The Crying House, by B.R. Spangler

The Crying House book cover

Detective Casey White is regaining her fitness after being injured when she spots an abandoned jacket on her run. She investigates the area and finds the body of a teenager. Whilst looking for clues she discovers a mummified body: is there a connection between the victims?
The Crying House is the fourth book to feature Casey, her lover Jericho and the rest of their law enforcement team. I have previously reviewed two of the earlier books in the series The Innocent Girls and Saltwater Graves. There are references to events in previous books but no major spoilers.
There are two main threads to this book. Firstly is the first murder to be discovered. A teenage girl who was having significant issues at school as revealed by her diary. Could a fight over a boy have got out of hand? The second set of murder victims have been mummified with salt and there could be a connection to an old case. The team have the tricky task of identifying the victims as well as solving their murders.
The majority of the book is written from Casey’s first person perspective but there are a few chapters from other characters’ third person viewpoints. Some of the forensic details are a little grisly but the characters’ emotional response directs the feelings of the reader. I also felt surprisingly emotional about Dr Swales’ circumstances as she feels weary at all she has seen and her health suffers in this book.
Casey and Jericho’s relationship takes a back seat in this book complared the previous plots, although they do decide to move in together. The thread of Casey’s missing daughter trails through all of the books but only had brief mentions in this one. However, there is a major cliffhanger at the end and I can’t wait for the next book!
The Crying House is an engaging police and crime thriller

About the Book:
Strands of blonde hair escape from beneath the sheet and catch the dawn light creeping through the window. Silence falls as the fabric is drawn back to reveal the body of a young girl, her hands folded on her chest, her long lashes resting on her cold, pale cheeks.
When Detective Casey White finds the body of a teenager perfectly preserved in salt in an abandoned beach vacation home, her heart shatters. Tina Somners has been missing since she set off to meet her friends for spring break. With her own daughter missing too, Casey knows how devastated the girl’s parents will be at this tragic end to their search.
Pushing her pain aside, Casey delves into old files and gets her first lead: years ago, a man murdered his wife and left her the same way. But he’s been locked up in prison all this time…
Interviewing him, Casey is certain the now frail and elderly prisoner couldn’t have hurt Tina himself. But is he somehow pulling strings from behind bars?
Then another perfectly preserved body is found, a threatening note addressed to Casey herself clutched in the girl’s hand. Running out of time and leads, Casey is hit with a realization that turns her blood to ice: her own daughter could be next…
An absolutely unputdownable read that will have you reading late into the night and gasping at the shocking twists. Perfect for fans of Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.

Mystery at the Church, by Clare Chase

Mystery at the Church book cover

Obituary writer and amateur sleuth Eve Mallow joins the locals in being an extra for a TV series that films in their village. But the filming ends in chaos when the director is found dead in the ancient church. The other cast and crew are the main suspects…
Mystery at the Church is the 6th book by Clare Chase to feature Eve Mallow. However, there are no spoilers so would work as a stand alone novel. I have previously reviewed Mystery on Hidden LaneMystery at Apple Tree CottageMystery at Seagrave Hall, Mystery at the Old Mill, Mystery at the Abbey Hotel.
The village of Saxford St Peter is overrun with a TV crew and Eve in on hand as an extra but also providing cakes as part of her part time job in between obituary writing. When celebrated director Rufus Beaumont is found dead, Eve seizes the opportunity to write his obituary as well as hunt for his killer. Once again she calls upon former police detective Robin to undermine the ineffective officer in charge of the case.
The personal and professional relationships of the victim with other characters are examined by Eve as she gathers information for her obituary. This enables her to search for clues about the motive for the murder and therefore the person responsible.
There is little forensic information or violence despite the murder plot. As I have said previously about the other books in the series, the plot has a classical Sunday night TV drama feel to it due the traditional English village setting and array of background characters.
Mystery at the Church is an enjoyable cosy murder mystery to add to the series.

About the Book:
When a TV drama crew descends on sleepy Saxford St Peter, Eve Mallow joins the excited throng of extras in a funeral scene. But then a real body is found… and Eve gets a starring role as sleuth!
Eve Mallow is looking forward to her fifteen minutes of fame when Saxford St Peter is chosen as the location for a new drama series. A devoted people-watcher, Eve is thrilled to learn that TV stars are just as glamorous – and tempestuous – as she’s always imagined.
But then someone delivers a bouquet of poisonous flowers to the director Rufus Beaumont, making Eve worry that some of the rivalries she’s noticed are deadly serious. And when Rufus’s body is found in the church where the funeral scene took place, it’s clear that someone’s out for the kill in real life.
Eve and dachshund Gus have been on the ground from the start. Now they’re on the case, interrogating the suspects one by one. Is it the devastating diva whose relationship with Rufus was far from professional? The cameraman who caught Rufus doing something he shouldn’t? Or the groupie groundskeeper who’s in the background of every shot? One thing’s for sure – Eve must catch the killer before she stars in their next murderous production…
A completely unputdownable page-turner, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Agatha Christie and Betty Rowlands.

