Queen of Blood, by Sarah Kennedy

Queen of Blood book cover

England 1553. Mary Tudor ascends the throne and restores Catholicism. But not everyone is happy and rebellion brews…
Queen of Blood is the fourth book in Sarah Kennedy’s The Crown and the Cross series but the first book by this author that I have read (something I will swiftly amend!) Set in Tudor England, the series of book charts one woman’s life through the rapidly changing religious and political situation.
My degree is in History and the Tudors are my favourite era so I am thrilled to have found a new author to enjoy. The big political figures and major events are all included and covered in sufficient detail to appeal to historians.
Catherine Davies is a former nun, now happily married to Benjamin. Her sixteen year old son Robbie returns from the continent and seems determined to cause his mother concern by supporting the Protestant faith against the Queen.
At the heart of the story is a very authentic woman who modern readers will be able to easily identify with. Her worries for herself and her children are intensified by the very real danger they are facing as a result of love and faith. The characters are all well developed and human. The style of writing and dialogue are modern which helps to bring the past to life but also makes it relatable.
Queen of Blood is a hugely enjoyable historical novel and I can’t wait to catch up with the earlier books.

Queen of Blood, Book Four of the Cross and the Crown series, continues the story of Catherine Havens, a former nun in Tudor England. It is now 1553, and Mary Tudor has just been crowned queen of England. Still a Roman Catholic, Mary seeks to return England to its former religion, and Catherine hopes that the country will be at peace under the daughter of Henry VIII. But rebellion is brewing around Thomas Wyatt, the son of a Tudor courtier, and when Catherine’s estranged son suddenly returns from Wittenberg amid circulating rumours about overthrowing the new monarch, Catherine finds herself having to choose between the queen she has always loved and the son who seems determined to join the Protestants who seek to usurp her throne.

Cross My Heart, by D.K. Hood

Cross My Heart book cover

Jenna Alton’s home is under attack and her life in danger. A killer from her past, a copycat or a coincidence? In the woods, couples are being hunted and murdered by a killer with a crossbow, again echoing a previous killing spree that Jenna investigated. But that killer is in prison…
Cross My Heart is the twelfth book to feature Alton and Kane. It does draw on events in previous books but there is enough content to understand what has happened in the past if you are not reading them in order.
Jenna seems much more vulnerable in this book. Kane has been physically weakened by events in the last book and this combined with the attack on her home makes her lose confidence. Once again Jenna is in the crosshairs of a killer’s attention. This increases the tension as we wait to find out if the team can catch the killer before he attacks Jenna.
The majority of the book shows the police perspective but we also have chapters dedicated to the killer’s viewpoint and his victims. This allows us to see the motivation and anticipate (or dread!) what might happen next.
As usual, the pace is relentless. However, it is the characters and their relationships which drive the plot along. Alton and Kane continue to have this intense friendship which teeters on attraction but they hold back due to their pasts. Jenna locks horns with lawyer Sam Cross again. The supporting police characters bolster the book by providing opportunities for the main characters to develop a personal and softer side.
Cross My Heart is another enthralling instalment to the Alton and Kane series. I have previously reviewed books 4-11 in the series: The Crying Season, Where Angels Fear, Whisper in the Night, Break the Silence, Her Broken WingsHer Shallow Grave, and Promises in the Dark, and Be Mine Forever.

About the Book:
She wakes to the sound of footsteps outside her secluded home. Moving toward the window, she scans the dark woods around her and freezes. A tall figure in a long dark coat holds a crossbow pointed right at her. She blinks as lightning cracks overhead. But when she opens her eyes, the figure has vanished…
When the body of a man is found in the dense forest surrounding Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton immediately sees disturbing similarities with a past case—the same murder weapon, the remote beauty spot, and the way the victim is perched against a tree with no sign of a struggle. But the killer in that case was jailed for life.
Jenna suspects a copycat killer and her fears are confirmed when, during the town’s Halloween festival, the bodies of two tourists are found further down the remote trail. They too had been hunted down and murdered in another picturesque spot and all Jenna can hope is that the man behind bars can help her catch the twisted monster behind these new deaths.
As she comes face to face with the vicious murderer who has haunted her dreams for years, she is sure he knows more than he’s telling her. Looking deep into Jenna’s eyes, as if they’re two old friends catching up, he promises to take his final revenge on her for locking him up. But before she can learn more, he is dragged away by prison guards.
When a sudden emergency call takes Jenna and her deputy David Kane deep into the woods, Jenna senses something is very wrong about the situation. As a strange calmness falls over the forest, a familiar face emerges from the shadows. Will this killer be the one who finally takes down Sheriff Alton, and can they make it out of the forest alive?

