The Lost Girls of Ireland, by Susanne O’Leary

The Lost Girls of Ireland book cover

Lydia Butler’s world falls apart when her husband dies amid the revelation that he has been dishonest in his business dealings. The house is repossessed but Lydia has an inheritance from an old aunt so she and her daughter Sunny are not homeless. They uproot to Sandy Cove to start over again, hiding their identities and making the best of the situation. Can the friendly community restore their faith in themselves and heal their hearts…?
The Lost Girls of Ireland returns us to the Irish coast at Sandy Cove but can be read as a stand alone novel. We do meet some characters that have appeared in other books and I enjoyed catching up with them!
We only meet Lydia after the death of her husband so only see her past through her own eyes. She responds bravely to the devastating news of her husband’s betrayal. Her faith in her instincts are shaken but she rallies to support her daughter Sunny as their lives transform.
There is a big splash of romance for Lydia which gives a much happier tone to the book. Again, this demonstrates her bravery as he prepares to trust a man again after being so badly let down. The community accepts Lydia and she feels torn as she remembers her old life. She has the dilemma of working out what and where makes her happy: does she want to return to her past lifestyle and career in Dublin or are there more opportunities in Sandy Cove?
The book was originally titled The Irish Rose in honour of the mystery that Lydia and her daughter investigate. Lydia’s aunt had an interesting life and even a romance with a German pilot during WW2 but never married. I liked this extra dimension to the plot but wish we could have met Nellie!
The Lost Girls of Ireland is a warm and gentle novel about self rediscovery, inner strength and courage to face the future.
I have previously reviewed other books by Susanne O’Leary: Dreams of Willow House, Daughters of Wild Rose Bay, Memories of Wild Rose Bay, Miracles in Wild Rose Bay.

Description:
A heart-warming story about family secrets and one woman’s escape to dreamy Sandy Cove on the stunning west coast of Ireland.
The picturesque beach of Wild Rose Bay is the last place Lydia Butler thought she’d be. But having just lost everything, the run-down cottage she inherited from her Great Aunt Nellie is the only place she can take her daughter, Sunny. Hidden away in a tiny Irish village, she can protect Sunny from the gossip in Dublin, and the real reason they have nowhere else to live…
The cottage is part of the old coastguard station and other eccentric residents are quick to introduce themselves when Lydia arrives. Lydia instantly feels less alone, fascinated by the stories they have about Nellie, and she’s charmed by American artist, Jason O’Callaghan, the mysterious man who lives next door.
But the longer Lydia relaxes under the moonlit sky, the more the secret she’s keeping from Sunny threatens to come out. And as she finds herself running into Jason’s arms, she knows she must be honest and face up to the past she has tried to forget. Has she finally found people who will truly accept her, or will the truth force her to leave the cottage for good?
Will transport you to Ireland to relax on the shore and stare at the perfect emerald waters. The Lost Girls of Ireland is perfect for readers of Debbie Macomber, Sheila O’Flanagan and Mary Alice Monroe.

The Berlin Zookeeper, by Anna Stuart

The Berlin Zookeeper book cover

1943: the staff of Berlin Zoo struggle to save themselves and their animals from the fear of Nazi oppression and the ravages of war as the Allies bombard the city. Present day: vet Bethan arrives at Berlin Zoo to unravel the mystery of her mother’s birth and search for her biological grandmother’s story.
The Berlin Zookeeper is a dual timeline book set in the 1940s and present day. The main protagonists are Katharina and Bethan. The first is dedicated to the animals in the zoo even at risk of her own safety as the bombs fall. The latter leaves England to look for the truth about her mother’s true heritage.
Both women are brave and face personal tragedy over the course of the book. Katharina’s animals, friends and family are in constant danger from Allied attacks. The author has done a wonderful job researching the situation in Berlin during the war and the effect this had on the zoo’s inhabitants. There are some quite unpleasant descriptions of animal injuries and deaths but these are handled with stoicism and compassion by the characters.
Meanwhile, Bethan’s mother died years ago after searching to find her birth mother. Bethan remembers visitng Berlin Zoo but her mother’s investigation proved fruitless. Now Bethan has the opportunity to do the vet job she loves and try to find the answers that eluded her mum. She also has to deal with the pressures of a long distance relationship with Callum. Ooh he made my blood boil with his careless and selfish behaviour and attitude!
This book has a bit of everything, all executed well: history, love, loyalty, tragedy, mystery, danger. The Berlin Zookeeper is a lovingly researched and written novel about the horrors of war and the bravery and kindness of humanity.

