My Mother’s Secret, by Julia Roberts

Danni’s difficult relationship with her mother Diana worsens when her mum is diagnosed with dementia and breast cancer. Diana reveals that she had a stillborn son but is convinced he didn’t really die. Is this her mental deterioration or the truth…?
My Mother’s Secret is a very emotional book that centres around family dynamics. Danni has always felt unloved, that her mother valued her younger brother whilst rejecting her. With time running out, she is desperate to finally get the love and recognition she has always wanted. Watching a loved one’s physical and mental health deteriorate is described with heartbreaking realism.
My own emotions veered from anger to sympathy and back again when considering Diana and the ways that past events have shaped her character and behaviour towards her daughter. Although the past explains her behaviour, it doesn’t excuse it in any way. In contrast, Danni is almost saint-like, putting up with her mum’s vitriol whilst coping with Diana’s tragic diagnosis.
The style of writing feels quite natural which adds an authenticity to the scenarios described. I could particularly identify with Danni as she is around my age, with children as well as parents to care for. To be honest, I wanted Danni to find answers to soothe her heart and finally make Diana treat her with the love and respect she naturally deserved as her daughter.
My Mother’s Secret is a tale of sadness, squandered love and new hope.
I have previously reviewed police thrillers Little Girl Missing, What He Did, and Why She Died by Julia Roberts
My Mother’s Secret book description:
‘They told me he died, but I never believed them. I’d have known,’ she says, her voice little more than a whisper and her eyes searching mine. ‘A mother would know if her child died, wouldn’t she?’
The phone call comes in the middle of the night, rousing Danni from her safe, warm bed. The police have found her mother Diana wandering miles from her house, confused and lost. Danni races to her mother’s side – and as usual, Diana doesn’t seem to want her there. But when Danni finds out that her mother is seriously ill, she decides to put the past behind her, and care for her mother in the time they have left.
But as some of Diana’s memories are slipping away, others are forcing their way to the surface. One night she breaks down and reveals that before Danni was born, she had another baby who never got to see the world. Faced with her mother’s heartbreak, Danni vows to do everything she can to bring Diana some peace, hoping that it will mend their fractured relationship too.
Yet as Danni investigates the past, tracking down the aunt she’s never met and searching for her lost brother’s resting place, her good intentions have unexpected consequences as more truths emerge. And there’s one shocking revelation which could change Danni’s life forever. Are some secrets best left buried?
A completely heartbreaking and compelling story of families, secrets, and the fierce love between mothers and children. Fans of Amanda Prowse, Ali Mercer and Jodi Picoult will smile through their tears.

The Things We Don’t Say, by Ella Carey
The Things We Don’t Say is a painting by groundbreaking modernist artist Patrick Adams. The only portrait he ever painted of someone he knew. The sitter was the love of his life, Emma Temple. Now aged 90, Emma cherishes Patrick’s memory so is devastated when an art dealer claims that it was in fact painted by someone else. The implications for her granddaughter are huge as her whole career is at risk…
The Things We Don’t Say is a dual timeline book set in the 1910s and 1920s as well as the 1980s. Both timelines are written effectively and evoke the culture of the times.
The mystery of the painting is maintained throughout the whole book. Emma’s granddaughter’s future is at risk as they have used the painting as collateral to fund her music studies. There is a spark between Ewan and Laura but her anger and passionate defence of the painting’s provenance is unwavering as is his claim of forgery.
This book is character driven rather than huge plot developments. The relationship between Emma and Patrick, their love that transcends the physical and endures despite his homosexuality. The narrative develops in a non linear way as the timelines are interspersed with each other. There is a gentleness to the style of writing which brings the characters to life and adds a richness to the historical detail.
Overall, The Things We Don’t Say is an enjoyable book about the enduring power of love.
I have previously reviewed other Ella Carey books including Secret Shores, Beyond The Horizon, Paris Time Capsule, The House by the Lake, and From a Paris Balcony.
Book Description:
From top-ten bestseller Ella Carey comes a gripping, haunting and utterly captivating novel about love, secrets and betrayal in a story that spans the most tumultuous decades of the twentieth century.
What happens when the truths you have built your life on start to crumble?
Emma Temple sits looking out of the window in her beautiful apartment in the heart of London, surrounded by memories of her younger years as one of England’s most influential artists. Nearly ninety, it would be easy to overlook her as a forgetful older lady. But Emma’s past, including her great love affair which survived two world wars, is about to come crashing into the present.
When her granddaughter Laura arrives asking questions about the portrait that hangs above her bed, Emma is transported back over sixty years. The picture was painted by the only man she ever truly loved, the one soul on earth who knew her deepest secret. But when a newspaper claims that the portrait is a fake, everything Emma believed to be true starts to collapse. Suddenly she is transported back to a sunny house in the south of France in 1923 and the moment when her life changed forever…
An incredibly emotional and totally compelling historical novel about the relationships that shape us and the secrets we never forget. Fans of My Name is Eva, Fiona Valpy and Rhys Bowen will be completely transported from the very first page.

