing is engaging and the plot is delivered at a fast pace. However, for me it was the two main characters that made this book so enjoyable. Their vulnerability is eclipsed by an inner strength that keeps them motivated in the face of an oppressive community and an evil killer.
The Safe Place is an entertaining crime thriller that had me hooked.

About the Book:
Her heart pounds at the sound of footsteps outside her cabin in the woods. The snap of a twig tells her someone is close by. As she treads lightly towards the back door, she says a silent prayer—don’t let him find me…
Ever since Jessie Lewis reported her boyfriend, fire chief and local hero, for beating her, she’s been an outcast from the small town of Eagle Falls. And when someone sets fire to a house in the woods, killing the entire Troyer family, the locals turn on her again, taking her very public argument with Paul Troyer as proof that she lit the match.
Devastated that anyone could think her capable of murder, Jessie turns to Ruth. New in town, and an ex-FBI agent, Ruth could be the exact person Jessie needs to smoke out the murderer. But can she trust her with her life?
Days later, another house linked to Jessie is set ablaze. Combing the ashes for answers, she catches sight of an inscription she hasn’t seen since her childhood—since she lost someone very close to her. Is the killer is coming for her next?
As local wildfires take hold of the town and everyone is evacuated, Jessie knows she must put herself in unthinkable danger to catch the killer. And when she does, will she have the strength to take them down first?
From USA Today bestselling crime author L.A. Larkin, The Safe Place is a thrilling rollercoaster ride for fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Kendra Elliot. You will not be able to put this down!

The Girl Across The Sea, by Noelle Harrison

The Girl Across The Sea book cover
1933, Ellen abandons her husband and daughter rather than return to Ireland with them but is haunted by her decision. 1984, recently separated Mairead has always felt unloved by her mother.  Brigid’s cancer diagnosis forces her to reach out to her daughter to beg her to find her birth mother Ellen.
The Girl Across The Sea is a dual timeline novel set in the 1930s and 1980s, in America and Ireland.
Ellen is terrified at the thought of returning home to Ireland and in her desperation she runs away from the ship. Her husband and daughter sail on without her and she has nothing except a green suitcase. What could she possibly have done that would make this seem like the only choice?
Mairead is going through a tricky patch. Her husband has left her for a man, her daughter is trying to break into acting and her mother continually rejects her. Now she faces the loss of her mother and her desperate pleas to find her biological grandmother.
The chapters alternate between the third person viewpoints of Ellen and Mairead. Both timelines are very emotional and full of mystery as secrets are gradually revealed. The tension between Mairead and Brigid is heartbreaking and uncomfortable even when we understand the reason. Meanwhile Ellen endures so much which is even more emotional after the grief of separation from her child.
The Irish and American landscapes are brought to life as well as the two historical eras. The poverty of the 1930s and the burgeoning technology in the 1980s were detailed enough to give an authenticity.
The Girl Across The Sea is an interesting and engaging historical dual timeline novel. I have previusly reviewed The Island Girls by Noelle Harrison.

About the Book:
Ellen looked into her daughter’s green eyes. Her chest felt tight, and her heart was cracking. If only she could be sure her secret was safe. If only she could go home to Ireland…
New York, 1933. Ellen looks at her sleeping husband and precious daughter for the last time. They have longed to return home to Ireland for many years, but now the time has come, and the boat is ready to leave. But Ellen knows the dark secret she hides means she can never go back. Heart breaking into a million little pieces, she kisses her little girl goodbye and lays a precious turquoise necklace down beside her head, before fleeing into the night.
Ireland, years later. Mairead’s world is falling apart. Recently separated, she has returned home to nurse her dying mother, Brigid. As Brigid passes, she calls out for her mother, Ellen, a woman Mairead knows nothing about.
All alone in the world, Mairead is stricken with guilt that she couldn’t honour her mother’s last wish. She travels to New York, the last place her grandmother was seen, clutching all that she has of her – a stunning turquoise necklace and a small black-and-white photograph. Mairead’s search leads her across America to Arizona where she discovers that Ellen was on the run, a wanted woman, accused of a terrible crime.
Mairead can’t believe that the young woman with laughing eyes and an innocent smile could have such a dark past. But as she uncovers the secrets and lies that forced her grandmother to abandon her only daughter, will Mairead’s own future be ruined by the shadows of her family’s secrets?
Be transported to the wild west coast of Ireland by this beautiful read about the sacrifices a mother will make to protect her child. Fans of The Light Between Oceans and Lisa Wingate will adore this heart-breaking book.

