The Perfect Stepmother, by Karen King

The Perfect Stepmother book cover

Lily is devastated by the death of her mother from cancer. But she is shocked, angry and upset when she discovers her father Gareth is dating her late mother’s beautician. Lily doesn’t trust Maria at all and is convinced that she is not the perfect woman she appears to be. Then Lily’s little sister Emma disappears…
The Perfect Stepmother is a thriller with a strong emotional thread. Our sympathies ally us with Lily due to her grief and yet Maria drops hints that she has trauma in her past. I found that I was suspicious but also wanted Maria and Lily to find contentment so they could peacefully coexist in Gareth’s life.
The narrative is delivered from Lily and Maria’s viewpoints. It begins with Emma’s disappearance in the prologue and then tracks in a linear fashion from when Lily found out that Maria and her dad were in a relationship through to the police hunt for Emma.
Both women are portrayed sympathetically and it was easy to understand both of their perspectives. There are plenty of clues that Maria has kept secrets but the truth is not revealed until three quarters of the way through the book. Lily obviously feels heartbroken that her father has replaced her mother so quickly, yet Maria has to live in the shadow of the woman who preceded her.
I did need to suspend my disbelief a little for the final quarter of the book as the truth of Maria’s past and Emma’s disappearance is revealed. The action ramps up as events occur rapidly to an exciting conclusion.
The Perfect Stepmother is an enjoyable thriller that gradually builds tension. I have previously reviewed The Stranger in my Bed and Single All the Way by Karen King.

The Child in the Photo, by Kerry Wilkinson

The Child in the Photo book cover

Hope receives a hand delivered envelope containing a newspaper article from 34 years ago about a stolen child. The girl that went missing has the same ear defect that she has. Could she be the child in the photo? Has her whole life been a lie?
The Child in the Photo is described as a mystery thriller. There are emotional and psychological elements as Hope finds her life torn apart but suspicions and secrets. The book is written from Hope’s first person perspective so we witness events through her eyes and are privy to her thoughts about the revelations.
Events unfurl as quite a pace and Hope is left confused and upset as she concludes that her parents lied to her. But is she being told the truth now? She makes contact with various characters who give her different versions of events but now her ability to trust has been severely shaken.
The relationship that Hope has with her best friend Stephen was the real highlight of the book for me. There is gentle mocking but genuine love between the two, and they support each other as both experience trauma. Hope also has a really lovely relationship with her elderly neighbour, again offering a gentle humour and softness to contrast with the harsh issue of child abduction.
I felt that the ending was a little abrupt even though I was seething at the behaviour of certain characters as the twists develop in the concluding chapters. I was left with some questions as to what the future holds for Hope and her disjointed life.
The Child in the Photo is an entertaining read from an author who always manages to capture me in the pages of his books! I have previously reviewed The Blame,The Child Across The StreetAfter The AccidentClose To You and A Face in the Crowd.

The Child in the Photo book description:
I stare at the newspaper article about a baby snatched from the back of a car thirty years ago, and wonder why someone would post it through my door. Looking closer, my blood freezes. The little girl in the photo has an unusual scar – just like mine. I’ve never met anyone with one like it. Is this stolen child… me?
Trembling with shock, I know I have to confront my mother. My parents got me through a horrific accident, helped me find a job I love teaching art, and even with buying my own house. But was it all built on lies?
She tells me the day I was born was the best day of her life, and I’m flooded with guilt for questioning her – but why do I catch her burning papers in the garden the next day?
Then I come home to find a woman sitting on my doorstep, covered in bruises and claiming she knows who abducted me. I don’t know if I can trust her – or if I’ll be the next to get hurt.
Because all the while, I’ve been hiding my own secret. Does whoever sent the article know what really happened the day of my accident? Desperate for the truth, I break into the house of my supposed kidnapper. Inside, I find a handwritten list of names. A shiver goes down my spine as I realise wasn’t the only child to be stolen.
Then I hear a key in the lock, and I know my life is in terrible danger…
An absolutely addictive read that will have you racing through the pages and questioning everything you thought you knew about your family. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Lisa Jewell and Shari Lapena.

The Summer Island Festival, by Rachel Burton

The Summer Island Festival book cover

Willow jilts her fiance at the altar and returns to her home town to try to decide what do do with her life. She has rarely returned to the Isle of Wight since leaving 12 years ago with a heart broken by her first love Luc. She is shocked to find he has also returned to the island following a career crisis. Can love heal them both or will their secrets get in the way?
The Summer Island Festival is a warm romance novel set in two timelines: the 1980s/90s and the present day (2018).
Willow and Luc both return to the Isle of Wight and get pulled into the community that they shunned when they were 18. They are determined to save the folk music festival that Willow’s mum Cathy organises. Meanwhile they also need to reassess their own lives and follow their hearts.
In the second timeline we see Cathy as she leaves home to follow a musician on tour. This allows us to make connections and assume outcomes of the past which will impact on the present day. It saddened me that both Cathy and Willow were treated badly by men yet they couldn’t turn to each other.
I enjoyed the musical focus of the book and wanted to know if Gamble Gold is a real song! It is! Music permeates through both timelines but family is another important theme, finding people who connect with our true selves. There is also an important message about loving, accepting and respecting ourselves before we trust others to do the same.
The Summer Island Festival is an enjoyable romantic novel about second chances and finding your own happiness in life instead of blaming or relying on others for your choices.

