The Moonlit Murders, by Fliss Chester

The Moonlit Murders book cover

Fenella Churche is excited with the prospect of returning from France to her home. But then she gets an offer she can’t refuse and is invited to sail to New York. Her first mystery is the theft of some priceless jewels. Then the situation turns darker when someone has murder in mind…
The Moonlit Murders is the third book to feature Fen. However, it would work as a stand alone novel as there are no spoilers about the mysteries involved in the other books. The personal side to Fen does develop over the course of the series as personal circumstances initiated in the first book have led her to her current situation.
The word that strikes me about Fen is ‘plucky’. She feels things deeply but that doesn’t stop her determination to find justice for the dead. The ongoing motif of crossword puzzles is used by Fen to straighten out the clues in her head and make connections between the information she gathers to help solve the theft and murder.
The plot itself is a slow burner and the first murder does not happen until halfway through the book. This gives us plenty of opportunity to see the interactions and relationships between the characters. We also get the chance to be detectives by looking for clues and suspicious behaviour among the boat’s passengers.
As a history graduate, I enjoyed the historical setting and the attention to detail that the author employs. The class system, the tension towards Germans following the end of WW2, gender inequalities all served to give authenticity to the plot and characters.
The Moonlit Murders is an enjoyable and cosy murder mystery. I have previously reviewed the first two books in the series: A Dangerous Goodbye and Night Train To Paris.

The Moonlit Murders book description:
When a journey to New York is interrupted by missing diamonds and a body in the lifeboat, there is only one woman who can help: Fen Churche!
1945Fen Churche follows her dreams and sails for New York. She books passage on a steam ship from France to America, excited to dance the night away in the glamorous ballroom and play games on deck. Nothing will stand in the way of her trip, not even when an eccentric heiress’s diamond tiara goes missing
Looking forward to relaxing with her favourite crossword puzzles, Fen’s quiet passage is horribly disrupted by another crime – this time a murder. Fen finds Genie, a young actress bound for Broadway, strangled in her own cabin. With no police on board and a frantic captain, Fen decides to do a little snooping of her own.
When another body turns up, hidden in a lifeboat, whilst the ship is in the middle of the Atlantic, Fen feels sure these dreadful crimes are linked. Through her sleuthing she meets light-hearted lieutenants returning from the war, charming cabin boys and snooty first-class passengers who look down their nose at her. But it isn’t until Fen realises that one person is missing from the passenger list that she is finally on the murderer’s trail.
With only rolling waves and sea mists for company, can Fen solve the case before they dock in New York and the killer escapes for good?
You’ll be utterly hooked from page one of this warm and witty cozy! An absolute treat for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey and Jacqueline Winspear.

Last Day Alive, by J. R. Adler

Last Day Alive book cover

TRIGGER WARNING: this book contains child murder
A 10 year old goes missing and after a frantic search her murdered body is discovered. A short time later, her best friend disappears too. Chief Deputy Kimberley King is determined to locate the missing girl and solve the murder before any other child is harmed…
Last Day Alive is the second book by J.R. Adler to feature Kimberley King and her team. There are references to events and outcomes from the first book so I would advise reading the series in order.
Things have been quiet for the police in Dead Woman Crossing (seriously, who would live in a place with that name?!) and it has been a year since the murders of the last book. Kimberley is called to investigate a missing girl and at first it is hoped that the matter may be a custody battle. But then a body is discovered and a murder case is launched.
The majority of the book is from the third person perspective of the police team but some chapters show the killer’s viewpoint. This serves to give us some insights into their mindset as well as make the danger to the girls more obvious.
In the midst of the investigation are personal issues for Kimberley. She has had a falling out with her mother and there is the potential for a love triangle. The gently simmering romance possibilities add a softer touch to the novel.
Last Day Alive is a tense and dramatic police procedural novel and I enjoyed it very much which seems odd to say about a despicably dark crime!