The Lies She Told, by Lynda Renham

A quiet village is shocked by a savage attack that leaves a woman for dead. Disgraced police officer Tom Miller is assigned to the crime but will his past get in the way of solving the case…?
The Lies She Told is an engaging police thriller with likeable lead detectives and a complex crime.
Beth Harper wanted to go for a promotion but decided she wasn’t in the right place emotionally afte the breakdown of her marriage. She is outraged when another officer gets the job who has a traumatic event in his past which turned him to drink.
I warmed to Tom Miller as the book progressed. He is a stickler for the rules but his tragic past overshadows his attempts to move on. Together, Beth and Tom are determined to solve this seemingly inexplicable crime and reassure the villagers. But they also develop a trust with each other which allows them to finally face the secrets they are hiding.
The book is written from the third person perspective of the village in 2019 as well as first person viewpoints of Rob and Mae from the 2000s. This latter feature prepares us for their significance in the plot developments. Mae and the attack victim are close friends. Mae has had a troubled life with an ill mother and then her own ill health followed by her daughter Blanche’s alarming symptoms. Her marriage to Rob grows increasingly volatile as he feels pushed out and unloved.
There are some pretty big twists and I did manage to guess them but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book as it was masterfully written with the right tone and pace. The characters are well developed and the importance of the past for the police and their suspects is very engaging.
There are some episodes of violence but they are not gratuitous or too graphic. The climax of the subplot about Tom’s past is action packed and dramatic!
The Lies She Told is the third book I have read and loved by this author. I have previously reviewed The Day Henry Died and She Saw What He Did by Lynda Renham.

The Lies She Told book cover

The Lies We Told book blurb:
Life in the village of Stonesend is pretty uneventful, that is until Detective Tom Miller is transferred there following a personal tragedy. He is not greeted well by local police officer, Beth Harper, who feels he is not up to the job. The day of his arrival, Kate Marshall, a teacher at the local school, is beaten in her own home and left for dead.  The villagers are left in a state of shock.  Was it a random attack, or something more personal?

The Lily Garden, by Barbara Josselsohn

The Lily Garden book cover

Caroline’s happy childhood memeories are threatened when her hometwon decides to demolish her late mother’s lily garden. Caroline travels back to Lake Summers with her daughter Lee so they can save the garden. She uncovers secrets about her parents but this is sweetened by a romance with local historian Aaron. However, he has secrets of his own…
The Lily Garden is a story about the past, present and future, a family’s memories and hopes.
The majority of the plot is delivered from Caroline’s perspective in the third person. She is a likeable character and a dedicated mother. There has been sadness in her life in the form of the early deaths of her parents and now the lily garden that her mother created and loved is under threat. I was surprised that Caroline had not returned to Lake Summers in the intervening years as she claimed such a happy experience there.
The relationship between Caroline and her daughter as well as the older generation of her family transforms significantly over the course of the book as she is forced to face hidden truths. There are parts of the book which are very sad but the overall impression of the book is of warmth and hope.
Caroline has a second chance of happiness with Aaron but their path to romance isn’t as straightforward or speedy as readers would want! The romance is gentle rather than passionate and fitted well with the characters’ personalities and circumstances.
The Lily Garden is an emotional and poignant book about reconciling our memories with reality. I have previously reviewed The Bluebell Girls by Barbara Josselsohn.

The Lily Garden book blurb
She held the letter that she had found in the garden, and noticed the distinctive curls of her father’s handwriting etched on the worn paper. Her life had already been turned upside down by one family secret, would his last words force her to leave her childhood home forever?

When Caroline left Lake Summers thirty years ago, she thought she’d never go back to the place where she lost her parents. But when she finds out that the town’s lily garden lovingly built by her mother is going to be destroyed, she knows fate is calling. Dropping everything at her office in Chicago, she knows she is the only person who can save the garden.

Caroline and her daughter Lee are welcomed home by the warm smile of her mother’s best friend Maxine, and piles of pancakes at her cozy little restaurant in town. And Caroline soon learns that she isn’t the only person invested in saving her mother’s legacy, when she meets handsome historian Aaron. As she gets to know him, strolling along the sparkling lakeshore, she can’t imagine anywhere else she’d rather be.

But then Caroline learns a terrible secret about the day her mother died. And soon the real reason Aaron is in Lake Summers comes to light. Will the truth about the people she loves force her to give up a future with Aaron, and the beautiful town that has always been in her heart?

An utterly uplifting and heart-warming story about forgiveness and family. Perfect for fans of Carolyn Brown, Debbie Macomber and Mary Alice Monroe.

Just Married, by Kiersten Modglin

Just Married book cover
Newlyweds Ryan and Grace take a small scale honeymoon to a remote cabin in the woods. Things start well but then strange things begin to happen after a chance encounter with a man in the woods. With no car and phone, can the couple stay safe and will the secrets they are hiding from each other finally come to light…?
Just Married is an entertaining thriller. This is the first book I have read by Kiersten Modglin and I really enjoyed it so will search out her other novels.
The plot and secrets unravel as the chapters alternate between Ryan and Grace’s first person narrative. Both main characters were well developed and it really helped to have their personal perspectives on events as they unfurled. Their relationship seemed authentic: still in the first flush of love, considering starting a family, pet owning.
I had suspicions galore but the twists kept coming! Both of the couple are keeping secrets but can their marriage survive the truth? I honestly had no idea how it would end or how I wanted the characters to continue their lives.
There is a tension which is maintained throughout the book. The atmosphere is almost claustrophobic as the couple’s world shrinks when their phones and transport are cut off. Then there is the danger from the man in the woods and the couple discover that they are staying in an infamous ‘murder cabin’.
Just Married had me hooked as I was immersed in the couple’s dangerous lies and the multiple plot twists.
