His Other Woman, by Louise Voss

His Other Woman book cover

A split second decision has massive consequences… Liam is grieving for his twin brother and decides to embark on a trip to Spain. He waves goodbye to his wife and three children but then spots a poster for a ski resort. In an instant, he chooses to head there instead but has a catastrophic accident before he phones home to tell them of his change of plan. Waking up with amnesia, will he ever be reunited with his family…?
His Other Woman is an intriguing ‘what if…’ type of book. The situation was credible and makes you wonder how you would react.
The story is delivered though three viewpoints: Alanda, Liam and Katya. I really enjoyed the three perspectives of this family drama as events unfolded. It was easy to identify with the main characters and understand their actions even when not agreeing with them.
Liam has had a tough few years and his wife Alanda supports his need to get away. There is a hint of a midlife crisis too as he decides to act with a spontanetity that is out of character. His commitment and love for his family is never in doubt but then he gets amnesia as a result of an accident and relies heavily upon Katya for his recovery. I felt that things moved very fast but Katya’s motives become clearer later in the book.
The stress and upset for Alanda and her children is described so authentically. Their battle to stay positive and hopeful when there is no news for months is heartbreaking. I honestly had no idea how I wanted this book to end and which woman Liam should choose. Things get tangled in the final part of the book but I thought the ending was a fitting conclusion.
His Other Woman is a thoroughly entertaining family drama that will get you thinking ‘what if…’

His Other Woman book description:
What would you do if the love of your life forgot you… and met someone else?
I waved my husband goodbye at the airport, and he vanished without a trace. I sat awake, night after night, looking at photos of our family. I knew he would never leave us.
And then I found him.
Now he lives with the younger, beautiful woman he thinks he loves. And he doesn’t even recognise me.
Who will he choose? Can I forgive him? And will I ever be able to look into his eyes without thinking of his other woman?
From the bestselling author Louise Voss comes a heartbreakingly emotional story about family and forgiveness, that will make you cry and hold on tight to the ones you love. Perfect for fans of Nicole Trope, Kerry Fisher and The Silent Daughter.

The Evidence, by K.L. Slater

The Evidence book cover

Esme Fox is trying to get the story of a lifetime: an exclusive podcast series of interviews with convicted husband killer Simone Fischer. But her success causes problems in her personal life. Her sister goes missing, only to turn up days later in a coma. Her ex tries to wriggle back into her life to help care for their son. And is her growing friendship with killer Simone healthy?
The Evidence is a psychological thriller about one woman’s search for the truth concerning a famous crime but uncovers secrets within her own family as well.
Simone alleges killed her husband after years of abuse but the jury felt differently. Now Esme wants to make a name for herself by being the journalist to give the first ever account of Simone’s soide of the story. But Simone’s own family do not want the interviews to go ahead and then Esme’s sister and business partner Michelle disappears instead of attending a big work meeting.
I found it a little confusing at the start as it goes backwards and forwards in time to show Michelle’s disappearance. However, I soon settled into the story once it transferred back to a linear time structure. Some of the twists made me gasp with relish as I scrambled to reassess the characters and their situations.
I liked the use of Esme’s first person narrative as well as the transcripts of her meetings with Simone. A few chapters are written from Justine’s third person point of view which hints at secrets. These methods help us to get involved directly with Esme as well as suspect that things might not be as they seem.
I found my opinion of Esme varied over the book. Sometimes I really liked her and found her courageous but other times I was desperate for her to stand up for herself. Esme’s ex Owen and his mother are wonderfully awful and make Esme much more likeable by showing her vulnerability. The thread with Owen, his obnoxious family and their scheming was the highlight of the book for me!
The Evidence was an enjoyable thriller about family secrets and lies. I have previously reviewed other books by K.L. Slater including The Marriage, The Girl She WantedLittle Whispers, Single and Finding Grace.

The Evidence book description:
I can see her through the glass door. She’s smaller in real life than I expected. She looks the exact opposite of the type of woman that might murder her husband.
Everyone’s heard of Simone Fischer. The young mother accused of killing her husband in cold blood, one sunny afternoon, while their son played in the room next door.
So when journalist Esme secures an exclusive interview with her it feels like the opportunity of a lifetime. Simone has remained silent since her husband’s death but after a decade in prison, she is willing to talk to Esme. And Esme, recently freed from her own toxic marriage, is confident she can get Simone to open up.
At their first meeting, when Esme sees Simone sitting across the table from her in jeans and a lemon tunic top, she is stuck by her ordinariness. Then Simone begins to tell her story of an abusive relationship where she was a prisoner in her own home, and Esme decides that the truth needs to come out.
But not everyone is pleased that Esme is telling Simone’s story. And when Esme’s beloved sister is left for dead in a nearby wood, Esme’s life begins to unravel. Forced to question what Simone has told her, she can’t help but wonder if murder was the only way out of Simone’s marriage. Why has it taken Simone so long to tell the world the truth? And will the consequences be devastating for Esme?
An utterly addictive and jaw-dropping read from bestselling author K.L. Slater about the darkness behind closed doors. If you like Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train you will LOVE The Evidence.

