Miracles in Wild Rose Bay, by Susanne O’Leary

Miracles in Wild Rose Bay book cover

Tara O’Rourke takes a photography assignment in Ireland and takes the opportunity to stay with her twin sister Kate. Can she uncover the mystery of her family history as well as heal her heart after her on-off relationship finally disintegrates…?
Miracles in Wild Rose Bay is part of the Sandy Cove series by Susanne O’Leary. There are spoilers about relationships established in previous books but I don’t believe this would ruin the enjoyment of previous books if you go back to read them.
Tara appeared briefly in the previous book about her sister’s arrival in Sandy Cove but is now the main protagonist in this book. She is keen to photograph the local area for her magazine assignment but her sister is concerned that this may have a negative effect if the place becomes overrun with tourists. This leads to conflict between the twins which is further exacerbated when Tara wants to buy the old family farm.
There is a mystery in the twins’ family history as their great grandfather left the family farm and never returned. As she investigates the past, Tara has two potential love interests as she also seeks to forget about her American lover who dumps her unceremoniously. I had no idea which of the men she would end up with but felt she made the right choice.
Miracles in Wild Rose Bay is a gentle and warm romance novel set in the vividly described beauty of Ireland. The pace is calm and the plot unfolds against the backdrop of the rich setting.
I have previously reviewed Daughters of Wild Rose Bay, Memories of Wild Rose Bay, Dreams of Willow House.

Staying in her sister Kate’s sweet little cottage, the long nights and beach strolls inspire Tara. But Kate isn’t pleased with Tara’s assignment: she doesn’t want the untouched beauty of the area spoiled by tourists. And when Tara ignores Kate and heads out on her own, she encounters more opposition from Kate’s handsome friend Mick O’Dwyer.
Despite their differences, Tara soon finds herself captivated by Mick, and as he helps her research the area, they uncover a tumbledown farmhouse that holds a secret about Tara’s family. Soon Tara is forced to make a choice: should she give up her story and the career she’s always wanted, or the man and the country she’s falling in love with?

Saltwater Graves, by B. R. Spangler

Saltwater Graves book cover

Exciting changes for Detective Casey White and her lover Jericho Flynn as they move forward with their relationship. But the spectre of his first wife’s murder hangs over the couple, especially when dead women wash up on the beach.
Saltwater Graves is the third book to feature Casey. It isn’t necessary to have read the first books and there aren’t spoilers about the previous cases to ruin your reading if you choose to go back and read Where Lost Girls Go and The Innocent Girls after this one.
Casey’s personal happiness of the opening chapters is quickly tarnished by the murder investigation. The bodies are described in forensic detail but this is not too graphic.
Most of the plot is delivered through Casey’s first person narrative. This is an excellent way of making us identify with her and follow the clues of the case. It also allows us to see her emotions and fear as the investigation progresses and her lover Jericho becomes the main suspect.
Other parts of the book are written from the third person perspective and we see the killer and his victims interacting, as well as Paige Kotes who is in prison for the murder of Jericho’s wife. These alternative viewpoints give us a feeling of anticipation and tension as we prepare for more murders.
The chapters are short and the varying perspectives allow the twists of the plot to move along quickly. The ending is dramatic and leaves lots of potential for another sequel as Casey’s life is changed personally and professionally.
Saltwater Graves was a hugely enjoyable police thriller. I loved the personal nature of the case and look forward to catching up with Casey in the next instalment.

Plunging under the cold ocean surface, her long blonde hair drags in the current and she frantically kicks towards the light. With her arms and legs tied she is helpless. As water fills her lungs, she has just one regret. She never told anyone about her date.
On a lonely stretch of coast at daybreak in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Detective Casey White is shocked to find the drowned body of a much-loved local woman, Ann Choplin, her beautiful face covered with specks of sand. The green and white rope binding her wrists reveals the terrifying truth that this innocent mother’s death was no accident.
With the incoming tide flooding the scene and swallowing all evidence, Casey’s team has nowhere to turn… but it’s Casey who realizes this beach will be devastatingly familiar to her partner, ex-sheriff Jericho Flynn. His wife was found murdered here years ago, thrown into the ocean alive just like Ann. But the twisted and jealous woman guilty of that crime has been in prison for years.
Days later, another woman is found drowned on the same beach, her wrists tied. Casey fears a copycat killer is on the loose, playing a deadly game with Jericho by digging up the horrors of his past.
Certain that finding a link between these women will crack the case, Casey works through the night digging into their lives and finds an old photo of the two victims at school together, smiling in their cheerleader uniforms. But cold betrayal floods Casey as she sees Jericho in the background. She’d thought it was safe to let him into her life, but he never once mentioned he knew the victims. What other secrets is he hiding?
When a coil of green and white rope is found in his garage, Casey’s whole team is convinced that the mounting evidence is stacked against Jericho. But with Casey’s instincts screaming that Jericho could never hurt anyone, it will mean risking her own career—and her life—to clear his name. If she’s wrong, she is placing her trust in a killer… but if she’s right, more innocent women are in terrible danger.
An absolutely unputdownable crime thriller, with twists and turns that will leave you breathless. Fans of Robert Dugoni, Kendra Elliot and Rachel Caine will be addicted.

