The Girl With The Scarlet Ribbon, by Suzanne Goldring

The Girl With The Scarlet Ribbon book cover

1943 Florence: Gabriella and her little brother Riccardo are anxiously living from day to day under Fascist rule. The sights and experience of war will live with them for a lifetime. 2019 London: Sofia is organising an exhibition of her father’s art but heads to Italy to try to understand his imagery.
The Girl With The Scarlet Ribbon is a dual timeline historical novel set mainly in Florence during WW2 and the present day.
Sofia in 2019 wants to uncover the inspiration for her father’s paintings. Through the dual timeline we discover the wartime experiences that shaped his childhood and the grief and loss that have featured in his art ever since.
The devastation of war and the mistakes of youth are brought to life as we follow the hardships faced by Gabriella and Riccardo. I feel that the author has extensively researched the geographical area, culture and history. The girl with the scarlet ribbon is a secondary character yet has a profound effect on the siblings but we don’t discover the extent until the end of the book.
The writing style is vivid and descriptive. The many mentions of Italian food will make your tummy rumble even with the lack of resources available during wartime. Emotion is high and wonderfully described, often heartbreaking as the children struggle to process what is happening to their community.
All of the characters are represented authentically although I felt quite annoyed with Riccardo’s widow as she relentlessly complains about their marriage but never confronted him. The characters are complex and very human, bringing their experiences to life within the pages.
The Girl With The Scarlet Ribbon is an absorbing and heartbreaking historical novel.
I have previously reviewed other historical novels by Suzanne Goldring: The Shut Away Sisters, The Girl Without A NameBurning Island and My Name Is Eva.

Ghosts, by Stewart Giles

Ghosts book cover

A series of execution style killings of police officers in York. DS Jason Smith is anxious to find the killer quickly but the only witnesses describe the culprit as a ghostly figure. And Smith has seen it too…
Ghosts is the 17th book to feature DS Smith and his colleagues. There are mentions of events for previous book but no spoilers.
OMG!!! The book is fast paced, dramatic and absolutely gripping. It is a quick read but doesn’t feel rushed. I was swept up in the action and devoured the pages in a couple of hours.
Smith is coping with events from his past as well as a migraine. But nothing matters more to him than finding the cop killer to save his friends and colleagues. The sinister ghostly figure is a recurring motif through the book as it attacks police officers in their homes and on the streets.
The tension and anticipation is high over the course of the book. These crimes have a shock factor for us as well as the characters in the book. The murders are not gory as they are execution style so they are horrifying in their simplicity and speed.
The humour of Smith’s relationship with superior officer Smyth lightens the tone of the book as well as adding an extra dimension to the characters. Plus there is Smith and Whitton’s relationship providing a loving but banter filled personal life (loved the car related chats they have in this book) which feels natural and realistic.
Ghosts is another excellent addition to the Jason Smith series.

Ghosts : A Detective Jason Smith thriller
Police officers are being killed in York. The murders are cold, calculated and methodical. This killer leaves nothing behind besides a sense of dread.
When someone Detective Jason Smith has worked with ends up dead it becomes personal, but this phantom leaves nothing to even hint at why this is happening.
The only breakthrough in the case comes from several witnesses who claim to have seen a ghost-like figure around the time of the murders.
Facing ghosts of his own, and on the brink of breakdown Smith is pushed even further over the edge when he discovers the sick reality behind these murders.
This isn’t about murder – this is about something else altogether.
These ghosts will haunt Jason Smith for the rest of his life.

Stewart Giles – Author Bio
After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brought together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.
The Miranda trilogy is something totally different. A psychological thriller trilogy. It is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.
The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow with book 17 now available. In addition I have an new series featuring an Irish detective who relocated to Guernsey. The first 5 books in the Detective Liam O’Reilly series are now available. There are also 2 stand alone novels with another on the way.

The Invite, by Sheryl Browne

The Invite book cover

Kaitlin’s fiance Greg arranges a lavish party for her birthday. But tensions are high when Kaitlin’s best friend Zoe arrives from Portugal. Zoe doesn’t trust Greg at all but is this due to her own disasterous love life or her fear that Kaitlin is rushing into a relationship to escape her abusive ex? Then Zoe goes missing…
The Invite is a psychological thriller based around friendship, love and trust as well as having a crime element with the mystery of Zoe’s disappearance.
Kaitlin has finally found happiness for herself and her daughter. Greg seems like the perfect man. But Zoe thought she’d found the perfect man too until she discovered he had a wife and kids. Now she is back in the UK and wants to prevent her best friend making another mistake.
I could understand both Kaitlin and Zoe’s perspectives as they both care about and feel protective towards each other. Both women are governed by their pasts and it affects their decisions and choices. Being a psychological thriller, it was clear that things would not be what they seemed and I distrusted everyone!
The book is written from various third person perspectives and there are some chapters set in the past to show the build up of events. There is a great deal of tension as Kaitlin doesn’t know who to trust and is deeply concerned about her missing best friend.
The police procedural elements added an extra layer to the plot as the police try to find Zoe alive or dead. I enjoyed reading as the twists started unravelling in unexpected directions, and the ending was a surprise.
The Invite is an entertaining psychological thriller.
I have previously reviewed other Sheryl Browne books including: My Husband’s Girlfriend, The AffairThe Second WifeThe Perfect Sister, and The New Girlfriend.