Last Day Alive book description:
One hot summer’s evening, ten-year-old Piper Chase went off on her pink bicycle towards the dark woods on Black Heart Lane. She never came home…
Piper cycles off one hot Oklahoma evening for a sleepover with her new friend Miley from summer camp. But when she doesn’t come home, her grandparents raise the alarm.
Detective Kimberley King knows that the first twenty-four hours in a missing child investigation are the most critical, but with no witnesses, and darkness falling in the small town of Dead Woman Crossing, she begins to fear the worst. She longs to find the little girl with wide blue eyes and an infectious smile, but when her team discovers Piper’s body in a woodland clearing, lying on a bed of moss, something inside her dies.
Then she gets a call that chills her to the bone. Piper’s friend Miley has gone missing
Desperate to find the monster who has taken these little girls, Kimberley chases down all the leads she has. The summer camp counsellor, who got too close to Piper and Miley and lost his job. Piper’s shifty uncle, who arrived back in town the day she disappeared…
And as another dark night descends on Dead Woman Crossing, Kimberley can’t stop thinking about Miley, trapped in the darkest place of all. With the clock ticking, Kimberley knows she must act fast, before another innocent life is stolen.
A gripping, heart-wrenching crime thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath. Last Day Alive is perfect for fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Carol Wyer.

Knife Edge, by Kerry Buchanan

Knife Edge book cover

Nic and Colm enjoy an evening out but wake up in a deserted cottage, chained up and covered in cuts and knife wounds. Nic manages to daringly escape and tries to help the police find Colm. But her captor has a violent past and a cat-and-mouse game ensues. Can Nic ever really escape his clutches?
Knife Edge is the debut crime novel from Kerry Buchanan. Although this seems to be the first book in a series about police officers Asha Harvey and Aaron Birch, the lead character of this book is undoubtedly Nic. She is courageous despite the danger she has faced and is determined to help the police.
I had to suspend my disbelief as I became embroiled in the compelling plot. The lead that Nic takes felt unrealistic but was certainly dramatic and it was enjoyable to watch events unfold. There are some chapters written from The Slasher’s perspective. This increases the tension and anticipation as we predict what he might do next and the danger it would place characters in.
The main investigating officers were not too prominent in the plot. There was an enjoyable banter between Asha and Aaron that I hope will be developed in subsequent books. However, I enjoyed the quite unique angle of focusing on the victim in a police procedural novel. The ending saw my jaw drop…
Knife Edge is a police crime novel full of thrills and tension. I look forward to seeing how the detectives develop.

A MESMERIZING BREAK-OUT CRIME THRILLER SET IN NORTHERN IRELAND FULL OF BREATH-TAKING TWISTS
Nic always hated clubbing.
She only went out that night because she’d promised a friend.
She wakes up, naked and bound in an abandoned cottage in the middle of nowhere. Dappled light comes in through a dirty window. Her body is covered in cuts. Across the room her friend groans in pain.
A shadow passes the window. He’s back.
He picks up a knife. He begins to cut her friend. In that moment of bloody frenzy, Nic wrenches free and runs.
She’s finally safe. But this is only just the beginning.
Detectives Asha Harvey and Aaron Birch arrive at the scene hours later. There is no body, there is no sign of the killer. It’s as if it never happened.
YOU THINK YOU KNOW HOW IT ENDS? THINK AGAIN.
Fans of Lynda La Plante, Tana French, Patricia Gibney, Brian McGilloway and Helen H. Durrant will devour this electrifying crime thriller by one of Northern Ireland’s newest talents.

Hush Little Girl, by Lisa Regan

Hush Little Girl book coverDetective Josie Quinn is preparing for her wedding when she becomes aware of a commotion nearby. On the steps of the church where she is about to pledge her vows, a girl’s body has been posed. Josie recognises the girl as someone she met a few months earlier and she discovers more death at the girl’s home. Can Josie find the girl’s sister and will Josie and Noah make it up the aisle?
Hush Little Girl is a tense police thriller. It is the eleventh book in Lisa Regan’s Josie Quinn series. Each book could be read in isolation as there are no spoilers about cases in the previous books. However, the character development and the relationship between Josie and Noah may benefit from being read in order.
Josie is a great character and has been through so much in the previous books that I had a happy smile at her imminent wedding and the hope of a happy ever after. She has an incredible inner strength and Noah is both lucky and brave to take her on! The professional politics between them is dealt with delicately as their personal lives threaten to take over.
The personal touch to the plot in the form of the wedding, as well as Josie’s knowledge of the victims, adds to the tension. Events occur at a fast pace and there are some very dramatic occurences which are devastating for the characters and shocking for us as readers.
I also want to point out the sympathetic treatment of mental health issues, in particular OCD. I have personal knowledge of this condition and thought it was handled accurately and sensitively.
Hush Little Girl is a very enjoyable thriller which has plenty of drama, action and tension.
I have previously reviewed Her Final Confession,The Bones She BuriedCold Heart Creek, Find Her Alive and Save Her Soul.

