The Girl Across The Wire Fence, by Imogen Matthews

The Girl Across The Wire Fence book cover

1944 Netherlands. A prison becomes a concentration camp. A young couple offer hope to the inmates by smuggling letters and parcels past the guards. But danger lurks and no good deeds go unpunished…
The Girl Across The Wire Fence is an historical novel set during WW2 in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. It is based on a true story which adds an extra poignancy to the plot and characters.
Frans is a 16 year old farm boy who is exempt from conscription to the German army or factories due to his essential work. Saskia is his girlfriend whose family look Jewish and are persecuted despite their papers. Theo becomes an inmate of Kamp Amersfoort due to his mistaken attendance at an anti Nazi meeting.
Together the trio offer hope to the prisoners as they smuggle and distribute letters and parcels. The tension is apparent and thoroughly described over the developments of the book. The author doesn’t shy away from the brutality of the camp but it is not shown in graphic detail.
Theo grapples with his morality as he is forced to work alongside the Nazis whilst undermining them to help the other inmates. I liked the emotion and realism of the characters which really brought them to life and made me care about them.
I found the ending a little abrupt and would have liked more of Saskia’s perspective especially due to her circumstances in the final chapters. There are lovely details about characters we have met over the course of the book which lightens the tone so that the book ends on a note of hope.
The Girl Across The Wire Fence is an engaging and interesting novel about the Dutch situation during the war.

About the Book:
1944, Amersfoort Concentration Camp, Holland. Based on a true story, the unforgettable tale of two young lovers who risked everything to keep hope alive in the very depths of hell.
On a cold, dark day in a tiny Dutch village, Saskia and her boyfriend Frans watch as Nazi soldiers force thousands of prisoners towards Amersfoort Concentration Camp. Their hearts break as they see the desperate faces of innocent men and women and realise that the war is closer to them than it’s ever been before…
Saskia’s father’s shop is raided when the guards suspect that he is Jewish, and Frans is soon forced to enter the concentration camp every day to collect scraps of food as it’s the only way to feed the animals on his family’s farm. But despite the growing fear the couple feel, when a prisoner begs Frans to send a letter to his beloved reassuring her he is alive, they know they must risk everything to help him. They smuggle his letter out, right under the noses of the Nazis. And eventually they ferry hundreds of messages for prisoners, bringing them hope in the darkest moments of their lives. But every letter Frans gets out of the camp puts him in even more danger.
Every reply Saskia manages to collect is a risk. Then Saskia is led into Kamp Amersfoort and is forced to wear a yellow star.
Inside, she cannot ignore the pain of the other prisoners, and Frans knows she will be putting herself in more danger to help them – attracting the attention of the guards. The couple know they must act. Everyone says it’s impossible to escape the camp, but it’s the only option they have left. Their love has kept them together but is it enough to help them survive?
A gripping story of love, betrayal and courage. Readers of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Nightingale and anything by Fiona Valpy will never forget this heartbreakingly beautiful novel and the great sacrifices Saskia and Frans made to change the fate of the world.

The Perfect Daughter, by Kerry Wilkinson

The Perfect Daughter book cover

Jennifer confronts Sharon about the bullying behaviour of her son. Sharon retorts that she should worry about her own daughter Katie. Shortly afterwards, there is a terrible accident and Jennifer will do anything to protect herself and her daughter. Even give in to blackmail…
The Perfect Daughter is a psychological thriller revolving around the lengths a person will go to to hide the truth.
Jennifer’s life has been upended following the ending of her marriage and she is focussed on avoiding his ex and new love. A bit tricky in a small village! She is putting extra energy into her relationship with her daughter but Katie is getting ready to spread her wings and there is tension over her boyfriend. Jennifer’s mindset is crucial to understanding her fears and subsequent behaviour.
Author Kerry Wilkinson is great at making his readers think ‘what if’. A simple accident and a split second decision. Whether you agree or not with how Jennifer deals with the situation, it is an intriguing read.
I suspected everyone of being the blackmailer! There are so many other characters behaving oddly although this could be Jennifer’s perception based on her own guilt. The book is written in the first person viewpoint of Jennifer so we are aware of all her emotional wranglings as she struggles to adjust to her own actions and their consequences.
The Perfect Daughter is enjoyable and full of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I have previously reviewed The Child in the Photo, The Blame,The Child Across The StreetAfter The Accident, Close To You and A Face in the Crowd.