The Newlyweds, by Arianne Richmonde

Vivien and Ashton have been married just 6 months. The perfect wedding and the perfect couple. But Vivien’s friends and therapist soon suspect that there are secrets in the marriage when bruises start to appear on Vivien…
The Newlyweds is an intriguing book with a mystery at its heart. From the start, I had suspicions that we were being presented a skewed version of events. Secrets and mysterious happenings were rife, including the discovery that Ashton had a sister and the unexplained unlocking of doors. This increases the anticipation and tension for the reader as they await further plot developments.
There is a huge revelation just after halfway through the book that turns our perception of the characters and events on its head. There were further twists, even including the final chapter. It was necessary to suspend my disbelief a little especially in the final quarter but it was a fun read.
Vivien and Ashton are both intense characters, victims yet dangerous. Revenge and control are key to uncovering the truth. Although we are privy to Vivien’s perspective, her choices are not always likeable, and indeed her character overall is calculating. However, it is Vivien’s first person narrative used throughout so we are led to feel more strongly towards her and gain a good understanding of her thought processes and actions.
The Newlyweds was an enjoyable book but very difficult to review without giving away major spoilers!

The Day My Husband Left, by Amy Miller

Heidi and Johnny have had a lifetime of love together. But now Johnny is dead and Heidi is bereft. She has her daughters but her heart has never forgotten the son she and Johnny were forced to give away as teenagers. Then she discovers a photo on Johnny’s phone, taken moments before he died. A visit to the location provides an opportunity to heal the past…
The cover of The Day My Husband Left is sooooo clever. As I’ve said before, I don’t read the blurbs, I approach each book fresh so the cover led my thoughts one way which were immediately incorrect. Based on the cover, I imagined a volatile relationship, a breakdown, a fractured love.
Actually, The Day My Husband Left is an exquisite account of grief and hope, the two emotions cleverly interwoven throughout. Heidi exhibits a range of responses to her grief including shock, anger and finally acceptance. The discovery of their son brings the potential for hope but also the risk of disappointment. Love is almost like a living creature. It ebbs and flows, the spark can catch fire or it can burn out.
I admit to being a little fed up with Heidi for dwelling in her own grief rather than being the mother her children needed. But then I was annoyed with myself for not being tolerant enough. I was soooo frustrated by William and his inability to take responsibiity for his own actions. It is the sign of a good book when it makes you react emotionally!
The Day My Husband Left is great for making us think ‘what if’ but I can’t give any examples or it would spoil the plot developments! The ending provides hope but does not fully conclude the characters’ journeys. Life continues and love flutters like a heartbeat.
Book Description:
I didn’t think there was life after you, but you left me a gift on the day you died that changed everything for me…
On the day Heidi’s husband, Johnny, died, he passed on a final token of his love – a precious photograph of his last moments. As Heidi pores over the image, she sees a busy street scene and a pavement full of strangers – but she has no idea what this last message from her beloved husband could mean.
Heidi has spent her days – and her years – in her workshop, giving cherished old furniture a second chance. But there are some parts of Heidi’s own life that are beyond repair. Secrets that Heidi and Johnny kept throughout their long marriage. Things that they were never brave enough to speak about.
All Heidi knows now is that this picture of her husband’s final moments is where she has to start looking for clues. When she visits the busy street from the photograph, she suddenly comes face to face with the person Johnny had been meeting that day – someone she herself has spent a lifetime longing to know. But is she ready for what they’ll tell her and how will the rest of her family react when she brings them home?
The Day My Husband Left will make you cry, laugh, hope, and learn how to put the broken bits of your own life back together again. Perfect for readers who love Jojo Moyes, Susan Lewis and Ruth Hogan.