Author Bio:
Anna Stuart lives in Derbyshire with her campervan-mad husband, two hungry teenagers and a slightly loopy dog. She was hooked on books from the moment she first opened one in her cot so is thrilled to now have several of her own to her name. Having studied English literature at Cambridge university, she took an enjoyable temporary trip into the ‘real world’ as a factory planner, before returning to her first love and becoming an author. History has also always fascinated her. Living in an old house with a stone fireplace, she often wonders who sat around it before her and is intrigued by how actively the past is woven into the present, something she likes to explore in her novels. Anna loves the way that writing lets her ‘try on’ so many different lives, but her favourite part of the job is undoubtedly hearing from readers. Murder on Time, by Roger Silverwood

Two murder victims are pre-warned about their impending fate but do not take measures to help themselves. DI Michael Angel is determined to bring justice to their killers but is struggling to find evidence.
Murder on Time is book 27 in the Angel series by Roger Silverwood but is the first one that I have read. There are no spoilers about previous books in the series so this works perfectly as a stand alone novel.
A gang related hit list and a husband who wants rid of his wife: two murders that DI Angel is aware of before they happen. Yet he is helpless to prevent either so works tirelessly to solve the cases. I absolutely loved this book until the very final pages when I’m sorry to say I felt it lost its realism and concluded abruptly. However, this did not spoil my enjoyment as it was highly dramatic and entertaining.
Michael Angel is a fabulous lead detective. His frustration at the lack of evidence and his dogged determination to find the truth felt very authentic. He has a settled home life with wife Mary and she allows him to switch off from policework in the evenings and weekends. The softer side to his character contrasted wonderfully with his professional demeanour.
There was plenty of action and the style of writing was utterly captivating. The book contains some violence as you would expect from a gang related crime but there is little forensic detail. Instead the focus is on Angel’s chasing down of clues and interview technique.
Murder on Time was a very enjoyable police procedural novel with a hugely likeable lead detective.

Perfect for fans of R.D. Wingfield, Colin Dexter, Peter Robinson, Reginald Hill, and Agatha Christie
THE DETECTIVE
Michael Angel is over fifty, married to Mary. They don’t have any children. They are a devoted couple but the relationship sometimes breaks down due to his job or due to the problems of Mary’s sister who lives in Edinburgh and imposes on their easy-going natures. Michael works at the small local police station and is devoted to defeating crime, murder, and dishonesty of any sort and has no personal ambition beyond being a good husband and a successful detective. He doesn’t want promotion with all the routine office work and stress that goes with it. He’s always at odds with his immediate chief, Detective Superintendent Horace Harker, who is lazy, a hypochondriac and not a bit interested in assisting Angel in serious police work.
THE SETTING
Bromersley is a market town at the bottom of the Pennines surrounded by stone and hawthorn-edged fields grazed by cattle and sheep. It is cold as anywhere in the winter but its closeness to the mountains protects it from many gales and heavy falls of snow. The town’s industry today includes the manufacture of ball bearings and whisky bottles, and a huge brewery produces Bromersley’s best bitter, which is considered the finest beer for miles around. Wednesday is market day, and the town centre is host to the frequent cries of stall-holders hawking their wares while the enticing smells of cheeses, coffees, foreign spices and fish and chips tempt your taste buds as you wander through the stalls. The police always find it difficult to catch pilferers and pickpockets in such a crowd. Bromersley folk are easy to befriend but many of the old people are stubborn and still buy their fruit and veg in pounds and ounces, not kilos and grams.
PRAISE FOR ROGER SILVERWOOD
“Solid plotting, unpretentious writing, thoroughly reliable entertainment.” Morning Star
“A cast of characters you really want to populate with familiar faces of actors you see each week on TV — great fun. Angel is terrific.” Books Monthly
“Once again Silverwood combines a classic mystery plot with well-developed characters.” Publishers Weekly

Author biography
Roger Silverwood writes crime stories about Detective Inspector Michael Angel who lives tolerably happy with his wife Mary in the town of Bromersley in South Yorkshire, UK.
Angel isn’t a drunk. He’s usually hard up and in debt but he’s an honest man. He has a reputation of always ‘getting his man’ – like the Mounties. That’s not because he is especially gifted, it’s because he’s dogged, stubborn, thorough and will use unusual methods if necessary.