Death at the Gates, by Katie Gayle

Death at the Gates book cover

Hapless amateur sleuth Pip Bloom is called upon to go undercover at a private school to investigate exam cheats. But the situation deteriorates when a death occurs at the school fair which is discovered to be murder. Pip finds herself in danger as well…
Death at the Gates is the third book to feature the escapades of Pip (I have previously reviewed The Kensington Kidnap and The Museum Murder)
Pip’s character continues to be delightfully madcap. She bumbles through life despite her best attempts at sensible behaviour. In this book she helps her flatmate Tim’s sister who has been accused of cheating in an exam. She takes on the role of PE teacher despite having no experience and knowing nothing about sport!
This book falls firmly into the category of cosy murder mystery. The tone of the whole book is light hearted and warm in spite of the danger faced by Pip as she investigates. The murder does not occur until halfway through the book and is not described in graphic detail. I guessed the murderer quite early on but this did not spoil my enjoyment at all.
Threads from the previous books continue to feature heavily. The throwaway hints about  tumultuous disasters from Pip’s past. The potential romantic interest of Pip with Jimmy and Tim. The llama business of Pip’s mother. The hilarious misquotes of Flis (seriously how does she manage to write a blog?!)
Death at the Gates is a light hearted cosy mystery. It is easy to enjoy the book without reading the previous books in the series but I would recommend reading them all!

Death at the Gates book description:
Hurlingham House school is a high-achiever’s heaven, full of happy, hard-working pupils. There’s just the small matter of the dead body on the field… Sounds like a case for Epiphany Bloom!
When Epiphany Bloom’s best friend’s sister Claire is accused of trading exam papers for money, Epiphany agrees to see Ms Peters, the headteacher of Claire’s fiercely competitive school, to provide moral support. Claire has always been a model student and is loudly protesting her innocence: surely it’s all just a misunderstanding.
But when Ms Peters hears about Epiphany’s previous sleuthing exploits, she enlists her help to track down the true culprit!
Taking a job as a PE teacher, Epiphany soon realises she has plenty of suspects for the exam scam mastermind. The broke young teacher with a shady past? The father willing to buy his daughter anything – including grades? The school governor desperate to keep Hurlingham House at the top of the ranks?
Then Epiphany finds one of them dead at the school fair, and it becomes clear someone is taking the cut-throat culture of the school too literally – and when mysterious accidents start happening around her too, it seems the killer knows she’s onto them.
Can Epiphany solve the murder as well as clearing Claire’s name, before she becomes the next victim? This is one test she can’t afford to fail…
A charming and totally addictive cozy mystery with a hilarious and warm-hearted heroine. A must-read for fans of M.C. Beaton, Lee Strauss and Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series.

The Secret Diary, by Anna Stuart

The Secret Diary book cover

1945, the war has ended and Nancy and her husband Joe leave their military roles to live with his family. Nancy expected to be working but her new family want her to stay home to complete domestic tasks and bear children. Her heart loongs for the value and purpose she felt during the war. Present day, Lorna is struggling to cope as a widow with two small children. She goes to stay with her mother and discovers a secret diary hidden in her room. It belonged to Nancy, her step-grandmother…
The Secret Diary is a wonderful dual timeline historical novel set in the 1940s and modern day, showing the lives of two women as they struggle to adjust to changes in their personal lives.
Nancy and Lorna are both endearing and likeable lead characters. They are also both incredibly relatable and authentic so I felt able to identify and empathise with both as their situations develop. Sometimes when I read this type of narrative, I feel drawn to one timeline over another but in this book I was completely immersed in both eras.
The book is written in the third person perspective although we do have Nancy’s diary entries which are written in the first person. The use of the diary shows us what Lorna is reading and allows us extra insights into Nancy’s emotions.
I felt frustrated and even angry at Nancy’s husband Joe for falling in love with her and then expecting her to change and conform to social norms of the time. In contrast, Lorna has the support of her family and friends as she struggles to cope with her grief. The characterisation in both eras is so believable that I felt an emotional connection with both of the women’s experiences.
The Secret Diary was a hugely enjoyable book about the lives and loves of two women, separated by time but both overcoming obstacles to their happiness. I have previously reviewed The Berlin Zookeeper by Anna Stuart.

Anna Stuart lives in Derbyshire with her campervan-mad husband, two hungry teenagers and a slightly loopy dog. She was hooked on books from the moment she first opened one in her cot so is thrilled to now have several of her own to her name. Having studied English literature at Cambridge university, she took an enjoyable temporary trip into the ‘real world’ as a factory planner, before returning to her first love and becoming an author. History has also always fascinated her. Living in an old house with a stone fireplace, she often wonders who sat around it before her and is intrigued by how actively the past is woven into the present, something she likes to explore in her novels. Vegan cheese sauce

My mum is the queen of cheese sauces and her cauliflower cheese is one of my favourite thing in the world. Making it wheat free was easy enough but using vegan cheese is very different. My issue is with the texture of the topping not the consistency of the sauce 🙂 Not perfect but definitely great as a side dish

Macaroni cheese using vegan cheese sauce

Vegan cheese sauce ingredients
2oz plant based spread
2oz plain flour
500ml plant milk
2oz vegan coconut based cheese, grated
salt and pepper to taste (and I add a pinch of cayenne)

vegan cheese sauce ingredients

Instructions
Melt the spread in a saucepan. When fully melted, add the flour and stir to combine.

Remove from the heat and gradually add the milk, about 50ml at a time to begin with. Try to break up any lumps in your vegan cheese sauce!

When all the milk has been added, return the pan to the heat and stir continuously until it boils.

Simmer for 1 minute continuing to stir.
Remove from heat and stir in the grated cheese until combined. Add seasoning to taste.

This recipe for vegan cheese sauce makes enough for one large dish of cauliflower or macaroni cheese to serve 4 people. However, I would advise using it for side dishes.
vegan cheese sauce poured over pasta
Top with another 2 oz of cheese and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. I used my sauce for two side dishes, one using macaroni and the other cauliflower and broccoli.

I have yet to find a vegan cheese that melts convincingly on top of a dish without going slightly claggy which is why I would recommend this recipe for vegan cheese sauce as a side dish rather than a main dish.
