The Museum Murder, by Katie Gayle

The Museum Murder book cover

The next employment adventure for Epiphany Bloom begins! She is hired by a museum to locate a missing dress, THE dress from Pretty Woman. But being an amateur sleuth can be dangerous and someone prizes the dress more than a human life…
The Museum Murder is the second book to feature Pip Bloom and the writing, plot and characters continue to be delightfully madcap and entertaining.
Pip is just wonderful. Warm, kind, intuitive, brave, a little bit hapless. Money is still an issue and she has lost her job at the detective agency that she accidentally got in the first book, The Kensington Kidnap. She has a potential romantic triangle to navigate as both her flat mate Tim and personal trainer Jimmy might be interested in more than friendship.
The writing is witty and warrm. I love Pip’s sister Flis and her mistaken sayings. There are further references to disasters in Pip’s past, mentioned in an offhand way to spark our interest and imagine the worst! We finally meet her mother with a subplot about llamas which adds a lightness and even more fun.
The murder itself doesn’t happen until halfway through the book. There is very little violence or detail about the death. There are plenty of characters acting suspiciously in the first half of the book and to be honest I felt that the murder was superfluous to the plot as the missing dress held my interest.
The Museum Murder is a highly enjoyable and engaging cosy murder mystery which allows Pip to truly shine again.

The Museum Murder book description:
Dastardly deeds, daring deceptions and a dress to die for… Epiphany Bloom is back on the case!
Epiphany ‘Pip’ Bloom, would-be detective and London’s unluckiest woman, finds herself in a real costume drama when she unearths a theft at a fashion museum.
The missing dress is a proper piece of Hollywood history, worth a fortune. And as Pip investigates, she finds the museum staff all had reasons to want the garment gone. From fancy boutiques to sketchy back alleys, Pip discovers the fashion world is not all glitz and glamour as she hunts down her prize.
As if she doesn’t have enough on her plate, Pip also has her growing feelings for her housemate Tim to contend with, a family of cats to feed and her mother keeps phoning about a shipment of llamas arriving any day now from South America.
But there’s no time for distractions because Pip’s not the only one after the dress. And for the most dedicated collectors, a piece like this is worth any price – even murder…
A laugh-out-loud, light-hearted cozy mystery for fans of M.C. Beaton, T.E. Kinsey and Joanne Fluke, that will have you reading late into the night.

The Blessed Bones, by Kathryn Casey

The Blessed Bones book cover
The body of a young woman and her unborn child are found on a construction site. Clara Jefferies is determined to discover the woman’s identity but finds herself with several missing women case files. Which one could this be?
The Blessed Bones is the third crime thriller in the Clara Jefferies series from author Kathryn Casey. I have previously reviewed the other books in the series: The Fallen Girls and Her Final Prayer.
Clara continues to face resentment from the polygamous community she rejected. Her family situation worsens as her mother suffers a stroke. Clara is such a likeable character, struggling to deal with her past and in this book she confronts it head on yet again. On a happier note, her relationship with Max seems stronger than ever despite their traumatic pasts.
The case itself is nasty and emotional as it deals with vulnerable pregnant women and their unborn children. As well as Clara’s first person perspective, we see chapters which show young Violet as she approaches the birth of her child. She is particularly scared as her friends at the shelter disppear after their births.
In a side plot, Clara is investigating old cases of potential physical and sexual abuse amongst the community she left. The animosity towards her is virulent and the misogyny and power play is very unpleasant to witness.
I really enjoyed the style of writing and the use of both Clara’s first person and the third person other viewpoints is really effective for conveying the plot. The narrative twists and turns as she uncovers clues, and Clara is a fab character that we want to succeed in her personal and professional lives.
The Blessed Bones was thoroughly engaging and had me hooked from start to finish.