5 top reasons to go vegan! And HOW to go vegan now!

November is World Vegan Month so I thought I would share some thoughts about my own vegan journey since January 2019.

Why try veganism?
You like animals
Life is precious whatever the species. Humans have no right to control, breed and enslave other animals. We do have a responsibility to protect our world and its inhabitants.
You don’t like animals.
Yep, it might sound strange but this resonates with me. I have phobias about mulitple animals. I don’t hate animals, I just don’t want them near me whether alive or dead. To be fair, they probably don’t want to be near me either!
Climate
Farming animals for meat and dairy is catastrophic for our planet.
Personal health
Meat is high in fat and can lead to many lllnesses including heart disease and high blood pressure. Time to take care of yourself: It is ok to be selfish when it also benefits others!
Going vegan doesn’t have to be 100%. Every reduction makes a huge difference to you, animals and the planet.
Start small if you have to. One meal a week or one day a week to begin with.
I had been vegetarian for almost 20 years when I decided to go vegan. As a mother myself, I decided that the enforced pregnancy and subsequent separation of cows from their calves was not acceptable. The conditions of hen bred for their eggs and the treatment of non useful birds is horrific.
I have previously criticised sanctimonious vegans for epousing their superitority and I stand by my comments. Being a vegan does not make you a good person. However, it can make a very real difference in terms of future animals that will be saved through consumer power.
My children are not even vegetarian , let alone vegan. I can guide my children but not contol them. My job as a parent is to give them the information to make their own choices.
Recipe ideas: I have a several recipes on my blog that are usually quick and easy to make! Perfect for busy families and easy to adapt with seasoning and spices to suit every palate.

Vegan feta pasta
Vegan drop pancakes
Vegan roasted tofu
Vegan mushroom risotto
Vegan syrup sponge
and many more (take a look in the vegan or recipe categories in the sidebar…)

Never Fall For Your Fiancee, by Virginia Heath

Never Fall For Your Fiancee boook cover

1825 and Hugh Standish has been living a lie. He has told his mother he is engaged and now she is on her way from America to meet his non-existent betrothed. A chance encounter in the street with a financially desperate young woman, Minerva Merriwell, gives Hugh the idea to pay her to pretend to be his fiancee…
Never Fall For Your Fiancee is an historical romance set in England in the Regency period. I found myself immediately immersed in the period and hugely enjoyed the gentle comedy and light hearted romance as it develops.
Hugh’s situation and his rapport with his incredulous best friend Giles immediately makes him likeable. He has got himself into rather a pickle with a series of elaborate lies and is worried that he is about to be found out. He has lied to his mother but doesn’t want to hurt to disappoint her.
We are then introduced to Minerva and her two sisters who she is supporting through her art work after their father abandoned them. Diana and Vee are not at all keen on this fiancee scheme but don’t realise the severity of their financial situation as Minerva protects them. I liked the light hearted banter with butler Payne as he offers a servant’s wise intepretation of high society life as Minerva struggles to play the part.
I loved the immediate attraction between the main pair which they are anxious to keep hidden. This maintained my interest in the plot as I waited with baited breath to see if Hugh’s mother would be fooled. The couple are equally determined not to give in to their emotions due to their family history. Hugh doesn’t want to disappoint a wife by cheating like his father while Minerva has learned to rely on herself alone.
Never Fall For Your Fiancee is an entertaining and light hearted historical romance novel and I really enjoyed it the gentle comedy.

Never Fall for Your Fiancée
The trouble with lies is they have a tendency to catch a man out.