Wishbone, by Stewart Giles

Wishbone book cover
A killer uses death metal band Wishbone’s lyrics to kill his victims in a horrific way. DS Jason Smith is back from a traumatic vacation so can he stay focussed and find the murderer before the next lyric is brought to life (death)…?
Wishbone is the fifteenth novel to feature DS Jason Smith, his wife DC Whitton and the rest of their team. Smith and Whitton’s personal life is in turmoil following events in the previous book (which I have somehow missed 🙁 ) and there are major spoilers so I would advise reading the series in order.
I literally devoured this book. It is gory, gruesome, grisly and VERY graphic but I just couldn’t put it down. The murder methods and forensic details are described in detail and they are horrific.
Smith and Whitton begin the book on leave, recovering from events in Australia. But Smith is champing at the bit to get back to work and this case needs his expertise. Women are being killed in a way linked to song lyrics from a death metal band (not a genre of music that I was really aware of, and not one I’ll be following now!)
The pace of the plot is completely relentless and this is a real page turner of a book. There are not many suspects to choose from, unless it is a deranged fan, and the police are anxious to get ahead of the killer to prevent any more sickening murders. Our witnessing of the lyrics ramps up the anticipation of the murders which we then experience too, dreading what we know will happen but unable to tear our eyes away from the page!
Despite the grisly crimes and the worry over Smith’s daughter’s mental health, there are touches of humour such as when Smith and Whitton attend a death metal gig and wry comments about their superior officers.
Wishbone is a brilliantly gruesome police thriller and I absolutely loved it!

Book blurb
WISHBONE
‘BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.’
These seemingly innocent song lyrics are about to send Detective Jason Smith over the edge.
Still traumatised after a harrowing trip back home, Smith is sent headlong into the stuff of nightmares when he returns to work. When a woman is found dead with her spinal cord severed Smith and his team are thrown into the most disturbing investigation ever.
Then another body is found and when Smith realises what this woman was subjected to he knows he’s on the trail of the most sadistic killer he’s ever come across.
All clues point to a death metal band.
Wishbone are in town for a few shows and when Smith realises all the murders bear striking similarities to their song lyrics he starts to wonder if there is something more to this band than meets the eye.
This is the most horrifying case of Smith’s career and one the people of York will never forget.

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brought together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.
The Miranda trilogy is something totally different. A psychological thriller trilogy. It is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.
The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow with book 16 coming soon. In addition I have an new series featuring an Irish detective who relocated to Guernsey. The first 4 books in the Detective Liam O’Reilly series are now available.

How Much Wine Will Fix My Broken Heart? by Kristen Bailey

How Much Wine Will Fix My Broken Heart? book cover

Grace Callaghan is a widow in her 20s. Her late husband Tom leaves her a letter telling her to go out and enjoy life and includes a world trip ticket for her to begin her adventure. Three years later and she is helping to organise a memorial but will this finally heal her heart…?
How Much Wine Will Fix My Broken Heart? is a wonderful mix of humour and heartbreak. The letter from Tom at the beginning grabbed my heart and squeezed it so tight. His fun personality radiates through his ‘goodbye letter’ to his beloved wife, but the tinge of sadness almost had me blubbing in the opening pages!
The richness of the nuances of love and life are brilliantly evoked over the course of the book. The first person narrative of Grace as well as the letters she and Tom wrote to each other while he was travelling bring both characters to life vividly.
Grace and Tom did not have the perfect relationship but their love resonates through the pages. His final gift of a world trip gave Grace the unexpected opportunity to be a mother and to make unlikely friends, but she has still not moved on from her grief.
Despite the poignancy, there are wonderful turns of phrase and humour which make this a truly uplifting book. There are brilliant run ins with the head of the PTA, playground politics and family bickering that feels so natural and will have you smiling.
This is the fourth book to feature the Callaghan sisters and I loved the previous one Did My Love Life Shrink In The Wash? The sisters have a great relationship with each other and support each other whilst also teasing each other relentlessly.
How Much Wine Will Fix My Broken Heart? is a genuine, warm novel that manages to make you both happy and sad as you read.