The Killer’s Girl, by Helen Phifer

The Killer's Girl book cover

Morgan Brookes is only just recovering from her last murder case when a new killer appears. DNA suggests a culprit but he has been in prison for rape and murder for the past 20 years so who could it possibly be? Meanwhile Morgan is trying to rebuild her relationship with her alcoholic father as they both continue to mourn her mother: can she stay focussed on the murder case…?
The Killer’s Girl is the second novel to feature Morgan Brookes. It is not necessary to have read the first book and there are not obvious spoilers so you could go back and read One Left Alive without knowing details of the case and killer.
The police team continues to be hugely likeable. Amy provides some light relief with her positive attitude while Ben and Morgan display their detrmination to solve the case whilst attempting to hide their vulnerability. There continues to be a romantic frisson between the lead characters which build an anticipation in us as readers as we want them both to have a happy ending.
I found myself totally immersed in the plot and engaged with the characters, especially Morgan as her personal involvement in the case becomes more prominent over the course of the book. The chapters are short which drives the story on and makes it difficult to put down when just one more chapter is so tempting!
The murder case is presented in forensic detail and the novel uses police procedures to present graphic and brutal crimes objectively. There were a few ‘aha!’ moments when I suspected something which then developed as I expected or the plot twisted into something I wasn’t prepared for.
The Killer’s Girl was a real page turner. The momentum never let up and I can’t wait for the next book!

Description:
‘Mama, wake up.’
The little girl reached for her mother’s face with one pudgy hand. But the eyes stayed closed, and the blood continued to trickle across the floor.
When the body of a young woman is found, tied to her bed and the victim of a brutal attack in her own home, Detective Morgan Brookes is sickened by what she finds as she searches the house. And unprepared for the nightmares it inspires about her childhood.
When the DNA collected gives a positive ID, Morgan can’t wait to put the attacker behind bars. But the person it matches to is already in prison. How could the DNA of someone who has been locked up for over twenty years have shown up in Morgan’s crime scene? And then they make another close match. To Morgan herself.
Faced with the impossible proof that she is somehow connected to this case, Morgan delves deep into the crimes of a killer who stalked the Lake District two decades ago. But distracted by the old case, she misses the signs that he has found a new victim. And when he strikes close to home, Morgan finally realises that she has been living on borrowed time. To find this killer, it’s clear she must confront the nightmares in her past…
A heart-racing, nerve-wracking crime thriller. Fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Patricia Gibney will be completely gripped.

Don’t Scream, by Margaret Murphy

A drug deal done wrong, a murdered teenager and her missing newborn. A highly emotional case ensues for DCI Jeff Rickman, DC Naomi Hart and their colleagues…
Two separate investigations collide as do police officer personalities. Drug addict Mark Davis steals money from his boss Rob Maitland. He goes on the run after returning home to find his ex girlfriend brutally mutilated and murdered. He takes their newborn baby away with him but struggles to cope with his addiction, the baby and being chased for the money: there are tragic consequences.
The drugs team is being controlled by smarmy DI Cass and there is lots of friction between him and DS Foster who is moved across from the murder case due to a personal connection with two suspects. Rickman and Hart are both hugely likeable to contrast with Cass’ character. There are flashes of humour among the police team, and I particularly enjoyed the realistic and fun exchanges over the kettle.
The murder of Jasmine is cruel and sadistic. Her innocence makes us feel heartbroken and encourages us to will the police to find her murderer. We see some chapters from the killer’s perspective but this gave me no clues to their identity.
I felt that the writing of this book was high quality although there were a couple of parts I had to re-read to make sense of (but I am unsure if this was deliberate due to the drugs or panic of the characters involved).
Don’t Scream is the third book in the Rickman series. It is not necessary to have read the previous books but I hope to go back and read the others to track the police character progression.
I have previously reviewed Before He Kills Again by Margaret Murphy.

A YOUNG MOTHER KILLED BY A THOUSAND CUTS
Detective Rickman couldn’t take his eyes off the body. There was so much blood. A lacing of fine cuts: parallel lines, curls, sunbursts, whorls and geometric patterns.
‘The baby?’ he asks. ‘Is the baby all right?’
Rickman must dive into a world of exploitation and betrayal in a case that becomes personal for the whole team.
CAN THEY STOP A TWISTED SERIAL KILLER, WHO TURNS HIS VICTIMS LAST BREATH INTO A NIGHTMARE?