Description:
Dressed in pajamas covered with stars, the little girl’s body is perfectly still, her arms folded neatly over her chest. The wildflowers decorating her hair scatter across the grass in the sharp breeze. Her lips are parted slightly, as if to whisper goodnight for the very last time…
When twelve-year-old Holly Mitchell’s fragile little body is found on the steps of a mountainside church in the small town of Denton, a doll made from pine cones clasped tightly to her chest, Detective Josie Quinn rushes to attend the scene. She knows this little girl’s angelic face, her mother had offered Josie help when she’d needed it most.
Searching the girl’s house, Josie is devastated to find that Holly’s mother is dead too, and her little sister is missing. But why has this family home been stripped of all sharp objects? Re-tracing her steps, Josie finally finds a secret hiding place with Holly’s sister inside, terrified, but alive. Moments later, another doll made of twigs turns up.
Certain the killer is close by, Josie holds the little girl tight and tries to coax answers from her, but it’s clear the pile of burnt photographs and letters found in the greenhouse is her only lead. No one is safe until Josie can figure out the dangerous secret that has escaped this remote family home.
Just when Josie is finally closing in on the killer, the unthinkable happens, a tragedy that shakes her to her very core. And on the windshield of her car: a third wooden doll. Could stopping this twisted monster from taking more innocent lives come at the ultimate price for Josie?
An absolutely gripping rollercoaster ride of a crime thriller from an Amazon, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.

His First Wife’s Secret, by Emma Robinson

His First Wife's Secret book cover

Caroline and Pete’s marriage fell apart after their son Jamie’s death. Now Pete has a new relationship with Emily while Caroline continues to mourn. Unbeknown to Caroline, he has married Emily and she is pregnant. Yet he still turns up to see Caroline on a regular basis and she hopes for a reconciliation. A love triangle built on betrayal…
His First Wife’s Secret is a highly emotional family drama novel. Our sympathies are immediately directed to both Caroline and Emily. The former is grieving for her deceased son and, as a mother myself, I cannot imagine the heart break. The latter is not coping well with her pregnancy as well as grieving for her mother (again something which I can’t bear to think about).
Pete is a much more problematic character. He has charm and charisma but is he playing the women off against each other. Yet he is also dealing with the loss of his son and I can’t blame him for looking for support when his wife pushed him away.
As the title suggests, there are more revelations as the book progresses. Secrets and lies, betrayal and tragedy combine to tug at the heartstrings. I felt almost protective towards both Caroline and Emily and wanted them to find happiness.
The difficult topics are handled sensitively and there is a realism that makes the reader put themselves into the place of the characters to imagine how they feel and would react.
His First Wife’s Secret is a very enjoyable book despite the serious issues covered and the sad overtone. I have previously reviewed My Husband’s Daughter by Emma Robinson.

His First Wife’s Secret book description:
The tears began to flow. ‘I can’t do this on my own,’ Emily sobbed. ‘I don’t know how.’
When Emily’s husband dies in a terrible accident, she’s not the only wife he leaves behind.
Because, before their whirlwind romance and Emily’s discovery she was pregnant, Pete had been married to Caroline for more than twenty years. A devastating tragedy had torn them apart. But there was a part of Pete that had never fully left his first wife and a secret that would bind them together, forever.
Finding herself lonely, heartbroken, and forced to face life and motherhood alone – Emily is surprised that Caroline offers her support. But Emily knows she needs someone she can trust and rely on. Even if it’s the woman her husband loved before her.
A tentative friendship develops and their lives become entwined. Their bond grows ever stronger as Caroline steps in to help when Emily’s baby arrives unexpectedly early. But it’s not just Caroline hiding a secret. Both of the women who once loved Pete have things they can never admit, without risking a friendship that might be the only thing keeping them both afloat.
When grief begins to takes its toll on Emily, she feels sure that Caroline is the only person who can save her and baby Dylan… But should she trust the woman he loved before her – with her life… Or her child’s?
An utterly devastating, but ultimately uplifting, emotional women’s fiction novel about friendship, motherhood and loss. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Susan Lewis and Jojo Moyes.