The Blessed Bones book description:
She could hear nothing but the sound of her own heartbeat. It was dark and the rough ground scraped against her as she tried to move. Being alone was strange to her—she was so used to her big family, to the noise, the warmth, but the last thing she wanted was for the woman to return…
When Detective Clara Jefferies returned home to Alber, Utah, she knew it would take a long time to convince the closed community to trust her. So she is surprised to be called to private land up in the mountains, until she hears that the bones of a young girl have been found. And hidden in the dark depths of the grave are the remains of a baby too…
Digging into the town’s missing persons files, Clara is shocked to discover that pregnant girls have been going missing for years. And when she spots Ash Crawford, the first cop on the scene, praying over the bodies, she begins to suspect that he knows more about the victim than he’s letting on.
With Crawford staying silent, and the identity of the girl still unknown, Clara’s only choice is to visit every family living on the mountaintop, desperate to find what they might be hiding. But doing so means facing the man she was once bound to, and the tall iron gates of the ranch she ran away from all those years ago.
Then another pregnant girl is reported missing, and Clara ramps up her search, racing to find her alive. But can she uncover the town’s dark secrets in time to save both the girl and her unborn child?
A heart-pounding crime thriller that twists and turns like a rollercoaster, leaving you on the edge of your seat. Readers of Lisa Regan, Linda Castillo and Kendra Elliot will be completely addicted.

Blood Stained, by Rebecca Bradley

Blood Stained book cover

Police officer Ruth Harrison is viciously attacked and then vanishes from her home. Her husband Dominic is a high profile police officer, leading the investigation into the Sheffield Strangler. But now he is the prime suspect and he needs to convince his colleagues of his innocence so that they can find his wife and catch the Strangler.
Wow! Blood Stained is the first in a new police and crime thriller series and what a way to begin! We witness the brutal attack on Ruth in the opening chapter and then are straight into the investigation into her disappearance.
The plot is delivered through the third person perspectives of Dominic and Claudia. His chapters showcase his frantic search over the last six months to find the Sheffield Strangler before he strikes again. Meanwhile the chapters that focus on Claudia show her interviewing Dominic in connection wth his wife’s attack and to get the inside story on his case.
There are some major plot twists scattered through the book and plenty of bodies to ramp up the tension. Including Ruth’s attack at the start sets the tone but also invests us in the search for the truth and justice. We develop a feeling of dread that the Strangler has still got her alive or dead but hope that together Dominic and Claudia can unpick the clues to find her safe.
The pace of the writing is quite fast and the events seem relentless. Dominic and Claudia have an authenticity and their revulsion at the murders is both realistic and human. There are some unpleasant forensic details but they are not gratuitous.
Blood Stained was completely gripping and I can’t wait to see what happens next for Claudia in her career and personal life.

Bring Him Home, by Nicole Trope

Bring Him Home book cover

A tourist stumbles across a violent scene: a man has been stabbed, his wife holds the knife, and their autistic son is missing. Can the search party find Theo and bring him back safely…?
Bring Him Home has a dramatic start! Author Nicole Trope throws us straight into the action as tourist Amber finds the ugly family situation. Cecelia is unable to speak and cannot let the police or hospital know what really happened. Her husband is being operated on and their daughter is drunk at a uni bar. It takes a while to realise that 11 year old Theo is missing.
Luckily, Theo finds shelter with Rose and a new plot thread begins as she reminisces about her brother Lionel who also had autism but society treated him very differently. She feels like she let down her brother so helping Theo offers her the chance to redeem herself and find peace in her old age.
The plot is delivered in a linear way with some overlap so that we can see different characters’ perceptions of events. This is particularly useful to compare how Theo sees the world in contrast to the neurotypical characters.
I enjoyed all of the different points of views that the author includes. However, it really is Theo’s voice that shines through. His perspective makes this book totally unique and engaging. The treatment of autism is handled sensitively but doesn’t shy away from a continued lack of understanding of the condition.
Bring Him Home has family drama, social commentary and is just a fascinating book. I have previously reviewed other books by Nicole Trope including: The Girl Who Never Came Home, The Life She Left Behind, The Nowhere Girl, The Boy In The Photo, and My Daughter’s Secret.