Book Description:
Kaitlin has been looking forward to her engagement party for weeks. She’s finally introducing her fiancé Greg to her best friend Zoe, but as the champagne corks pop, her dream party soon becomes her worst nightmare…
Staring at the stunning diamond solitaire on her finger, Kaitlin knows her relationship has been a whirlwind… but Greg looks after her, and he loves playing dad to her young daughter. How could she refuse when he’s already planned their romantic elopement?
As the guests arrive, Kaitlin wonders why Greg is suddenly acting so shifty. Is that a flicker of recognition on Zoe’s face? And why does she look terrified every time her phone rings?
Kaitlin watches as Zoe knocks back her white wine and makes a beeline for Greg. Then, after a heated conversation, her best friend stumbles outside without looking back.
Days later, the police knock at Kaitlin’s door – Zoe is missing.
When the police question Greg about the night of the party, Kaitlin knows he’s telling lies. But why would he? Can she really trust the man she’s marrying? And could her precious daughter’s life now be in danger too?
The Invite is an absolutely unmissable psychological thriller, perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl and The Wife. You’ll be hooked from the first page!

If She Wakes, by Erik Therme

If She Wakes book cover
Tess is doubly griefstricken following the deaths of her daughter and brother. More bad luck follows when a car accident results in her sister in law Torrie in a coma. Tess and her husband care for their nephew Levi but then a woman turns up claiming to be Torrie’s sister. However, Torrie always claimed to have no family…
If She Wakes is a psychological thriller set in America. It is a sequel to If She Dies which I have not read. The author catches us up on events from the last book so if you don’t like spoilers then I would suggest reading in order.
Tess has a lot of emotional baggage and is also keeping secrets from her husband. She is haunted by her poor choices after her daughter’s death. But now she has an immediate dilemma in the form of the woman claiming to be family. She struggles to trust anyone and is determined to keep her young nephew safe at any cost.
Tess is under a great deal of emotional pressure as her own past and that of her sister in law come to the fore. The author creates a sense of unease and tension as deception and secrets are revealed. There are plenty of twists as the plot progresses and the final chapters were completely unexpected with potential for a future sequel.
If She Wakes is an enjoyable psychological thriller that kept me guessing.
I have previously reviewed Keep Her Close by Erik Therme.

Book Blurb
Who do you trust when everyone is lying?
My name is Tess Parker.
Two days ago, I was in a car accident with my sister-in-law, Torrie. Before she slipped into a coma, she asked my husband and me to care for her four-month-old son, Levi.
Yesterday, a woman claiming to be Torrie’s estranged sister knocked on our door. But Torrie has no siblings . . . or so she said. She and my brother were only together a short time before he left, and Torrie has clearly been keeping secrets.
Today, another of Torrie’s “sisters” has come to town. Both say the other is lying about who they are.
Neither of them is telling the truth.
Both of them want Levi.

The Hidden Child, by Rebecca Griffiths

The Hidden Child book cover
September 1965. Seven year old Kathy goes missing. Her devastated mother Connie is comforted by her best friend Myra Hindley…
The Hidden Child is a fictional novel based on the infamous Moors Murders in the 1960s.
Connie is not a great mum to poor Kathy. However, her love for her daughter is brought into sharp focus when she goes missing. She is both comforted and ridiculed by childhood best friend Myra and her creepy boyfriend Ian. Knowing about the Moors Murders gives us the benefit of hindsight and ramps up the tension.
A second plotline of farmers Ronald and Tommy was also completely enthralling. Ronnie has secrets in his past and has lived in fear of discovery. Now Ronnie faces a more immediate danger as he is threatened by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley in a sinister way as well as overtly.
The connections between the two plots become apparent a third of the way through the book. I was gripped by this plot, waiting anxiously for the truth about Myra and Ian to come out whilst fearing for the safety of the other characters.
The writing doesn’t pull any punches and seamlessly moves between fact and fiction. I felt that the 1960s were brought to life and the author has done great research into the era, the location and the killers.
The Hidden Child is a brilliant read for fans of true and fictional crime novels. Loved it!
I have previously reviewed The Girl At My Door by Rebecca Griffiths, based on the real life killer John Christie.

About the Book:
Connie splashed through puddles, the rain slapping her face. Everywhere was tarmac and concrete, fog and drizzle, but no sign of her child. ‘Have you seen my daughter? Please, you must’ve seen her?’ Connie’s face crumpled, preparing to cry. But there wasn’t time for tears, she told herself, she had to find her child.
Manchester, England, 1965: In an instant Connie’s life has changed. She only left her daughter Kathy alone for a moment but that was enough for her to vanish without a trace. As Connie desperately searches for her, she has to put the news reports of other missing children to the back of her mind. She is determined to find her safe. She will bring her daughter home.
As local farmer Ronald listens to the news, he is shocked by what he hears. He has spent his life away from the spotlight, quietly tending to his farm. But when a young couple begin acting suspiciously on his land, he knows that trouble is about to reach his door.
And then he sees her. A girl in a bright red coat who looks completely lost. Ronald knows he needs to help keep her safe and find her family. But on the wild and desolate farmland, Ronald has buried his own dark secret. Can he risk it coming to light to save her life?
Inspired by a real-life true crime story, this is an unforgettable and totally gripping mystery thriller perfect for fans of Gregg Olsen, Elly Griffiths and Found.