One Perfect Grave by Stacy Green

Nikki Hunt is an agent with a tumultous past. Her parents were murdered and the wrong man convicted. Now she is dating his brother and it is not smooth sailing. She is called in to investigate the death of a mother and child. The mum was a former drug addict so suicide and child murder are suspected but the autopsy reveals murder of both victims. On the same day a boy goes missing: are the cases connected…?
One Perfect Grave is the second book to feature agent Nikki Hunt and there are spoliers from the previous book so I would suggest reading that first if you like reading series in order. There is enough information to make this book work as a stand alone and I have not read the first book so this did not spoil my enjoyment.
Nikki is determined to find justice for Dana and her son Kellan. Dana had been desperate to reject her former drug filled lifestyle and be a better mother to her son, regaining custody from her bitter sister. Nikki is also convinced that Zach’s disappearance is not an accident but his connection with the journalist who made Nikki’s life difficult in recent days is an added complication.
I instantly warmed to Nikki. She has been through so much in her past and is trying to move on. But she remains kind and human, dedicated to finding the truth for the victims. Her tangled personal life and the pressures of her FBI role are completely engaging.
The pace is fast and the writing is easy to read. The pages just seemed to run away as I found myself lost in the plot and engrossed in Nikki’s life.
One Perfect Grave was a brilliant thriller and I will definitely be finding the first book in the series while I wait for the next to be published.

One Perfect Grave book cover

One Perfect Grave book description:
She didn’t see the patch of black ice until it was too late. The car started to spin, and as it veered off into the deep ditch and the mounds of snow beside the road, she saw him. The little boy frozen in the ice.
When the remains of two bodies are found in an open grave along a desolate highway in Stillwater, Minnesota, Special Agent Nikki Hunt knows exactly who they are. The bright blue jacket lying on the frozen earth belongs to Kellan Rhodes, the missing boy she’s desperately been trying to find for the last two days. The other body is his mother Dana, who had been Nikki’s lead suspect.
Although the wounds on Dana’s body suggest she murdered her son and took her own life, Nikki finds evidence that suggests she was a victim too. Dana was desperately trying to regain custody of Kellan, and Nikki finds boot prints at the scene that belong to someone else.
When another child is reported missing, local journalist Caitlin Newport claims the cases are linked: Zach Reeves was taken away from his own mother in a custody battle, just like Kellan was.
Caitlin once helped Nikki find out the truth about her own parents’ murders, but her desire for a story nearly cost Nikki her life. Now, Nikki must decide if she can trust Caitlin again, before time runs out to find the killer and bring Zach home alive…
An unputdownable thriller that will make your heart pound until its final, shocking conclusion. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and readers who want to binge read into the night.

Bury Me Deep, by Jane Adams

Bury Me Deep book cover

Present day: a police informer or ‘snitch’ is found murdered at an archaeological dig. The murder weapon of a medieval spear is nearby. 878 AD King Alfred has sent a law enforcer to Theading but murder takes place and his former battlefield comrade is prime suspect…
Bury Me Deep is a dual timeline novel, an intriguing mix of police procedural novel and historical murder muytery. There is also a hint of supernatural as the two timelines collide through dreams and visions.
It took me a little while to get into the plot as the two timelines jumped about a bit in the opening chapters so I couldn’t settle into either era. The middle was excellent and dramatic. I found myself completely swept up in both timelines and interested in the comparison of the present day with the Anglo Saxon era as well as the connection of the murder weapon. The ending fizzled out a little for me but I’m looking forward to the next in the series to see where the author takes the characters from here…
Rozlyn’s character felt solid and dependable although her dreams cause her to doubt herself. She feels responsible for Charlie’s murder and is determined to bring his killer to justice, using some of her more unsavoury contacts to help the search. She pushes boundaries if she feels that the ends justifies the means, but this leads to danger and puts her at odds with her superior officers.
Meanwhile the ninth century characters also had an authenticity. Trying to survive and bring security and peace to a turbulent nation, the pagan and Christian religions battling for spiritual dominance. I found it easy to identify with Treven who seems to have a modern and pragmatic outlook which makes him likeable.
Bury Me Deep gave a fascinating and contrasting study of justice across two time periods, and overall I enjoyed it.

BURY ME DEEP (Detective Rozlyn Priest #1) by Jane Adams
THREE VICTIMS. TWO MILLENNIA. ONE TIMELESS WEAPON.
Theadingford dig site, present-day.
Detective Rozlyn Priest never expected to find herself here. Teetering on the brink of an ancient grave. She takes a breath, willing herself to look down.
Old bones, broken relics. That’s what should be buried here. Not the dead man staring back at her now.
He is Charlie Higgins, a petty criminal Roz once called on for help.
Is she the reason he’s dead? Slashed with a spear that belongs in the Dark Ages?
Roz won’t rest until she finds the truth. But her investigation is leading nowhere. And now she’s seeing things — visions of a flame-haired Saxon warrior who shares her thirst for justice.
But just how much deeper is Roz prepared to dig?
Slipping effortlessly between two intertwining mysteries, Jane Adams has crafted a police procedural like no other. Her unique blend of intrigue, mystery and history will captivate fans of Kate Mosse, Barbara Erskine, Alex North and Stephen King.