Book Description:
Where is he? Where’s my beloved child with his father’s blue eyes and a halo of golden curls? My little boy is out there on his own. Please keep him safe, I silently beg, please, please just keep him safe.
‘Your son is missing,’ they say, and life as I know it is over. ‘Where would he go?’ the police ask. ‘Where would he be?’ my daughter begs.
My heart races as images flash in my mind. The cabin we rent every autumn, surrounded by fiery red maple trees. Voices raised. Tears falling. A marriage falling apart. And worst of all my husband telling our child, Theo, to run.
The rest is a blank in my memory. If I close my eyes I can almost see it. A betrayal that has left me alone, in tatters, grieving for what we had.
It wasn’t meant to be like that. It should have been precious time as a family, with boardgames, walks in the mountain and pancakes for breakfast.
Instead my little one is has vanished. ‘They are looking for him,’ the nurse told me, ‘but the storm is slowing down the search.’
The police think Theo has the answers, that he knows what tore our family apart. But I have no idea where he is. No clue if he is safe. I won’t survive unless I bring him home. But if I do, and the truth comes out, will I survive that?
A completely gripping, beautifully written and totally heartbreaking page-turner, which examines what happens behind closed doors, and the secrets that can shatter a family. Fans of Jodi Picoult, Diane Chamberlain and Liane Moriarty will be totally addicted to this breathtaking novel.

Close My Eyes, by Beverley Harvey

Close My Eyes book cover

TRIGGER WARNING: this book deals with abuse and assault
Beth and Gemma are old friends, brought together by Beth’s childhood friend Guy who is now Gemma’s husband. After seeing another old friend, Beth begins to have flashbacks about events that took place when she was 13. Gemma’s marriage is less perfect than she pretends but can she trust herself when the alcohol and sleeping pills seem to disappear much to easily…?
Close My Eyes is an intense psychological thriller featuring two main female protagonists. Both women seem quite happy at the start of the book but gradually fractures in their perfect lives begin to appear.
A chance encounter with a face from the past leads Beth to have panic attacks. Triggers from sights and smells keep triggering more attacks. She seeks counselling which reveals shocking facts about her past. Meanwhile, Gemma’s husband Guy becomes increasingly cruel and controlling. The psychological control branches into physical violence in an insidious way.
I felt that there was a realism to both of the women and their circumstances. They are likeable so we want the best for them yet dread their situations worsening. There was a big plot twist but it was pretty obvious, however it was enjoyable to see how the author handled the developments.
There are other issues and subplots at work in the book. The gendered division of labour and the value of women’s contribution to the household, the experience and importance of mental health therapy, the vulnerability of age and the impact on family members.
Close My Eyes is an engaging and enjoyable thriller due to the strength of the main two characters. I have previously reviewed The Perfect Liar by Beverley Harvey.

Description:

It starts with a chance sighting: a face from her past, someone Beth hasn’t thought about for years. Suddenly she feels a terrifying wave of panic – the flash of a memory, of crushing weight and pain, and the flicker of firelight and smoke. Something in Beth’s past has been disturbed… And nothing will ever be the same again.
You’ve started to remember…
Beth never had any reason to doubt her peaceful, happy upbringing. Then she suddenly starts getting awful flashes of an event from her past – a vicious attack from an unknown person. And she thinks it could be more than just a nightmare. But how could she forget something this big?
Someone wants you to forget…
With no husband or boyfriend to turn to, she asks her trusted family and old friends for reassurance, only to hear that it must all be in her head. Meanwhile, the flashes get stronger, more frightening, and more details start to come back to her – details she knows she couldn’t have invented. But these are people who have known her all her life and have her best interests at heart. Who should she believe?
What will you risk to discover the truth?
Beth is determined to understand the meaning of these memories even if it means going it alone. But is she prepared for what she will find? Because the truth will ruin someone’s life – and they will stop at nothing to keep the past forgotten.
A heart-stopping psychological suspense novel that asks: who would you trust the most? Your friends? Your family? Or your own mind? Fans of T.M. Logan, Claire McGowan and Lisa Jewell will be gripped by Close My Eyes.