The Perfect Daughter book description:
Rain pounds the windscreen in the pitch-black evening. She knows this winding country road like the back of her hand, dodges the potholes with ease. But then she hears a crunch. A thud. She slams on the brakes.
Since Katie’s dad left it’s just been the two of us, but we’re a team – singing in the kitchen at cheesy pop songs, tackling her homework. My teenage daughter is everything to me.
But one night, as we’re curled up in front of the TV, the messages start. I keep my phone away from Katie so she can’t see the terrifying words: I know what you did. Now you’re going to do something for me…
I have no choice but to obey. Because if I go to the police, come clean about what I did to protect my girl, all the questions and prying eyes would soon discover Katie’s secret too. And that would tear her life apart.
So I drive where they tell me, do what they say, send the photo evidence they want. I feel sick when they ask me to cause someone harm, and it’s clear they know everything about our lives. I thought I was keeping a secret to keep my girl safe. But have I actually put her in even more danger?
An absolutely addictive thriller about how far a mother would go for her child, with a twist that will leave you gasping. Fans of Shari Lapena, Lisa Jewell and The Girl on the Train won’t be able to put this down.
Author Bio:
Kerry Wilkinson is from the English county of Somerset but has spent far too long living in the north. It’s there that he’s picked up possibly made-up regional words like ‘barm’ and ‘ginnel’. He pretends to know what they mean.
He’s also been busy since turning thirty: his Jessica Daniel crime series has sold more than a million copies in the UK; he has written a fantasy-adventure trilogy for young adults; a second crime series featuring private investigator Andrew Hunter and the standalone thriller, Down Among The Dead Men.

Dirty Little Secret, by Jonathan Peace

Dirty Little Secret book cover

TRIGGER WARNING: this book deals with child murder
Yorkshire in the late 1980s. Louise Miller is preparing to start her new job as a female detective constable when she discovers a murder victim in a phone box. She is instantly on the case, searching for justice for the victim. However she also needs to try to establish herself in a male dominated police culture…
Dirty Little Secret is the first book in a new series that has WDC Louise Miller as its lead character. She is ably supported by a range of male colleagues and proves a welcome friend to the token woman already in the team.
I enjoyed the setting in the 80s. The world seemed simpler and less connected, with a reliance on people rather than technology. However, the smoking, police attitudes and misogyny are elements I’m glad are in reverse now!
The prologue is spooky and the victim is a child. This sets an unpleasant tone to the case and increases the readers’ hope that Louise and the team will swiftly solve the murder before anyone else is hurt. The majority of the book is written from the third person perspective of the police team but there are other chapters from the killer’s viewpoint which serves to create tension about imminent danger.
Dirty Little Secret is an enjoyable police procedural novel and I look forward to Louise’s next case.

Dirty Little Secret book blurb :-
Ossett, West Yorkshire. March, 1987.
A town of flower shows, Maypole parades and Sunday football games. But behind all the closed doors and drawn curtains are hidden truths and shameful lies.
Discovering the body of a young girl dumped into a phone box at a local beauty spot, WDC Louise Miller’s first case as detective in her hometown is made harder by the sexism and misogyny of small-town policing. But her four years on the force in Manchester have prepared her for this and along with ally WPC Elizabeth Hines, the pair work the case together.
As their inquiries uncover the town’s hidden secrets, psychologist Karla Hayes offers insights into the troubled psychological problems of the victim, revealing dark truths that could lead to the identity of the killer.
But when a second girl goes missing, Louise realises that some secrets should stay hidden.
Including hers.