Murder at Elm House, by Helena Dixon

Murder at Elm House book cover
Kitty Underhay and her beau Matthew Bryant find themselves involved in another murder mystery following a series of suspicious deaths at a nursing home. A number of break ins and thefts also take place: is there a personal connection with the murder of Kitty’s mother and the man on the run?
Murder at Elm House is the 6th book in Helena’s Dixon’s Kitty Underhay series. There are no spoilers about the cases in the previous books although there is a continuance of the disapearance and murder of Kitty’s mother which has been a thread running through each book.
Kitty remains a feisty protagonist despite the danger she faces as she presses for the arrest of her mother’s murderer. On top of this she helps her grandmother’s friend who is fearful after the mysterious deaths at the Elm House nursing home. Her relationship with Matthew does not seemed to have developed further even though they have decided to take the ‘step out’. Kitty is also learning to drive: very modern!
I love the escapism into the 1930s which is brought to life in this series. The class and gender rules and roles vividly contribute to the realism of the plot and characters. There are some surprising developments as secret activities are investigated and I was kept guessing until the end.
Murder at Elm House is an enjoyable cosy murder mystery. Other books in the series that I have reviewed: Murder at Enderley Hall, Murder at the Playhouse, Murder on the Dance Floor, and Murder in the Belltower.

Description:
Kitty Underhay feels the touch… of death.
1934. Accidental amateur sleuth Kitty Underhay is being escorted by ex-army captain Matthew Bryant on an errand of mercy, as she takes a basket of grapes to her nemesis Mrs Craven, who is recuperating from a recent operation. But their arrival at Elm House Nursing Home coincides with the mysterious death of Lady Wellings, a long-term resident.
The woman was known to be ill, so when the police turn a disinterested ear to Mrs Craven’s suspicion that Lady Wellings was poisoned, Kitty decides to look into the case herself. And when another invalid, the gentle Mrs Pearson, collapses fatally in the breakfast room, it seems her suspicions are well-founded. For an institution promising health and rejuvenation, there seems to be a very low survival rate amongst the guests!
When the nurse Eloise Hibbert hints at sinister goings on among the staff, Kitty arranges to meet her away from the home to uncover how deep the treachery lies. However, before she can make the rendezvous, Eloise meets an unfortunate end falling from the top of the building. Was she pushed by the hand of fate, or a cold-blooded killer?
Meanwhile, Matt has been following an entirely different trail of evidence, and what he finds out chills him to the bone. When Kitty fails to return from her unsuccessful meeting, it is clear she has stumbled onto a plot far more devious than they could have imagined, and into a trap laid by an unscrupulous killer…
An utterly sensational and addictive Golden Age murder mystery. Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey and Lee Strauss.

The House in the Clouds, by Victoria Connelly

The House in the Clouds book cover

Edward Townsend and Abigail Carey are totally different in personality and their outlook on life. But both fall in love with Winfield Hall and compete aganst each other at the auction house. Yet they end up sharing the property and making a strange friendship but both are keeping secrets…
The House in the Clouds is the first in a trilogy so don’t expect a conclusion! There are plenty of loose ends for development in the next two books.
Two people thrown together by circumstances and secretly vulnerable. Over the course of the book, both Edward and Abigail’s personal, professional and family lives are revealed to us. Yet these secrets remain hidden from each other, even as their friendship develops.
The two main characters contrast wonderfully with each other. Edward is a finance man, with his mind on the practical, the safe path, secure investments. Abi is an artist who owned her own company but longs to re-establish her creativity and passion. Both come from dysfunctional families which has shaped their outlook but sent them in different directions.
The style of writing is warm and compassionate whilst dealing with emotionally heavy topics as we discover the sadness that haunts both Edward and Abi. There is also humour in the sibling relationship between Abi and her sister which lightens the gentle mocking (plus it feels very realsitic as it resembles the way my sister and I act!)
The House in the Clouds is an enjoyable and gentle book about staying true to yourself and finding contentment.

The House in the Clouds
Artist Abigail Carey has always dreamed of a life in the country and, when Winfield Hall comes up at auction, she’s desperate to make the place her home. The only trouble is that businessman, Edward Townsend, has exactly the same idea.
With its position high on the Sussex Downs, Winfield is a stunning house, but it hasn’t been a home for a long time and there’s a lot of work to do to restore it to its former glory. It’s going to take a lot of time and money, so Edward and Abi decide to take a risk and share the house, each living in their own wing.
But can these two strangers agree on a vision that suits them both? And will free-spirited Abi ever get the rather reserved Edward to reveal the secret he’s been hiding for so long?
The House in the Clouds is the first novel in a brand new trilogy from the bestselling author of The Rose Girls and The Book Lovers series.