The last thing Hugh Standish, Earl of Fareham, wants is a wife.
But since the only way to keep his mother’s matchmaking ways at bay is the promise of impending nuptials, Hugh takes the most logical action: he invents a fake fiancée.
It’s the perfect plan – until Hugh learns that his mother is on a ship bound for England to meet his ‘beloved’. He needs a solution fast, and when he collides with a mysterious beauty, he might just have found the answer to his prayers.
Minerva Merriwell is desperate for money to support her sisters, and although she knows that posing as the Earl’s fiancée might seem nonsensical, it’s just too good an offer to refuse.
As the Merriwells descend upon Hugh’s estate, the household is thrown into turmoil as everyone tries to keep their tangled stories straight. And with Hugh and Minerva’s romantic ruse turning into the real thing, is true love just one complication too many?
‘Filled with fabulously British banter, wit, and heart, this delightful book is one of my must-read rom-coms of the year’

A Letter From Pearl Harbor, by Anna Stuart

A Letter From Pearl Harbour book cover

1941 Ginny is a pilot in Hawaii but the Japanese are approaching… 2019 Ginny sets a treasure hunt for her granddaughters as her dying wish, trying to repair their fragile relationship while teaching them about her past.
A Letter From Pearl Harbor is a dual timeline novel set during the Second World War and the modern day.
Robyn lives and works in Hawaii, unaware of her grandmother’s history there. After Ginny’s death, she returns with her sister Ashleigh. They have a prickly relationship after Ash suffered a catastrophic injury while forced her to be in a wheelchair. Ash thinks Rob is wasting her life and opportunitites. Meanwhile Rob thinks her sister needs to make the most of her potential, wheelchair or not.
Granny Ginny wanted to reconcile the girls so created a treasure hunt from her deathbed. Together they travel around Hawaii to the places that Ginny loved. We then see flashbacks to events in the past as Ginny works as a female pilot as war looms. There is an added poignancy to the plot as real historical figures intermingle with the fictional ones.
I enjoyed the mystery element to the treasure hunt and the journey of discovery and self discovery that the sisters go on. Around a third of the way through, Ginny describes herself in a letter as a coward. This raised my anticipation as I tried to reconcile that image of her with how she is represented in the past and present so far. She lived with a secret for decades…
A Letter From Pearl Harbor is a wonderful tale of loss and change, grief and gratitude. I have previously reviewed The Secret Diary and The Berlin Zookeeper by Anna Stuart.

Ninety-eight-year-old Ginny McAllister’s last wish is for her granddaughter to complete a treasure hunt containing clues to her past. Clues that reveal her life as one of the first female pilots at Pearl Harbor, and a devastating World War Two secret.

She recognises the red symbol of the Japanese fighter planes almost too late. Somehow, she manages to land unscathed but the choices she is forced to make in the terrible hours that follow have tragic consequences…
2019, Pearl Harbor: Heartbroken Robyn Harris is reeling from the death of the strong, determined grandmother who raised her. Her only comfort is a letter written in Ginny’s distinctive hand which details a treasure hunt, just like the ones she used to set for her as a little girl. Except this time, the clues are scattered across the beautiful island of Hawaii. Despite her grief, Robyn finds herself intrigued as she follows the trail of letters, revealing the truth about Ginny’s service during the Second World War.
But Robyn’s whole world is turned upside down when she’s faced with a shocking secret which has the power to change the course of her own life…
Inspired by true events, this is a heartbreaking and unforgettable WW2 novel about love, loss and bravery. Perfect for fans of The Alice Network, The Nightingale and Kathryn Hughes.
author Anna Stuart
Author Bio:
Anna Stuart lives in Derbyshire with her campervan-mad husband, two hungry teenagers and a slightly loopy dog. She was hooked on books from the moment she first opened one in her cot so is thrilled to now have several of her own to her name. Having studied English literature at Cambridge university, she took an enjoyable temporary trip into the ‘real world’ as a factory planner, before returning to her first love and becoming an author. History has also always fascinated her. Living in an old house with a stone fireplace, she often wonders who sat around it before her. She is intrigued by how actively the past is woven into the present, something she likes to explore in her novels. Anna loves the way that writing lets her ‘try on’ so many different lives, but her favourite part of the job is undoubtedly hearing from readers.