Don’t miss this captivating crime thriller with a pulse-pounding conclusion.
Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, J.M. Dalgliesh, Karin Slaughter, Matt Brolly, Ian Rankin, Mark Edwards and Charlie Gallagher.
MEET THE DETECTIVES
At six-foot-four Detective Chief Inspector Jeff Rickman is an imposing figure. He has the appearance of being a bruiser in a suit, thanks to his crooked nose (broken in childhood and badly reset) and assorted scars, one of which bisects his right eyebrow. He wears his chestnut-brown hair short, and anyone seeing him for the first time might mistake him for a tough nut. He’s handy enough with his fists to face down hard men, but women still feel safe in his presence.
Detective Constable Naomi Hart is known for her cool Scandinavian looks. She wears her ‘almost white-blonde’ hair in a twist, accentuating the length and curve of her neck. Rickman is devoted to his partner and would never stray, but he does notice the men on his team noticing her. She is aloof from it all; there’s an air of a mystery about her and she likes it that way. Very much her own woman, Hart is ambitious, and can play the political game, willing to weigh up the costs against gains of working with people she really doesn’t like. In the interview room, she shows poise and control. She has a ready wit and a good sense of timing.

PRAISE FOR MARGARET MURPHY
“One of those tough, gritty crime novels that burrows under your skin and won’t leave you alone until you flip the last page — crisp writing, vivid characters, a bullet train plot, and a nerve-jangling aura of menace.” Richard Montanari
“This is a book of which it could justifiably be said, ‘As good as Ian Rankin, or your money back’.” Phil Rickman, Phil the Shelf, Radio Wales
“A chilling tale of murder, mystery and intrigue set in the murky underworld of Liverpool.” Big Issue
“Murphy has steadily established herself as one of England’s best crime novelists and this latest book is another tough, convincing tale with strong characters and believable police work. Recommended.” Jeff Popple, Canberra Times

Secret Shores, by Ella Carey

Secret Shores book cover

1940s Australia, Edward struggles against the constraints of his social class as he pursues his passion to be a writer. He meets Rebecca, an artist, but will they ever overcome their social status differences?  1980s New York, Tess has her prize author taken from her and is handed a manuscript from Edward. Can she make it a bestseller and revive her career?
Secret Shores is a very gentle love story. Edward and Rebecca are both artistic but have to fight class discrimination in 1940s Australia. The aftermath of the Second World War has made Edward re-evaluate his social standing and want to fulfil his passion for writing. He is supported by Rebecca, a struggling artist and they fall in love.
Meanwhile we see Edward again the 1980s as he picks up his pen for the first time in years and decides to share the story of his love for Rebecca. Tess is an editor who wants to make the book a success and investigates how much of Edward’s ‘novel’ is in fact autobiography.
We know from the prologue that there won’t be a happy ending for Edward and Rebecca due to an accident. Their gentle love story is written wonderfully against the backdrop of social change and the culture of Australia. Yet it didn’t have the passion that would have driven the book and made me engage with their characters better.
I found myself drawn to Tess as she is determined and passionate so I wanted her to succeed and make Edward’s book a bestseller to spite her boss. I felt that she was brave at times, and her character could have been from the modern day rather than the 1980s.
Author Ella Carey has done fantastic research into the modernist movement and there are real life characters included in the novel to blur the distinction between fact and fiction.
I have previously reviewed Paris Time Capsule, The House By The Lake, From a Paris Balcony, and Beyond the Horizon.

Secret Shores book description:
From bestselling author Ella Carey comes an utterly gripping and sweeping historical novel about terrible choices and heartbreaking family mysteries. The past holds more secrets than we can ever imagine…
1946. Young, beautiful artist Rebecca survived the devastating war that claimed the lives of so many of the men and women she grew up with. Her friends have returned as empty shells or not at all. But although peace has been declared, Rebecca is still fighting at home. Her controlling mother will stop at nothing to prevent Rebecca from following her dream to become a painter.
When Rebecca meets dashing young Edward, a pilot during the war, she discovers both love and an escape. Edward makes her feel truly loved, alive and excited about her future and art. But when Edward takes Rebecca to visit his childhood home on the sweeping coast, their trip ends in tragedy. Edward’s father commits suicide and, consumed by grief, Edward is faced with a terrible choice: love or family?
Utterly distraught, Rebecca goes out to the shore by moonlight to paint. Under the stars, she stares into the waves, thinking about her life. The next morning she has disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only a pencil on the sand. Finding the truth will change everything for those who were left behind…
Fans of My Name is Eva, Rhys Bowen and Lucinda Riley will fall head over heels in love with Secret Shores.