How Much Wine Will Fix My Broken Heart? book description:
Are you suffering from a broken heart? Searching for the right medicine? Staring down the barrel of being single and not knowing where to start? Learn from Grace Callaghan! She’s done it all:
    • Wine is the answer. Some serving-size suggestions include: a glass the size of your head, a bathtub, an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Best served chilled, and with a straw.
    • Friends with benefits is always an option. Be prepared for side effects such as the guy saying ‘baby’, crying out his ex’s name and preferring to keep his socks on.
    • Going ‘out out’ helps banish the blues. It may involve breaking into replica ships from the fifteenth century, screaming ‘Aye-aye, Captain!’ and accidentally falling off the plank.
    • Karaoke makes everything better. Best enjoyed singing Enrique Iglesias, followed by an extra-large serving of fries.
Three years ago, when Grace’s heart was blown to smithereens, she made a promise to protect herself. But has she gone too far? Has she played it too safe? Should she take a leap into the unknown, messy business of the heart? Because maybe, just maybe, she could learn to love again…
This hilarious and totally gripping tale is for anyone who’s questioned their qualifications at life, and learned that a little bit of wine goes a long way! Fans of Shari Low, Sophie Kinsella and Why Mummy Drinks, be warned: prepare for odd looks when reading this in public due to the ugly laughing it induces.

The Shut Away Sisters, by Suzanne Goldring

The Shut Away Sisters book cover

1915: Florrie and Edith are teenagers during the First World War. Edith is desperate for news of her sweetheart but is both disappointed and relieved each time the list of casualties and deaths is announced. 1999: Kate is their great niece and discovers her boyfriend has been cheating on her. She moved into Florrie and Edith’s former home and begins to sort through their possessions…
The Shut Away Sisters is a dual timeline novel set in the First World War and 1990s about different generations of a family in London. Both timelines were very emotional due to grief, fear, the hardships of war and the failure of a relationship in the present.
Grief significantly impacts the lives of Florrie and Edith and leads on to their status as maiden aunts as Kate knows them. I think there is an important message about seeing the elderly as people with life and loves as we have. War and society have changed significantly over the last century so it was fascinating to read the experiences of the teenaged girls.
Florrie is gentle and kind, and I would have love Kate to have had more opportunity to speak with her in the modern timeline. I struggled to like her sister Edith although I understand her grief shaped her actions and behaviour. Kate is a warm and loving character and I was incensed by her philandering boyfriend. I am relieved she had the courage to stand up for herself but wish she’d had the confidence to do it sooner as their relationship had been coasting for a while.
I loved the wartime perspective to see what life was like for the women and children left behind. We usually associate rationing with WW2 so it was a new angle to see it in place in the 1910s. The comparison between the Spanish Flu and recent covid was too close for comfort!
The Shut Away Sisters is an enchanting novel about love and family. I have previously reviewed other historical novels by Suzanne Goldring: The Girl Without A Name, Burning Island and My Name Is Eva.

The Shut Away Sisters book description:
Two ordinary sisters. A long and brutal war. A heroic sacrifice…
London, 1915. As German bombs rain down on the East End of London and hungry children queue for rations in the blistering cold, fifteen-year-old Florrie is forced to grow up fast. With her father fighting in the muddy trenches, Florrie turns to her older sister Edith for comfort. But the war has changed Edith. She has grown quiet, with dark shadows under her eyes, and has started leaving the house at night in secret. When Florrie follows her sister through the dark and winding streets of London, she is shocked by what she discovers. But she knows she must keep her sister’s secret for the sake of their family, even if she herself must pay the ultimate price…
Years later Kate, running from her broken relationship, is sorting through her dead aunt Florrie’s house, which she shared with her sister Edith. As she sits on the threadbare carpets, looking at photos of Florrie during the war, she notices the change in her aunt – from carefree young girl with a hopeful smile to a hollow-cheeked young woman, with dark sad eyes.
Determined to put her family’s ghosts to rest, Kate must unearth the secret past of her two aunts. Why is there a hidden locked room in the little house they shared? What is the story behind the abandoned wedding dress wrapped in tissue and tied up with a ribbon? And when Kate discovers the tragic secrets that have bound her family together, will she ever be able to move on?
A heartbreaking historical novel of war, tragedy and the sacrifices we make for those we love. Fans of Fiona Valpy, Kristin Hannah and Victoria Hislop will be hooked by The Shut-Away Sisters.