Whisper Cottage, by Anne Wyn Clark

Whisper Cottage book cover

Stina and Jack are newlyweds and now expecting a baby. Stina feels uneasy about a stranger spotted in her elderly neighbour’s garden but is more disturbed by the unkind attitude of the local community towards old Mrs Barley…
Whisper Cottage is a sinister psychological thriller which deals with the occult but also the secrets we hide to protect ourselves.
The main protagonist is Stina and the book is written from her first person narrative. She has had a difficult upbringing which overshadows her own pregnancy and early days of motherhood. She develops a strong friendship with elderly Mrs Barley next door but something feels off and she is worried about the mysterious stranger in her neighbour’s garden.
There is a mystical element to Mrs Barley’s nature with her knowledge of crystals and plants as well as her adherence to the pagan calendar. This has alienated her from the local community but Stina is sure that her behaviour is harmless. However, mysterious illnesses and injuries, even deaths, have been attributed to the seemingly benign Mrs Barley…
Stina is full of doubts about whether she can trust her own instincts. The tension grows throughout the book before coming to a satisfying conclusion with all the strands tied up. I felt a little disappointed as the paranormal element slips away in the final chapter: I wanted to stay spooked!
Whisper Cottage is an enjoyably tense and atmospheric thriller that combines spookiness with psychological components.

Author Bio – Anne Wyn Clark lives in the UK, in the Midlands, with her husband, son and a feisty chinchilla. She has three (now grown-up) children and five grandchildren. She is particularly partial to Italian food, decent red wine (or any coloured wine come to that…) and cake – and has been known to over-indulge in each on occasions. Anne is passionate about animals and their welfare. Whilst she has enjoyed writing for many years, a love of all things gothic inspired her to try her hand at producing something dark and twisty, culminating in the haunting Whisper Cottage.

The Trapped Wife, by Samantha Hayes

The Trapped Wife book cover

TRIGGER WARNING: this book contains child murder, rape and domestic abuse
GP Jennifer Miller is adjusting to life as a widow when she discovers she is pregnant. The baby is the result of a drunken night out so she is shocked when the father appears in her consulting room. Scott soon forces his way into Jennifer’s life and makes it clear he is here to stay…
The Trapped Wife is a dark and sinister psychological thriller. The atmosphere is created in a  really effective way but it is also relentlessly unpleasant. It is compelling reading with fabulous twists.
The book is written from three perspectives: Jen in the first person in the present day, her best friend Rhonda in the third person also in the present day, and a deeply unhappy boy in the past as a third person viewpoint. This variety of perspectives is a creative way of giving us glimpses into the lives of different characters.
Jen’s life has been in turmoil for months as she suspected her husband was having an affair. Out at a conference, she got drunk and had a one night stand which may not have been consenual but is now pregnant and having flashbacks about the night of the conception. Her husband disappeared during an avalanche and now her potential rapist has tracked her down and is blackmailing her.
It is a very intense plotline, further escalated by the chapters set in the past. A boy, Evan, is living with domestic abuse and is desperately unhappy at school. He finally makes a friend and they set up the Kill Club with tragic consequences.
Author Samatha Hayes does an amazing job of creating multiple possibilities in the readers’ minds as we try to figure out the connections between the past and present. I doubt anyone would fully guess the ways that all the strands weave together!
The Trapped Wife was a gripping novel but tackles big issues that were sometimes difficult to read about. I have previously reviewed other books by Samantha Hayes including: Single Mother, The Happy Couple and The Liar’s Wife.

The Trapped Wife book description:
The rain hammers the glass outside. My husband has stoked the wood burner with a fresh supply of logs, and I’ve just put a joint of beef in the oven. It’s the most clichéd Sunday afternoon ever, and it’s the most heavenly one, too. Little do I know that days later, the ash in the fire will be all that remains of us…
My perfect life…
I thought I had it all – a dream job as a doctor in small town, a stunning home and a family I adore – but that illusion shattered the moment my husband Jeremy left on a work trip and vanished without a trace. Now my son and I are all alone in the world.
My missing husband…
My best friend thinks Jeremy had an accident up in the mountains, that I’ll never see him again and need to move on. I know he loves us too much to ever abandon us, but my head is still spinning with the texts I found on his phone before he left. Did I ever really know the man I married?
The night I can’t remember…
Everything changed the night of the medical conference weeks before Jeremy disappeared. I wrack my brains for answers, but my memory goes blank after my first drink. Ever since, I’ve felt like I’m being followed and can’t explain why panic thunders in my chest every time I see my newest patient. If he’s not local to the village, then why does he seem so familiar? And so dangerous?
As I piece together the shards of what really happened that fateful evening, only one thing can possibly be true: everyone is lying, even me…
